Its kinda Funny... its not actual Koreans who say theyre superior. Btw, Koreans dont discriminate to show supremecy. If Koreans discriminate, its based on supremecy and intimidency not the other way around. For instance, some Koreans may be discriminating against a black african from poor nation as it would usually mean they would not have acheived much due to low education, while if Koreans know if youre from a rich Europian country, people would look again regardless of race. ... But if youre from Ethiopia, no Koreans would dare do so, at least out of fear for other Koreans. Why? Because Ethiopia helped S.Korea in times of need during the Korean war. Same with China and Japan. Most Koreans dislike Chinese who are rude despite China being much stronger. Because China helped NKorea and invaded S.K. Not to mention them trying to claim Korean history and culture as their own. For example, saying history of Goguryeo(>Goryeo>Coree>Corea) is Chinese origin, or kimchi is just paochai, and our hanbok韓服 is their hanfu漢服, yet clothes they bring are from Ming 明服, which is similar to Goryeo cloths as Goryeo culture was trending back then in China. (Recorded in history books). ... even said so, most will still be kind and greeting to Chinese and Japanese .. as long as one keeps their manners unlike Sommale.

You show to be a narcissist, typical of Asians, and a typical self-complex, typical of Asians too. And Asia is the largest continent, you are not a minority and much less "oppressed," it is a completely ridiculous and victimist narrative. And being a minority is not synonymous with being oppressed, that is another great false and victimist narrative. The power groups that run the world and the elite of each country are a minority and are not and will never be oppressed. Immigrants in a country that is not theirs MUST remain a minority because if they become a majority, racial or ethnic supplanting has occurred and genocide has been committed against the population and they will take over the country. Then they will have won a silent war (as most wars are), and that is what countries like Korea, Japan, China, etc. try to avoid, but the serious thing and what shows how narcissistic you are is that you believe you have the right to do it to other countries, especially the West and the countries that have always been more developed. I can see the nuance between the comparison between Korea's racism vs the United States. The former is one of the most homogenous countries on Earth. In countries like this there is an ethnic identity to citizenship. If you are not that, you re not a citizen, you are not Korean. There is no culture of immigration or multiculturalism. They did not claim to the world they are about this. The United States was founded by engaging in a massive native genocide, followed by hundreds of years of chattel slavery. At the same time, the country continued claiming they were the shining city on the hill. That the tired and huddled masses of the world can come to for a better life for them and their family. The Constitution claims all men are created equal, we have a lot of literature calling ourselves The Great Experiment, etc... We make a claim of being egalitarian, a melting pot, etc.. and when that creates HIGH expectations of the nation. So when the reality doesn't even come close to the picture being painted, that difference is jarring and seriously offputting.

-The prejudice that Korea is the country with the most plastic surgery in the world comes from ISAPS' 2011 data. Based on this data, people say that Korea has the highest number of people who have undergone plastic surgery in terms of percentage per population. However, in this statistic, non-surgical procedures such as dermatological procedures and hair procedures were also considered plastic surgery. As a result, Korea ranked first in this statistic. However, if you look only at the number of surgical operations, the figures in Greece, Italy and Brazil are almost the same as those in Korea. And many errors were pointed out in this statistic at the time. This statistic includes the number of foreigners who received dermatology and plastic surgery procedures in Korea. And most plastic surgery clinics in Korea are located in Seoul. However, it was also pointed out as an error that the people of Seoul were set as a representative sample of all Koreans in this statistic. And according to the 2018 ISAPS statistics, Korea did not even rank in the top 10 in the total number of plastic surgeries. Australia, Argentina, and Colombia, which ranked in the top 10, have smaller populations than South Korea, but as a percentage of their population, more people have undergone plastic surgery than South Koreans. ISAPS data is the only data that investigates plastic surgery rates by country. But Data investigated in 2011, in which many errors were pointed out, were spread on the Internet, which created a false prejudice that Koreans had the most plastic surgery in the world. -Let me tell you the facts based on statistics. In Korea, 14 out of 1,000 people have undergone plastic surgery. (Source: ISAPS) This includes not only Koreans but also foreigners who come to Korea to receive plastic surgery. However, of these 14 people, 8 had non-surgical plastic surgery (skin care, hair care) and 6 had surgical plastic surgery (2 had breast surgery, 2 had fat removal surgery, and 2 had facial surgery). So, this means that the population in Korea who has undergone facial plastic surgery is 0.2%. However, this includes not only Koreans but also foreigners who have undergone plastic surgery in Korea,

And TBH, to look “Korean” is basically referring to your typical ‘good-looking’ NEA archetype; slender eyes, slim fit w/ slightly lighter on the skin shading (can’t believe this is still a thing, SMH). Koreans are also a very family-oriented bunch and while some girls from the west might appreciate that overtime the expectations from potential family pressures and a super rigid society that promotes functioning in unison / ethnic homogeneity might break the deal. Not to mention living in those East Asian countries can be a pressure cooker, especially if one is used to the work/life balance here in the States. It’s just a fad and overtime the obsession will demystify itself.

Actually this is not as new as people think, almost a tale as old as time but also has more complications to it. I remember researching Asian Studies journals and books back in college and this aspect of Koreans/Korean Americans talk about that, but with more context; it’s more socio-economic in most cases. It was noted that the more upper class/conservative Koreans/Korean Americans that tend to be insular in their community or actually living in white communities tend to show more of that superiority complex, ranging from preference of being called Korean instead of “asian” to only fraternizing only with other Koreans and/white (socio-economically dating upwards). On the flip side Koreans that are more on the middle/lower socioeconomic spectrum and live among other minorities don’t tend to carry those superiority complex traits, feeling more relatable with other Asians/minorities. If anything they consider the Koreans w/superiority complexes more like “sell outs” or even “white washed.” There’s a lot of other factors to consider, but socioeconomic factors is a significant one. I don’t think all Koreans think of themselves superior as a whole, just depends on which group/community you’re asking.

So there's a lot to break down with this TikToker's accusations. 1. Yes, there is both racism and lookism in Korea. However, I'd say that lookism is much more universally integrated into their culture, and racism is more of a subconscious byproduct due to their stereotypes of what people from other ethnicities look like. >98% of Korea's population is ethnically Korean. The vast majority have never met a Vietnamese person in their entire life. For many of them, NewJeans' Hanni might literally be the first they've ever seen, period. 2. It is human nature to have a preference towards people that are similar to you. In fact, any society that generally agrees a different ethnicity is visually superior to them has most likely been colonized by them at some point. The majority of Vietnamese people do NOT believe Koreans are naturally better looking. My mom comments all the time about how a pretty Korean actor/actress probably had plastic surgery. 3. By now, almost everyone in Korea knows Hanni is Vietnamese. Yet she is not only one of the most popular NewJeans members, but one of the most popular idols in Korea, period. As of January (when this TikToker made her video), Hanni was the 3rd most popular female idol in Korea, behind only Minji and Jennie. That means the Korean public adored her more than 3 out of 4 of her fellow NewJeans members, all of whom are at least half Korean. It also means they adored her more than Korean idols such as Blackpink's Jisoo and Rose, all the Twice members, all the Aespa members, all the IVE members (including Wonyoung), etc.

This is probably what happened. She most likely thought she would not face any discrimination/xenophobia in Korea because she's an Asian-American, but rudely discovered that Koreans do not see her as the same as Koreans. So she got upset and accused Koreans of having superiority complex. What she failed to realize is that Koreans in S. Korea do not consider even Korean-Americans as the same as Koreans and there is certain amount of discrimination against them as well. It's just how the mono-cultural society like S. Korea operates. From my experience I wouldn't go as far to say its Korean vs Vietnamese or anything specific. But it does exist at a common enough level that it warrants having a fair and open discussion about it. It does very little service to trivialise it as a stereotype or to derail the argument with pedantic arguments like: NOT 100% think that way. There are ways to approach the togetherness is strong message, and brushing it under the rug in the way these guys are implying is NOT the way. Korean here and there is a strong reason majority of us are negative towards 조선족(Korean Chinese). First was because of some serious murders done by Korean Chinese. We already had negative perceptions over them because of voice phishing crimes, but when we have multiple murders happening in Korea by Korean Chinese continuously over the years, we can’t help but to think that they are dangerous. I do know that reason for their high crime rate might be because they have big population here, but that’s how public opinion was first made. Also they are Chinese obviously but when they come to Korea, they suddenly say that they are ‘some what Korean’ and ask for benefits that Koreans have in Korea(like wtf? We freakin pay taxes for it and no others(Korean Russians, Korea Americans etc) do this). Not to mention they have very different political ideology from most of us & they are really proud of Chinese everything.(which kind of go against themselves claiming ‘some what Korean’ and seeking for benefits) I don’t know if you know, but there is ongoing culture & historical feud between Korea and China, so them being proud and being ignorant over Korean culture doesn’t really help to view them in a good way.

Yeah, I kind of both agree and disagree. First of all, it is true that on a societal level, for east asian countries in general, there is this prejudice of southeast asians being looked down upon on and that *some* koreans do have this sort of nationalistic superiority complex. That is undeniable. But the biggest flaw in this girl's argument lies in the fact that saying someone looks korean is the equivalent of saying theyre pretty/handsome. That's a false correlation made out of thin air. Who determined that? If she lived in Korea for 2 years she knows well that not every Korean looks like a kpop idol and there's plenty of 'average looking' koreans.
@Peeanorun Жыл бұрын
I think she meant that when the Vietnamese Kpop idol got complimented as pretty because she looks "Korean" [and Korean by media standards], it was a back-handed compliment that was given by Koreans. We know that there are 'average' looking Koreans but that's something that's not often shared a lot. Therefore, being compared to Korean looks as "pretty/handsome" relates back to the Korean media beauty standard that is pushed out/exported to the world. It's not exactly a false correlation. She does have a point and you can understand it further if you had this experience as a SEA.

I'm a Korean. In Korea, to say "You look like a Vietnamese" is equivalent to saying, "You are ugly." And when a Korean person is told that the other party initially thought the person was from SE Asia, they will get offended. But this was so way before "the Korean wave." And while SE Asians still face prejudice in South Korea today, I think it's little better now. With development of multiculturalism and multicultural families, the society is being more informed about discrimination and prejudice against SE Asians while its not changing fast enough for people who faces such discrimination and prejudice in daily basis in the country. Any Americans who want to point out how the U.S. isn’t the only country with racism by pointing out South Korea, are disingenuous. Problem of racism in the U.S. is problem, not because anyone thought that the U.S. is the only country with racism(I don't think anyone accused the U.S. as such), but because racism exist in the U.S. its not in white person's place to tell SE Asians should tone down their criticism of racism in the U.S., simply because racism exist in South Korea.

As a Korean I'm just glad the Koreans in Korea have made a splash on the International stage, And would love to see the same from all the asian countries typically ignored.... Their moment in the spotlight with increased tourism and increased prosperity. SEA Minus singapore Is still a lot poorer unfortunately then east asia Meaning that it might take longer. Historically, most of those outside of Asia would have really only known or experienced asian culture through japan or china, With this interest in korea being a rather recent phenomenon. It is not a moment to feel superior., just " relieved" and proud . Unfortunately this rise in korean popularity also happens to coincide with a moment in which the u s and china are in conflict, Which has resulted in anti-Chinese rhetoric and a scenario in which some will treat the chinese as the bad asians and the rest of The asians as "the good ones.." I'm sure from the chinese american perspective this can get really annoying... And indeed cause some level of resentment amongst some. As for the Vietnamese American Girl, Things between the Koreans and Vietnamese are tough especially considering the role Koreans played in america's War against vietnam.. The Resentment is there and perhaps rightfully so considering that there were instances of crimes against humanity perpetrated against the vietnamese by the korean troops. Horrible stuff . Don't know how the situation can possibly change and it seems like. It might be something that goes on for a while just like how Much of asia is still somewhat bitter towards the japanese government Basically no no I do not think that as a Korean I am superior to any Other ethnic group and i know That we could all learn from From what others have done right.

Idk if I agree with this. Obviously the Korean beauty standard is outrageously high, plastic surgery is an epidemic there. That said, the vast majority of Koreans don't meet the standard and are attacked mercilessly when they become celebrities for their skin tone, weight, eyelids, etc. A weird trend I've noticed is kpop companies scouting Chinese girls to be the "visual" members of their groups. If they thought that Koreans looked better than Chinese, I doubt they'd be doing that. If there's a Chinese member, she's almost always there to look good, not as the main vocalist. Just off the top of my head thinking Xiaoting, Tzuyu, Yiren, Shuhua, Wonyoung is half Chinese. That or they go way overboard praising celebs that are half white.

They aren't there just as the random rapper or main dancer or whatever, they're usually held up on a pedestal as the ideal beauty. This goes against what they're saying in this video about Koreans believing themselves to have the most superior visuals on the planet. When I was a kid minding my own business, rednecks in passing vehicles yelled threats of violence and epithets at me. In Virginia, Southern heifers would talk to me like I just got off the boat. At work, people would ask me if I speak English or tell me how well I speak English. When I started attempting to learn Japanese, I was asked why I wanted to talk like a............ It´s the G word I really hate. When I was in Russia, I was told Latinos were okay and at least I´m not a Jew. Even when I visit in Koreatown LA, people look at me like "WTF is that guy doing here!" As a Korean I will say It's really not productive or fair to treat cultures like Korea from an American/Western lens without some added nuance. Korea is 98% ethnic Korean, and just a couple decades ago it was more like 99.5% or more. Having foreigners in the country is a very new phenomenon and societies learn to accept others who are different better over time. Just look at how white Americans viewed blacks and other minorities only a few decades ago and many still to this day. Most of this type of thinking from Koreans comes from not understanding and having such limited interaction with other cultures. Older Koreans may have gone their whole lives without meeting a Vietnamese person for example. The divides will become more normalized over time like it has in more multicultural societies all over the world.

The strong are relaxed and the weak are sensitive. The strong do what they want without wondering what the weak think. The weak are always looking out for the strong and reacting sensitively. Sensitive people are sensitive because they themselves feel inferior to Koreans. Imagine foreigners browsing Korean communities, translating what Koreans say to each other and analyzing it for themselves. The opposite rarely happens. This happens because of inferiority complexes. In fact, Koreans don't even know what Korean beauty standards are, but foreigners are more sensitive to KBS than Koreans. Let go of inferiority complexes and take it easy. You have to be mentally in a pretty inferior state to be sensitive to compliments like "you look Korean" or "you're pretty". Develop yourself instead of observing what Koreans think.

China is traditionally an empire with multiple ethnic group - the stereotype i grew up being taught is that Northern Chinese/Mandarin-Han look down on Southern Chinese/Cantonese. BTW.. The whole Korean beauty = all plastic is overblown spread through Chinese and Japanese media. Sure rate of plastic surgery in Korea is high but lot of that growth is due to economic affluence and its entertainment industry. Just random interesting fact, sometime in 1200's there's Vietnamese prince Lý Long Tường (Yi Yong Sang in Korea) who came to Korea and settled and started Hwasan Yi which is one of the many different Lee's (Yi, Rhee) of Korea. Hwasan Yi of Korea (Yi from volcano [region that he first settled]) are all descendants of that Vietnamese prince. BTW Koreans had Korean pride back in 1950's when it was poorest country...poorer than all other Asian countries...poorer than North Korea. Being proud of heritage is different than superior complex. Also saying someone looks Korean just means that just that. A physical observation sometimes is just that, not a judgement or superiority or hidden underlying meaning. I think it says more about who she is and how she feels about herself. I go into Vietnamese restaurants or Chinese restaurants and they make a judgment call and speak to me in their native language. No big deal. I see Asians get mad that others cannot identify what country they came from yet call entire continents of people Mexicans. And if you go to that continent any Asians just become Chino. And, yes I realize that there are some ignorant or pompous asses and racist in Korea just like anywhere else in the world. And I realize that usually they're small but loud minority not entire general population like this girl is trying to paint. There was time when Jerry Springer was really popular in Korea so they would ask if Americans were all like that....So I told them yes that's why we carry guns.

The so-called "ancient Vietnamese" themselves are Chinese. North Vietnam(交趾/安南is real history name) has always been Chinese territory (until 1910). There are many ancient Chinese living here. They are not Vietnamese. It just that the Vietnamese have stolen the history of the local Chinese. 李 Li / Lee (Last Name ) is the second most common surname in China. There are more than 100 million Han people (漢族) with the surname 李Li /Lee in China. In ancient times, Koreans and vietnamese did not have first names and surnames, and they will not be written into historical records by the Chinese. ------------------------- In 1910, Japan occupied China Chaoxian 朝鮮 (today Korean Peninsula). A large number of local Chinese officials and families fled back to China other city(or other Southeast Asian countries). The Chinese family genealogy (and local Chinese historical records) of the Chinese who stayed on the China Chaoxian 朝鮮 (today Korean Peninsula) were stolen by indigenous slaves. Go. At that time, most of the Korean indigenous intended to pretend to be members of the Chinese nobility (discovered by the Japanese when registering) and change a Chinese name, so this population registration was completely invalid. The situation of the Vietnamese and Koreans at that time was similar. This is why Both Koreans and Vietnamese know the way Chinese names are used. They are originally a indigenous without surnames and given names.

I just think Chinese don't promote looks as hard as South Korea. Think about people like Lay Zhang, Jackson Wang, Kris Wu etc but they are not as big in China as the Kpop stars are in South Korean market.

Did you ever watch Mainland Chinese cinema and drama? Just search about Yang Yang and Xu WeiZhou for male celeb, or Ju Jingyi and Bai Lu for female celeb. They are comparable to K-Drama actors. Probably not very well known in US since you don't have iQIYI and WeTV as streaming apps.
