Yes, it’s popular today because it’s a “heritage” leather and many (not all) of the legendary jackets of the past were horsehide. It also breaks in beautifully. Leather was needed in the beginning of the industrial revolution for factories. They needed leather for belts, gaskets, etc. And the reason for the use of horsehide specifically was because of the shoe industry and the fact that horses were everywhere and readily available. Horse butt was used for shoes and they needed to find a use of the remainder of the animal. Then sometime in the very late 1800’s or very early 1900’s someone figured that the front quarter is the perfect weight for garments.

I really appreciate your videos on the minutiae of things like leather choice. I find your own personal experience mirrors my own in most cases and you are very informative. Personally I do have a preference for horsehide, but it seems to be increasingly expensive and difficult to find. I find myself gravitating towards cowhide/steerhide, purely because of availability and price.

My understanding is that the move from using horses for transportation to cars in the early part of the 20th century meant horses became more scarce, thus fueling the move to cow & steer hide. Some motorcycle jacket companies, like Vanson, prefer using steer hide over horse hide. I think this is still somewhat centered around scarcity and cost of quality horse hide material.

10/10 for your knowledge and passion in this video. I love it. What makes the best Shinki leather so different comparing to lower Shinki leather? Is it more beautiful, ages better or is it more durable? Maybe only out of their best hides they can make these top notch leather jackets? To me it sounds like the best of the best hides are much more important than the tannery? What makes the 30's-40's horsehide leathers so much better than the late 50's? If you had 1500-2000 dollars for buying a new leather jacket, which brands would you buy and why ( at the moment ). I really would love to see a video with your opinion on different brands. Just my ego. How you explained the different leathers and qualities... I love it a lot ( if you had your own leather jackets and boots store, you would be sold out every day. I don't have these kind of high value stuff ( and not the passion ), but I love to see it, and to see your love for these beautiful things. I'm maybe more happy watching your videos ( the stuff, your knowledge and how you speak or represent your channel ). I have a leather jacket and boots, but after some days it's just a jacket and just a pair of boots to me. I'm wishing you and your wife all the best.Thank you, and again I love this whole video a lot.You don't need to answer my questions, because I'll continue watching your channel! Thank's bro 🙏❤😘🙏 ( I'm sorry for my English! )

Thanks for another informative video! Could you consider making a video on how to tell if certain new leather jackets will have the potential to age well and show different texture or grain than it does on day one?

I have two horsehide jackets, a Schott made from Shinki and a Butterscotch made from Horween. Both are fantastic, but the Shinki is way stiffer than the Horween.
@iuhuh101103 ай бұрын
I agree 💯, I feel like a lot of people go with horsehide just because it's horsehide. Cowhide can look similar and is often less stiff and more comfortable. And they don't even think about how supremely comfortable deerskin is and how that might be something they want.

I'd really love to know more about how you evaluate the qualities of leather. Like what makes a particular leather worthwhile for you, i don't imagine it's just the aesthetics.

I love your content so much, man. You're such an enthusiast and it shows. I actually picked up my first horsehide double ride jacket from Double Helix. It's the Deviant LAW (LA Weight) from Snake Oil Provisions. PLEASE tell me you think Double Helix is worth it 😅

When it comes to A-2s the Italian horsehide is perfect. Has to be thin veggie tanned though. Horse hide, cowhide and goat skin will all last you a lifetime if the jacket is quality made anyway. Horse hide will have the longest break in period though but when it is it’s fantastic.

I just got my first horsehide jacket.. it's a Free Wheelers Mulholland knock off.. black tea core.. id love to try a CXL or Shinki jacket but overall.., id rather wear something lightweight like lambskin than my dad's old Perfecto from the 70s.. it's just too damn heavy.. which is funny, cause i love heavy duty PNW boots.. but i don't like all that weight on my upper body with these thicker leather jackets.. idk, i admire them, but comfort n price wise, idk if they're really worth it..

I've been telling people something similar for a while. Everyone wants to be able to check off a list of features for their jackets and boots without consideration for actual use case.

How would you rate the quality of the Japanese brand Y’2 Leathers and Double Helix Leather Jackets and would you buy the Y’2 Leathers engineer boots?

Ive owned both. I had the y2 type 1 indigo, and I have the double helix type leather jacket. The double helix is better.

@@rareELL I also own both as well and can say both are great; Y’2 leather appears to fit better for my body type each has its strengths; if u ever get to view their bullhide, I highly recommend checking it out it’s greater than expectations

Japanese horsehide jackets are definitely overrated. People can state a case for Japanese denim but leather isn’t all that complicated. The tanning process is going to be similar in most places. Most garment makers can put it together pretty easy.

Just like boot leather, the quality of the leather is more important, the construction quality is more important, the animal feels more like a point of pride as opposed to an indicator of quality

Himel's what is from India? From the very end of the video. I hate Badalassi. You (Jake) and other KZbinrs talk it up but it's the worst leather for a jacket IMO. I don't need a jacket that sounds like my grandma's old couch covered in plastic. The worst! Badalassi is my one leather regret. By contrast. Vicenza HH is soft, it's supple, it's beautiful, it's not embarrassing to wear. I love it. It's the best all arounder.

@@ShanK_K yeah they might not be perfect but the fact that they are making the same, and in some cases better, quality jackets in the same place today is impressive for such a big brand. I have cowhide, water buffalo hide, and lambskin leather jackets. From your video and description it seems like horse leather is similar to water buffalo leather. How do they compare? The water buffalo jacket I have is glossier, grainier and grippier than the cowhide jacket I have which has the distinctive pebbled texture.
