Exactly!! I was a beginner artist in IBS paint too and my first drawing was using a base that it GIVES YOU. I drew the clothes and used the base hair and I cannot figure out why people think it’s so wrong. As someone starting out it’s a great way to learn poses and it’s a great tool, made for you to use! You’re not stealing from anything, and I feel like people just chose to hate on people who are learning. Great video btw I really enjoyed it and you had a lot of great points! And the art was beautiful 😍 Congratulations on the subs!!

There are some cases where art stealers trace someone elses art to make bases off of, then unsuspecting people come across and think it's okay to use. But it's not their fault, it's the art stealers' faults.

I 100% agree with you. People need to start somewhere. We all started by either using references didn't we? Either way, in my opinion, as long as the original artist gives permission for the references to be used for another person's art, (in this case there is permission since it is free to the public), it is completely fine as long as they don't take all the credit. In this case, tracing bases that are free to use and given permission to use isn't stealing, but if you want to learn to improve your own art, you can always study or reference the bases. You explained it really well. Thanks! ❤

I think tracing someone else’s art is completely fine as long as the artist hasn’t said they don’t want anyone tracing their art. It’s also good to generally ask permission first, but even if you don’t credit should be given if you trace regardless. I’ve traced poses a lot because I’m still practicing and figuring out how to do that, and it’s been helping me learn the right way to draw the anatomy in certain poses.

Plus they can also use those bases to overline some parts and try to understand how the anatomy works, which is anothrr plus when using the bases?? Its weird how they hate when ur art looks bad when ur a beginner but also hate when you use something to help you learn.

I used to use bases ALL THE TIME because I was scared to try drawing bodies, but after a while of trying to understand the more complex shapes of the human body, I got the courage to actually try. Without the bases I wouldn’t have known anything and I sure as hell wouldn’t have a few art pieces I’m really proud of! And now I can draw bodies on my own-it’s far from perfect, but what matters is that it’s improvement. Also I usually draw without references because that’s just easier for me o(^▽^)o So overall, bases CAN help you improve as long as you know HOW to improve, and that “how” is different for everyone, so you shouldn’t be afraid to try tracing bases-or even other art-as long as you don’t publish it on the latter (at least not without permission). P.S, sorry if the wording is shitty, I’m typically very self-deprecating so looking at it from this lens is pretty hard. (ㅅ´ ˘ `)

They said they same thing about deviantart bases years ago, complaining and even bullying people, mostly kids for using MS paint or other bases for ponies or anime or even adventure time. Bases are a tool to use if you want to practice something without having to make an entirely new art piece like practicing coloring or clothes or whatever. You can study them for posing and how it looks/works. We are allowed to use tools to our needs so we can have fun and/or improve. Improving is not a requirement unless you intend to make it a business of sorts like commissions or even bigger opportunities like galleries or applying for art related jobs. Also the idea "all art has to be pretty" is so wrong. There's a japanese artist that makes rather horrific gore and blood related pieces to explore and show the ideas of a womans pain in various ways as well as being mixed with medical imagery. It's well drawn but equally horrific and makes you feel that pain and horror that comes with what its trying to convey. I cannot remember her name but I think Ponder Sprocket mentioned it in her video about Tearzah at one point.

(As long as you’re not tracing someone’s art without permission like Bre said) but if you’re looking to improve, referencing/heavily referencing instead of tracing could help a ton!!

tracing is fine when you use it to improve and don’t trace either without permission or take credit for whats not yours. like if its gonna sit in your gallery and youre not showing anyone why not? its a good tool to learn. As someone who loved using the IBIS paint x bases when I first started I do think it helped me jumpstart on anatomy! But, its good to experiment and learn to draw anatomy on your own instead of fully relying on bases. I have a friend who uses free bases and you can clearly tell the difference between when she traces the anatomy V/S when she uses it as a reference. I will say that over time her anatomy has gotten A LOT better and her stylized anatomy is super dooper cute lmao! its just good to try not to rely on them and instead try to branch out and learn from them ^^ also great video lol ❤

I don’t know what’s the problem with toons. This is my first time asking you this but I hope you talk about this, and the ships like Scraps x Goob, they’re siblings, but there’s more disgusting ones like Toodles(a minor) x her father(Rodger) it’s kind of nasty, and I’m pretty sure there’s more weird ships.

@BreDrawz
@BreDrawz 13 күн бұрын
i might expand on this in its own video, and ive actually been debating on doing so for a long while, but aside from all the arguing of whether or not it should be in museums or their worth, i still view it as art no matter what. art is made with emotion (whether intentional or not), and provokes emotion. the amount of people getting pissed over contemporary art, modern art, and abstract art PROVE that its art. it’s literally provoking an emotion from you!! personally, my favorite argument is “so if i spread 💩 on a canvas is that art?” since considering its done out of anger for these types of art, a could technically be considered a commentary on these forms of art which i find so funny cause it proves my point 😭 anyway though, i find it perfectly fine to dislike it, but to say its not art is objectively wrong. because while it might not fit YOUR description of what art is, it doesnt make it “not art”. :)

Tracing and copying, from what I've learned in a college-level Art History class, is a tried and true starting point/learning tactic that's existed since the rennaisance. It's especially helpful when it's from a piece or master that uses an art style or technique you'd like to use or replicate. Yes, it can become a crutch if you want to be serious and you never learn how to break what you're seeing down to basic shapes, but even professionals will work on improving their craft by doing master studies. If it's a bad thing to do, tracing paper wouldn't exist, they wouldn't have you do master studies in school, and they wouldn't be making the mannaquins and the apps that are literally made to be used as references (plus the artists and coders behind said programs and mannequins and the models used to make reference photos and that show up to class sessions would all be out of jobs).

Fr its just a base that is given to you! As long as you give credit its fine to trace! And also there are idiot out there saying that i must learn the rules before i break them and then if i dont then i will never improve like what? And they also say that unrealistic art would look janky without it like why should i learn the rules if im going to break them anyway? Learning the rules for me is just wasting time. But its probably gonna be good for someone else, a really good advice i have is to learn things that will help improve your style in a way you like! For example learning to draw cartoony eyes would be really helpful for a cartoonist but learning to draw realistic eyes will not help whatsoever and waste time for a cartoonist

Tracing was how I first started drawing digitally. I used bases ALL THE TIME. And when I started drawing humans I traced (sort of) photos and drew my own characters with their own clothes etc. The only reason I didn't use bases was because I was afraid of being attacked for it. It helped me SO MUCH. It did not stunt my growth, it actually helped me immensely when it came to learning anatomy. I wouldn't be able to draw as well as I do now in a year. I improved quickly and learned so much. BUT, it is important to challenge yourself! If you are a beginner, even if you trace, you should also study anatomy a bit or whatever you want to draw without relying on a base to trace from. Use a reference photo and try your best to replicate it. Trust me, it'll help your improvement in the long run. Even if you don't post it or it doesn't look quite right, practice is important!

As someone who started drawing with ibispaint bases a long time ago I don’t see the problem! Even though I’ve stopped drawing with them and sometimes use them as references I still think it’s a good way to practice anatomy and poses! Honestly, just draw whatever you think will help you grow (if you want to grow of course)! It’s your art journey, not some rando on the internet’s!

Can you do a video on how you do commissions and where you started and what apps you use? I’m very curious as an artist who wants to open commissions

I trace little drawings i find for body and arm practice. Ive never posted them, just traced to learn the body proportions! Those who trace other peoples art and post it claiming its their own is what sets tracing as a bad example, and thats exactly what you shouldnt do. In my opinion, people should trace for learning reasons, like hands, bodys, arms, hair, ect. It helps them understand the artstyle more, and gives them extra practice and understanding. But i do agree people shouldnt trace to "steal art" and if they do trace it shoukd be with permission!

my method of drawing is taking bases then break them down like how you draw without the base shapes then build back up cause i have mentality of thinking that drawing it on one for one like just outlining base then add clothes would get me nowhere

I’m taking this as my sign to draw with some bases, because I’ve been drawing only the shoulders and up recently bc I can’t do posing and proportions properly yet 😞 I would love to work my way to where I can draw whole body shots from scratch, but I’m not there yet Thank you Bre, I’m going to try doing some tonight/tomorrow ^^

I mean, I used to use them but then people said if you use ibis paint bases it’s not real art and yeah I no longer use them but since you approval of them, I’m going to use them a bit because I could draw poses by myself

I legit still use ibis paint bases (and reference images from Pinterest) for some (not all because I mostly draw angry birds) of my art work whenever I need a specific pose (mainly when drawing gijinka). How I do it is that I draw over the base in my personal art style so it stays consistent, hide the base layer then readjust anything to fit the art work better (often times, it will be the hands, arms, shoulders or stomach area). Bases off of Pinterest, I just eyes ball it. Reference and bases aren't bad and were always ment to be tools. The only time I would trace on a base one to one is to understand clothing on a more realistic body because my art style has similar energy to Lego Monkey Kid, Steven Universe and other animation media. It may not work for everyone but it worked for me for many years because I had so much exposure to people being friendly with the use of bases on Sony Sketch/Sketchers United. I may not use that place anymore but I'm glad I had that experience and know how to use bases wisely.
