This has a lot to do with the representation of Chinese people in Western media. There are thirst traps for Korea and Japan. Honestly, you just don’t really get the feeling that Americans find Chinese people hot, but it’s got at least something to do with the lack of hot Chinese people in American media. Cambodian-American writing here, we also get done dirty. 🤙🏽💀

This is funny because nobody can tell the difference between most of the Asians, not even Asians themselves. I know. I’m from Asia and went to Korea, Japan, China, and others. Those, even Asians, that said they can tell the difference are overestimating their abilities whether they are Asians or not. Some only know because of the language the person speaks. Think about it, if you put 100 Asians celebrities together will those that say they can tell the difference be able to differentiate them 100%, 80%, or even 50% of the time if the options are from 10 different Asian countries? No. Let’s just admit it. Most countries don’t like the Chinese government so in extension the Chinese people. In my travels, most has shown their unconscious bias and some very conscious bias towards Chinese people. I even have Chinese people telling me other Asians are better than Chinese people. Now, that’s sad. I can prove it. Ask any Asian and tell them you think they are Chinese. If they are not Chinese and acts like they are offended, then it means they don’t like Chinese. If they don’t get offended then it’s either they are Chinese or they are not bias. Now, if you tell the Asian you think they are Korean, then they don’t get angry, 99% of the time. Most White Americans don’t even know what kind of “White” they are. And often times, they try to figure it out themselves by going off their last names, which of course means NOTHING most of the time because people change their names all the time, especially more recent Whites whose ancestors immigrated into the U.S. from within the last 150 years.😂 If they want to put their ignorance in proud display in public by trying to “guess” a Asian person’s heritage, just say to them, “Oh yeah, what kind of White are you?” See how they like it for a change!

I was introduced to k-pop in 1999. That's how I fully knew about Koreans. Prior to that, growing up as a kid (primarily in the late '80s-90s) I knew about Bruce Lee and Chinese food. In 1992, I realized that a lot of my favorite video games were made by the Japanese which I always admired that and wanted to become a game developer because of (which I did). And then the explosion of anime in 1999 when I discovered the I- channel (later turn to AZN channel). My cousin, has a lot (I do mean A LOT) of martial arts movies that are so rare to find. I always thought the Asian culture is cool but a lot of people believe that Koreans are cool because of K-pop and Japan is cool because of anime. They feel that China doesn't have anything cool.

China has a lot of cool stuff but it's more old world cool such as martial arts, classic cuisine, and philosophy. They don't have anything on an international lvl that engages w youth culture that much such as music, TV shows, fashion, skin care, and anime like Japan and Korea. Every now and then we'll have a Chinese movie which is great but it seems to be something that only pops up and gets noticed every few years whereas Korea and Japan is pumping out new things that go viral every few months.

This reminds me of a video someone posted of a considerate airport worker in China. She was standing and holding a sponge on the spot where people's luggage would hit the hard surface to prevent the luggage from being scratched. The OP added the flag of Japan to the video and asked "Isn’t there a correlation between the care taken with your luggage at airports and the care and manners in society (Japan)" The clip received millions of views, and people commented on how nice and considerate Japanese people are. I am aware that's just one out of many of Chinese video clips that have been deliberately mislabeled as Japanese video, as I've seen countless of good Douyin videos have been reposted as Japanese video clip. It's also not uncommon to see video from outside China that have been deliberately mislabeled as Chinese video when the content is offensive or unpleasant. I got konnichiwa and moshi moshi a lot from strangers too, that's kinda annoying.

LOL true. Korean people also get annoyed when people think they are Chinese. I've gotten some idiots come up to me and say nihao randomly so many times. In fact, many Americans think Asians are just Chinese as Fung bros said. The pandemic situation showed how ignorant people are in America. It also doesn't help that Chinese culture (while it has cultural depth) in general tends to be more rude (prob due to overpopulation and cultural behaviors) or less refined. I do believe bad Chinese tourist videos went viral multiple times even before the whole pandemic situation. I've experienced this too when a Chinese tourist pushed me out of the way to take a photo at a Korean heritage site. There was also a tour guide taking kids at a field trip in a Korean museum. The kids started touching old over century yr old artifacts and playing w them and Chinese tour guide did not even tell them to stop touching them which got everyone pissed. It's not that there aren't assholes of every group bc there are. It's just that people recognize these kinds of behavior within Chinese culture are more frequent and there are some mannerisms/behaviors that are very Chinese.

@@jasonsmart1 . I’m from the east too. I have also traveled to many countries in the east. I couldn’t tell the difference and neither could the people I met. A person’s guessing accuracy increases when the Asian person speaks or if they have “stereotypical” features from a certain Asian country. It’s understandable if people can’t guess accurately because a person’s facial feature is determined by environment and genetics. Asians, in general, have similar environments and genetic/genome. Take Japan for example, researchers has explained that it is estimated that modern Japanese share in average about 90% of their genome with Korean and Chinese. The other 10% is with the other. According to a research that was reported by the Washington Post A.I can only guess with a rate of 75% accuracy and when the scientists went to investigate how the computer was making its decisions, they discovered an interesting pattern. Many of the cues that stood out to the algorithm were cultural features, like hairstyles or glasses or facial expressions. This makes sense, since the people of China, Japan and Korea have somewhat shared ancestries, but distinct senses of fashion. My accuracy of guessing a person’s country of origin increases dramatically if I know what they eat and were and likes, but if we are strictly talking about facial features then the guessing accuracy would be extremely low. I don’t know if you are talking about your accuracy on guessing an Asian person’s facial features only or not, but as research has shown it is almost impossible.

There's a lot of sinophobia these days that's definitely true, but I think some of this if not a lot of it can be attributed to the weak soft power that China has versus Korea and Japan which have very strong soft power and as a result their cultural impact outside of East Asia is a lot larger than China's is currently. If you've seen an East Asian woman walking around with makeup similar to what someone saw in either a K or J drama or a K or J music video or viral video of course a person might associate them then with those countries if they don't see any makeup well they're not gonna automatically associate them with those countries and that kind of leaves one really really big country to associate that person with

Korean actors are attractive but don't count the Chinese out just because you've never seen them. Also, does it really matter what other people think? If you can't love and accept yourself and your ancestry, how can you expect other people to? These days, it's so much easier at school and work to correct people and say "You know, I am (say your ancestry) and not (what they think you are). Let me tell you about my culture..." Most people I know are generally open to discussion.

This is so strange as a Korean myself. Growing up, EVERYONE assumed I was Chinese and if I told them I was Korean, they would say North or South? Like Bruh. I still don't really believe the current state of affairs and it feels like a fever dream where the whitest people I know will have a huge tub of kimchi in their fridge and eat it more often than me. Idk what to make of it. Another component is definitely the Chinese government not getting out of its own way with respect to soft power. They spend 10's of billions of dollars to promote their culture to the world with things like Olympics, etc. but they're constantly in the news for unfavorable topics. Also, with the Chinese Firewall, people outside of China don't have real access to the Chinese people in a meaningful way by banning TikTok, KZbin, everything else, so we don't get as much exposure to the cool stuff they're doing unless it's been filtered through a 3rd party, where misinformation or mistakes are bound to happen so people may attribute the source as Korean or Chinese.

Western standards of beauty are: ..... Western=European, so the closer a person looks Western, the more beautiful a Westerner or anyone else who has been influenced by colonialism feels beautiful. @@WMPBLSD Incorrect. The East Asian beauty ideal is extremely rigid and basically defaults to an incredibly pale, incredibly thin, incredibly pretty face with very fine features. The American beauty ideal is far broader (though that did not used to be the case), and the country considers a much broader range of looks attractive. For example, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Cindy Crawford used to be considered the beauty ideals. Now? Rhianna is considered gorgeous, alongside folks like KPop stars and your standard blonde All-American models. Do we still have some fuckery going around with Eurocentric bias? Definitely, but that is absolutely fading after concerted efforts to break its hold on the culture.

I believe it's ignorance from lack of exposure that gives them that perception. The godmother I was closest to when I still lived in the Philippines was Chinese and very naturally beautiful. Her daughter was a former Miss Chinatown. Vivian Hsu, Taiwanese, isn't attractive? And Dilraba, who is Chinese, is very beautiful. Since she is Uyghur, she has naturally Caucasian features and is more beautiful than Koreans who undergo plastic surgery to improve or "correct" their looks (that also includes Japanese who undergo double eyelid surgery). I remember in the subway, my son thought this "perfect ' looking guy was Japanese. I looked at him and knew he was Chinese, so I told him the "perfect " looking guy was not Japanese.

Eh. I disagree. Koreans may do a lot of plastic surgery but they perfected East Asian beauties. Uyghurs are just uglier versions of Caucasians.

Truly one of the MOST ENTERTAINING and HILARIOUS videos in KZbin HISTORY.... the bros be dropping science from all angles too MUCH RESPECT! NOTE: The terms, "Boba" and "Boba Milk Tea" definitely Taiwanese...yes, Taiwan definitely added those syrupy little balls into their milk tea and the terms "Boba" and "Boba Milk Teas". But that cat DEFINITELY got influence with those syrupy balls from the age old filipino "Sago drinks" and more specifically Sago at Gulaman. Especially, when connecting the dots to huge influx of taiwanese tourism, land acquisition and business development in the Philippines during the 1980s.

China is a huge country with a huge demographic population. In that sense it’s like Russia. Russia produces some of the most talented athletes, scientists and most beautiful women. China is like the Russia of the Far East. Some of the most beautiful and diverse looking East Asian women are in China. Hands down. Anyone who thinks any different has just never spent time actually partying in modern day China. If you’re a fashion model scout, you’d be scouting for hot tall statuesque women with long limbs in China. Not Korea or Japan. Im sorry but yeah there are attractive women obviously in all these countries but statistically hands down China will have the most beautiful women by global beauty standards with the most genetically diverse East Asian feminine look and body. Just go look at the East Asian models in the west. Most will be Chinese.

Is this a generational thing, maybe? I might be older than your guys' core audience, but as an Asian who has dated (& married) asian women from different places than my country....I don't see Chinese as less attractive. At all. Distinct from Korean or Japanese? Sure. That's a good thing though. The whole continent, & world, is full of gorgeously diverse women. Lucky me ;-D

The problem is that people like you are projecting your own inferiority and unconsciously think that you are inferior to them. Don't blame others. Look within yourself to fix the problem. Chinese are kind of the Mexicans of Asia. Widely known, widely stereotyped, default trope that represents the larger swath of Latinos and Asians respectively. Also, the words themselves are also used as perjoratives, which is uncommon for other countries. I'm not here to offer solutions, just stating a fact.

Bro, I lived in China and part Chinese and am zero % offended, because it's true. A lot of women in mainland China barely wear any make up. Koreans wear so much damn make up THE MEN wear make up lol. Even when Chinese women do make up, it tends to a little less westernized than how Koreans do make up. Fashion wise, Koreans basically dress like straight up westerners while China and Japan kinda do their own thing. I don't think it implies Chinese women are uglier as ethnically there isn't a huge visual difference between Chinese and Korean, but it more a testament to makeup, fashion sense, and Korean women are definately more "thirst trappy" than Chinese women with more make up and more revealing clothing being more normalized over there.
