Headaches after a, even mid-level, workout can be the symptoms of high blood pressure. A spike in your blood pressure during a physical activity can and does often happen. This, in turn, can lead to headaches afterward. Get tested as in a stress test if you are not going too hard with the contact while sparring. A stress test involves a treadmill work out to get the heart pumping fast usually in excess of 158 bpm. In my case after 20 minutes the highest they could get mine was 148, and I was at a dead run the last 3 minutes of the test. Just a thought to maybe help you out. At the time I ran long distances, 15 o 20 miles a day, 4 times a week.

Yesterday I had my first Wrestling class ever. There was no head trauma whatsoever. But it was quite intense type of training I was not used to. (I was as gassed as gassed gets) I got a headache half way through.... and my ears started poping (like when coming down a mountain). I'd say it's high blood pressure. And I'm guessing it'll go away when I get used to this type of training.

Sometimes with some guys who sparred "heavy" years ago, or when I got older&slower I'd get headaches from time to time. Those days are long gone, but back then I was a welterweight or junior welterweight with guys my size up to middle&light heavyweight. I can't say for sure that "the bigger they are-the harder they fall"...but as I remember the bigger they are-the harder they hit. Haha. Boxing was my only striking sport.

Would like to add a bit of my experience on the same topic, few friends of mine (complete beginners) complained that they have vertigo during training and even after a round against the punching bag, sometimes headache after the training. Asked them to show me how they punch, and because their lack of any experience and an oversight of their coach - they were stiff/flexing their muscles during the whole motion while punching, leading to self-inflicted leashing towards their neck/head and also lack of oxygen (due to holding their breath for a long periods of time).

Hey Ramsey, love the channel. I recently started to train in boxing, and it’s been great, a lot of fun. However, this obviously doesn’t help with grappling, something else I’ve wanted to learn. My university is pretty small, without a wrestling program, so no one to ask here, but what are your tips for learning some wrestling basics in the US? Or should I focus on a different grappling system like Judo or jiujitsu, which I’ve noticed are far easier to find? They seem great, but wrestling has always interested me, but as a basketball player I’ve never had a lot of time. I’m finished playing in college now, and martial arts is something I’d really like to learn. Thanks for your videos, any help you can offer would be wonderful. Patrick

Hello coach! Should I invest in some lace boxing gloves, and use them only for competition? I have a pair of velcro ones that I use in training, and also in competition, so what do you say? Is it better to have 2 pairs of gloves, one for competition and one for training? Also, is it better if the ones for competition are with laces? Btw, I am fighting in national amateur championships(those types of tournaments in which you have 2-3 fights a day, and the winner of the tournament is the champion, we call them "pyramids"). I saw that some of the fighters use laced ones, some use velcro ones.

But I have a history of concussions that drastically limit what I can take to the head. I've been told by numerous people that I'd be good in wrestling or boxing but because of my fear of receiving permanent brain damage from almost any accident, I'm not sure how to approach taking on a discipline. What would you suggest? ( I am currently involved in Wing Chun). Also I did a bit of sparring in boxing, took one to the face then within the hour started to get those concussion symptoms again

I have a totally unrelated question that I hope you can answer in a future video. I have noticed that I have absurdly sharp shin bones and was wondering if there are any submissions that involve pressing shin bones into opponent? I have never done submission grappling but in freestyle wrestling our 83 year teaches to always exploit the sharp blades of forearms to cross faces and such more effective. So I was wondering if there is anything similar done with shin bones in BJJ/catch ? I know there are leg locks which challenge the integrity of opponents knee to make them submit but what about the simple sharp shin bones used to create cutting type pain?

@@RamseyDewey cool thanks. Also sorry for typos/missing words. I meant to say "83 year old wrestling coach". He coaches freestyle but I get the feeling a lot of his techniques are catch inspired because of his age and because we are in England. The younger coach and any of the competent freestyle wrestlers in the club hate his techniques/approach and mock them as being "Victorian". And they do indeed seem a bit clunky and unsophisticated to modern flowing fast olympic or folkstyle wrestling as has evolved in USSR and USA. But his insistence of digging forearms and shoulders into opponents and getting perfect positions to make them feel constricted and unable to move really does have a very strong catch feel.

Been training Muay Thai for a few years now.. The best thing to do is find a sparring partner who you trust and have an understanding with.. other than that, what really helped me is head movement, even when blocking shots, moving your head back right before impact will give a little extra room for gloves to absorb impact. I am 5'10" 150lbs with a 73in reach, so I normally spar with smaller, bulkier guys or legit female amateurs, and they always have more power than I do. When my head movement and footwork is on point.. they don't land on me very often and I can pick them apart.
@smac9194 жыл бұрын
Another thing that helped me a ton.. is to find a pro fighter with similar attributes to yourself, not to completely copy their style, but to see what they do and take some of their techniques. For me, I really looked into guys like Dom Cruz, Cory Sandhagen and Sean O'Malley.

Finding the correct sparring partners is key. Me and my partners in Muay Thai don't throw strikes intended for each others chins and always hold back on head strikes.. But it takes someone with very good accuracy and power control.. finding the correct partner is difficult, but when you do, it makes things a ton better. I remember sparring with an older guy (im 30) who had about 30lbs on me.. the dude was throwing basically full force at my head and wouldn't stop after me saying numerous times to chill out.. I leg kicked him as hard as I could right in the thigh.. he stopped throwing towards my face after that.. we really haven't talked since. Be careful who you spar with, make sure you guys have an understanding before hand.

I suffer migraines every week or so, and have been rushed to the ER in ambulances for them. Most of my damage occurred in TRAINING, because we trained WRONG. Today I, my friends and family members have lasting problems--a cousin of mine who was on the US Army Boxing team, can barely talk talk now. Head aches are NOT GOOD, and if they happen often - STOP. See a doctor, and train somewhere else. Unless you want to be a vegetable, drooling, and barely able to say more than 3 words...which I have seen. NOTHING is worth losing your MIND and health to. 10000% percent can happen. If you need to shell up, make sure you have your arms ready to brace for impact. Covering your chin is the area in which you are most at risk of that happening. A really good thing to practice is head movement, you can lean your head back right before impact, leaving a little extra room for your hands / arms to absorb the blow. Even on blocked shots, it's good practice to brace your head / neck.
@kellymoderator52534 жыл бұрын

@@kellymoderator5253 it's really just a timing thing, practice makes perfect. A good way to practice would be just have a partner throw light strikes at you while you block and practice moving your head back before impact, even footwork can help absorb strikes, eventually you will get your head and footwork in sync. That's what leads to guys like Nate & Jon Jones having such a good 'chin'. They see the strikes coming and prepare accordingly. The only time Nate got KOd was off an amazing combo by Josh Thomson, Nate thought a low kick was coming and Josh went high.

@@kellymoderator5253 The best ever at absorbing strikes was probably Anderson Silva.. He used to completely drop his hands and let fighters tee off on him.. 99% of the time, no damage would occur, because Anderson rolls with and absorbs the strike so well, the only time he got dropped doing it, is when Chris Weidman threw an off rhythm strike. I’ve gotten tension headaches in the temples after sparring my coaches and fysio think its from tight neck and trapezius muscles this happens if I’ve not warmed up the neck and not sparred in a while do you know anything about this type of temple headaches connected to tight neck/shoulders? The common overall head headaches seems to more of a brain thing I’d assume I hope for your opinion coach.

Ik this comment late but I been dealing with the same thing too. Feels like tension and I don't feel punch drunk or dizziness or anything bad it's just my tension headache I feel.

I worked as a Bail Enforcement Agent for 5 years. While moonlighting as a doorman for a rougher inner city night club. After some of our more violent evenings. I'd come home bruised, even had my nose broken a few times. But I never dealt with headaches. The only time sparring caused headaches was after being choked out in Jujitsu.

I used to get them when I first started Jiu Jitsu. I don't think I was hydrated enough and I just wasn't prepared for the amount of sweating I would be doing. Had to make sure on training days I was hydrating literally all day before class. Not striking related so much.

I find that I often get headaches if I'm a little dehydrated after heavy workouts. Other than that I don't really get headaches. So that may also be a factor.

Very good to instruct head posture and stance for sparring in order to minimize injuries. However, me myself once had a neck problem stemming from stiff neck muscles from which I contracted ache in the head when sparring. I went to the chiropractor who stretched the neck in a special manner and after a while the ache was gone. Therefore I would also recommend going to a certified chiropractor in order to evaluate the spine, neck and the base of the skull. Head aches could stem from a physiological problem.

I remember getting headaches as a TKD practitioner vs a Kickboxer. But (I thought) he was cheating. I kept kicking him everywhere and he kept running in and punching me and I was much bigger. If we had no gear on I'd probably have hurt him a lot I thought Am I doing it wrong, e.g. not strong enough or are they cheating?

Hey Ramsey, I am just wondering whether these head aches could mean a health related problem or should it get better over time. Also are head trauma linked to loss of intelligence or is that just a myth?

Did a first sparring session and got a headache on the top of my head evey time I got hit on the jaw or chin. Even though it was very light sparring and they were just light taps. Idk if I should just give up on striking and go back to bjj.

how do all? late teens/early twenties got into alcohol very regular and noticed never had a hangover when mixing with just water/ice. never get headaches at all now as dont have sugar in hot drinks. occasionally make a 2,4,6,8 cake and will get headache as eaten half the cake- with 2 eggs, 4 ounces butter, 6 ounces sugar and 8 ounces self raising flour in a day which equals about 18 teaspoons. perhaps you stopped consuming hard candy/ fizzy cordial, both containing high sugar content. food for thought. taztez.

Hey Ramsey, might you be able to say what Adesanya's idea/goal was at 12 second mark of this video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mV7Cl35qqtCUjrc I was looking at it frame by frame (if you didn't know, you can pause a KZbin video and then press , and . to step one frame forward/backward, best feature ever for analyzing fight videos!), and I don't really understand what Adesanya is reacting to and what outcome is he expecting. Romero does a small step forward, then Adesanya lunges. Was he trying some kind of a feint? Looking at this hilight reel, I feel bad for not seeing that fight when it happened!

I have been thinking about this for a long time, bullying at my school is a very large issue and we had a kid commit suicide because of it recently so I have been thinking about possibley going to my school and asking them to allow me to teach bjj after school on the wrestling mats, there are 2 issues with this other than that of the school possibly saying no, issue 1 is that I dont like the idea of teaching bjj to people who could possibly be bullys and not use the information properly and 2 is that I'm a white belt who has only been training for 3 months, I do have a decent understanding of the game compared to most white belts (or so I've been told) but that doesnt change the fact that I am still new, of course to prevent false advertising and what is know as a "mcdojo" in the mma world I will advertise the training as training from a 3 month old white belt but I would love to have your perspective on this knowing that you started coaching as a white belt too - Cullen

For some reason a lot of people seem to think that simply placing a hand between your face and a strike is going to do the trick. They must have never come across a newton's cradle...🤯

Yesterday I had my first Wrestling class ever. (also first Martial Arts class ever) There was no head trauma whatsoever. But it was quite intense type of training I was not used to. (I was as gassed as gassed gets) I got a headache half way through.... and my ears started poping (like when coming down a mountain). I'd say it's high blood pressure. And I'm guessing it'll go away when I get used to this type of training.

Hi coach. Been a while since you've done a "fighters try women's self defense" video. Thought maybe you wanna give this one a shot? It's a Gracie BJJ video so it would be very interesting to get your teams perspective on this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHLLYZaLZq9osM0

The Head gets used to take impakt to a certain degree. Of course its not healthy. Doing sparring more tuff its the way to learn to fight more tuff. Fighting with strong Opponents means always you can't avoid all impakts. But you can minimize the trouble fore the Brain by strong training.

Oddly enough, I was holding pads for someone and made some sort of sound when they the pad really hard like you do, and the sound I made had my jaw open and slack at just the right moment. Ratted my head just a touch. I bite down on my mouthpiece now to make sure my jaw is locked in place and the muscles in my face are tight. Who know but maybe that’s something.

I think most of them come from the neck not being conditioned. Wearing a boxing headgear actually makes the head 'heavier' and a bigger target. I would ban uppercuts, except very light touches, and keep everything light touches in sparring. Condition the neck in the gym.

Ramsey, i have a question about training punching power. You said shadowboxing with weights doesn't work because it doesn't allow you to open your hands. I saw some gloves with weight on the knucles that allow yo to open your hand and keep them light. Do you thing they could be useful?
