I once wondered how stab-resistant motorcycle Kevlar jeans are, now I know the answer and so will you! As I say I know this really is a pointless test but I really just wanted to know!

This reminds me of when i was at a training meeting at work and the subject was about how resisting our work trousers were if you came up against sharps. For some strange reason our instructor brought in sharps to pass around the class, of which someone decided to try it out and stabbed themselves in the thigh not understanding that this would inflict injury.The trousers were only designed for light contact with sharps.

When I had my crash, the nurses at A&E tried to cut my kevlar jeans off with the toughcuts (you know, the scissors that's supposed to cut through anything) It failed miserably to cut through my jeans (my jeans had kevalr all the way to the ankle) had to have a very dodgy and awkward removal of the leg, the usual way. Good job I wasn't feeling any pain. Ever since I've pondered the same question as you.

I can say for the other video I did on patreon with the jeans I had to cut them and yes it was not easy and I got to thinking. Damn these must be a nightmare in serious crashes but defo worth it!

Whenever I come onto KZbin to watch a particular video, I instantly get distracted by your latest upload and have to watch it first! Honestly thought this was a rant about lorry drivers throwing bottles of piss out of their windows initially 😂 (I think you need to make that video!) Good test though and I can confirm, having worn a stab vest on a daily basis in my previous job (domestic cat wrangler) that they do indeed contain many, many layers of Kevlar in an interwoven sandwich of stabless joy!

In fairness even the British Standard EN388 6.4 test for puncture resistance (for CE marked PPE) doesn't use a sharpened point penetrator ... they use a rounded point ... and the highest level awarded for that is L4 which has to resist up to 150 newtons (about 15 kilos) of force put on the rounded point 😉 .... most slash proof kevlar clothing for security use etc is only L2 which has puncture resistance up to 60 newtons (about 6 kilos)

Kevlar is only stab proof because of the way its weaved together, a stab vest would not survive being dragged along tarmac. Kevlar jeans are woven to survive friction more than penetration. Still a great video.
@another3997

A kevlar stab vest is as at least as abrasion resistant as any kevlar jeans, almost certainly more so. They are constructed from many layers of kevlar, and there's no way you will get through them all just by sliding along tarmac after a crash. Stab resistant Kevlar is tightly woven, but that doesn't mean it's not abrasion resistant.

Kevlar is really bad as stopping slow pointy/sharp stuff. Normally shivs/knives just push the fibres aside. That is why stab proof wests have IIRC aluminium-oxide scales in them. There is some new tech threnching the kevlar with titanium-oxid IIRC to get a non-newtonian-fluid effect, which should stop slow and pointy objects.
@another3997
@another3997 5 ай бұрын
Dupont created a version of their Kevlar fabric designed specifically to stop knives and shanks, originally known as "Kevlar Correctional". It isn't covered in scales, and I've never seen a stab vestcthat uses them. AL oxide is a very hard ceramic used on hard armour plates to help pulverise high velocity projectiles, such as rifle rounds. It's also expensive. Knife resistant fabric needs to be both strong and tightly woven. However, "spike" resistance usually requires adding a different material rather than more layers of Kevlar. Otherwise the armour gets very bulky. A layer of modern, welded steel chainmail or hard plastic plates, often made from Polycarbonate will do the job.

Even body armour is rated as resistant to slash and penetration it will not claim anything more.
@robinwells8879
@robinwells8879 Жыл бұрын
You need the equivalent of chain mail or a great thickness of woven kevlar. Chainsaw trousers have a couple of centimetres of the stuff and it tends to clog up the teeth of a chainsaw thus slowing the cut and perhaps even stalling the engine. I am slightly disturbed by the things that are running through your head! I am sensing inner rage!
@another3997

There are certainly other materials that can be as effective as Kevlar, if not more so.Technically, you would use the type of Kevlar fabric specifically designed to resist thrusts from blades and sharp objects., which is substantially different to Kevlar used to stop bullets. In tests, a standard NIJ 3A or UK HG2 bullet resistant vest can be penetrated by sharp blades relatively easily. Stab resistant Kevlar is less effective at stopping bullets. Unlike a blade, bullets are not actually sharp, they don't easily cut and slide between fibres, and they are usually designed to somewhat deform upon impact.

iirc, stab proof vests are kevlar composite, like carbon fibre
@another3997
@another3997 5 ай бұрын
I believe kevlar stab vests usually just contain a tightly woven kevlar fabric. Carbon fibre is light, but is best embedded in resin to make a light and very stiff composite. Weight for weight, it's not as good at resisting penetration as Kevlar.

Stab proof ??????? You want your outer layer to resist penetration by being drageed along a lumpy stony road. Piercing the material with a knife is pointless. Do the same to my modern Hood AAA jeans and you will get the same result as you did here. Fun but pointless. Love what you do with the channel. The kevlar used in ballistic protection isn't the paper thin stuff used in motorcycle jeans, it's a thick carboard like substance.
@Jonesykins
@Jonesykins Жыл бұрын
You're more or less on the dot. The reason the jeans didn't work is because they are usually just a one or two layer of Kevlar, they're there to protect your arse and legs when you're sliding. There is nowhere for the impact of the knife to be absorbed. Whereas the Kevlar in a vest is upwards of 30 layers of 200GSM (0.24mm) Kevlar. Which allows the impact of objects to be absorbed and distributed, bullets, knives, etc.
@EnlightenedSavage
@EnlightenedSavage Жыл бұрын
Kevlars strength is in the pulling direction. That's what makes it bulletproof. When a bullet hits it that causes the impact of spread across the material. Knives don't allow the material to be pulled. It cuts it before it can demonstrate up any resistance.

Stab vests are as spicy says at the end of the video made up of multiple layers of Kevlar woven in different directions. The single layer used in motorcycle clothing is there for it's abrasion resistance when you're sliding down the road.
