Please make sure you have a carbon monoxide and smoke alarm . The real test for smokey burner will be on a windy night with back drafts but stacks can catch a light or suddenly block if tar builds up so a detector is a must. The other problem you might encounter is not being able to shut the burner down properly if there are air gaps so you'll know soon enough if theres an issue. I lived in a removals truck too , it was many years ago but I still love the memories and had many cozy nights with the wood burner.

Don't forget folks to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Gas is just as deadly as a fire, best to be safe than sorry. As it winter, we don't have the windows and vents open as much. Stay safe x

I find the easiest way to join wires is with Heat shrink soldered joints. You basically just need either a heat gun or a gas torch. I've put together several 12v "systems" using these. Have a gander on Amazon or alternatively I've got loads of them here in various sizes 👍☺️

Say it is not so in selling Morgan. Morgan has such great structures. The concerns you have been working out and upgrading Morgan. I love watching your vegan choices and especially Lliam your cooking. I am not a vegan, as of yet, but seeing how the food is really a great healthy choice and pleasing for the palate you have made the choices even when eating out easier. Please consider doing a video for cooking only. Would love a cookbook from you. Those are just ideas.

You probably need to put a fuse between the big wire and the thinner one. The bigger wire is carrying more ampage than the thinner wire can carry.

Great vlog as always guys, I have a log burner in my converted Citroen Relay (Orion) it is the most wonderful of things, it turns your van into the most cosy of spaces and has a the light, noise and warmth that makes such a difference to those colder nights. you can also cook on it and roast your Christmas chestnuts too.

Probably to late for you Liam. Don’t use choc block connectors to repair the heater wires. They can melt as well. Use bullet connectors, they crimp using crimping pliers. The bullet connectors are current(amp) rated. Red 30 amp. Much better and safer than choc block connectors. Cut back cables to clean shiny copper, cut way all discoloured copper wires or they will encourage heat build up and burn out again.

Different wire sizes carry different currents. You need to ensure the current is that of the smaller wire gauge. If the current is that of the larger gauge wire in can cause the wire to melt. I'm glad you are both safe

Yeah the cable should really be one size but the problem will probably be a faulty connection in the wire it could be the vibrations in the van that caused it. Shouldn’t be just tape that looks like a crimped connection but it’s not clear from the video.

Them connectors you have got are a bit dated they don’t really offer good insulation if you’re using 2 different size cables get a box of wagos from screw fix and then fit them in a wago insulation box. It’s not a major problem to fix but could have been disastrous.

Liam you need that item fully rewired correctly.. I suspect the thin wire is not able to take the level of power going through it. The wire gets hot and causes things to melt and start fires.

It was exciting to see Morgan in Reality. Janine looked bemused and tired, Liam looked amused but relaxed when I leapt out of my van to say “hello”, I held up the traffic which was silly! After the supermarket exit I wondered if you were to park along the beach where my cousins live as I knew you did sometimes park there. On a lovely day we walked at Firles Beacon where they hadn’t been for a year but you weren’t there. A few days later, there you were again as well as when I walked fast the promenade before a night ferry and a long drive home. We never let our log burner go out in the winter, you can buy smokes less fuel from garages then turn your fire to tick over will keep you warm through out the night. What a fabulous video Janine and Liam! Your home is looking more homey every time I view it via your videos. It's SUPERB! That roast dinner looked so delicious I almost licked the screen on my new 75 inch TV which allows me to feel like I'm almost dining with you. Here in the U.S. a lot of RVers use a pizza stone on the floor of their gas ovens to enhance the heat efficiency of their ovens. Either on the floor of the oven or on the rack. Many swear by it. Liam is turning into quite the electrician isn't he? The new screen video projection unit is wonderful. The fireplace is wonderful too and makes your home glow like a cottage out of Dickens. The recommended distance from Chinese diesel heater to battery is only about 3ft I think, ( please check that you have 16 gauge wire on your loom), otherwise it needs upgraded wire if you have a longer run, say 10 ft then you should swap it out for 10 gauge wire

The problem with the two cables and the reason for arking getting hot intermittent contact get good solid block connector bare back and fully tighten down then you can seal with tape or solder joint it together Keep safe and traveling to have fun 😀

A small amount of knowledge is a dangerous thing in the electronics field. A thick wire connected to a thinner wire involving electrical tape should never have been installed like that. Torque settings & terminations are crucially important with the vibrations of a moving vehicle because “loose wires start fires” I dread to think the potential danger that lurks in some of these self builds 🙈💥🔥

We both love a roast both are southerners and like thick gravy mint sauce lovely .need warmth in winter weather you are in UK or aboard not only looks cosy feels cosy hope you get things sorted in the van we are in Latvia at the moment it's beautiful. and gets cold at night best place to be in bed nice and cosy last year we were in Lithuania. And Hungary at Christmas and Serbia that was very cold icicles hanging all round the van our water pipes froze so if you are going to Europe think about the cold it get really cold

I hate to burst your bubble about the lovely log burner, but please please please do a "particulate matter test" on that log burner. You may not see the smoke, but every single time you open that door to load more wood, you're exposing yourself to amazing amounts of particulate matter. V bad for your lungs if the levels are too high and in that type of burner in that small a space, you really really need to meter it first.

This has me craving a roast dinner with mint sauce 🥰 Showing my age now (80’s kid) but I remember my mum would always put some mint sauce from the jar, into a little bowl and then add sugar & vinegar… it was incredible! Hi guys, I’m not an electrician but if the thicker wire is coming from the heater and the thinner one is going to it then it seems to me that the thinner one is not capable of the current being drawn and therefore would get hot to the point of melting. I would suggest you have an electrician look at it. Stay safe.

This usually happens at dodgy wire joints. If there is a bad connection, there is increased resistance which, like a bulb filament, heats up. (This does not increase the current, so will not cause a fuse to blow). Because of the melting/burning of the insulating material, you get a familiar electrical burning smell as a warning. Also the wire should be thick enough with a suitable max current rating, and, yes, a thinner wire feeding a thicker wire suggests the thinner wire might be underrated. But in this case it was the join. The same for if a wire is damaged. The same problem can occur inside a printed circuit board.

Glad your both OK and this is why you should always have a qualified person to carry out electrical and gas work. As for condensation issues I remember asking when the van was being fitted out if you were fitting an extractor fan in the shower and was told ny Liam it was required likewise with a shower door not just a curtain. Maybe worth thinking about in the future 🤔

Another great video guys thank you. I’m sure some people on here think your kids ! The cables were joined using a through crimp then they would have used electricians tape. It’s not the best way to join cables that are different sizes. This happened due to loose connections. I have no doubt you would have joined them by now. The best way to check connections is to give them a little pull after you have connected them check the terminal is tight with your screw driver again. Take care and stay safe. To get the fire going more easily, fill an old soap sprayer bottle with paraffin. You can pre-squirt the wood and paper in the firebox before lighting it. Its the cheapest easiest quickest way of getting it going. It's lively enough but safe without the exploding gases of petrol which is very dangerous as a starter fuel, You can buy paraffin in 5L containers to top up your sprayer.

Dont butt join the wires. Use a large butt crimp bring the 2 wires together and crimp only one side. |The removes any poor connection or arcing across the wire joint which was possibly the cause of the heating and fire.

Your electrical problem looks typical of what happens when wet gets into a soldered joint (seen this on loads of cars where the wire runs in the footwells and the carpets have got wet). The moisture reacts with the corrosive flux residue from the solder causing the green corrosion then as the strands of wire slowly corrode away the remainder have to carry more current causing heat and melted insulation (modern wire will smoke and stink but shouldn't actually ignite). The fuse won't neccesarily blow as the current rating of the fuse wont have been exceeded, its just that by the time it failed the two or three remaining strands couldnt cope! if you cut right back to clean uncorroded wire and join it with a screw type connector it shouldn't cause any more issues. Is this the wire from the solar to the heater element? if it is it may be worth testing the current draw with a multimeter on a bright sunny day with a tank full of cold water just to be sure the wire is heavy enough.

Hi guys, A fat wire to thin wire is a BIG NO NO.. Big wire carries way no amps than the thin wire, AMPS creates heat and hence the fire.. Get a sparky to have a look at it. stay safe

Another nice visit . Quite a chapter from electric fire to fireside comfort. I share your joys as well as those frustrations. Do you have a fireball? It’s like a small soccer ball that explodes with its contents of fire suppression materials when contacted by too much heat or flame.

As an ex electrican and aircraft harness maker! i will try and explain the safety build into wires! the problem looks like the connection! was not quite making and causing an electrical arc inside the connector and building heat!.. and melting the connector.. clean both cable ends and connect using either a crimp or terminal block!.. find out what it feeds and when reconnected watch for heat.. you should have a fire as most insulation is designed to melt and put out the fire!..sometimes also designed to give off a smell when hot! resembles fishy smell, and why worry so much???? it's not like you have to run miles to escape! just open a door! a van can be replaced!.. log burner looks ace, and glad your both good.. safe travels

Thanks for the insight 👍 We worry about anything Melting, overheating, sparking etc, when we have cylinders of gas nearby, diesel heaters nearby etc. We just want it to be safe and sleep soundly in it, know what i mean?

Chances are reattaching those to wires will create another fire at some point. Think about the congestion at the end of the motorway. that thinner wire is carrying too much power. I hope that you get sorted and stay safe. Your food is making me hungry enjoy

Hey guys , don’t use the screw block connector as it will only come loose as you travel along , if it’s a thick gauge wire and they have been twisted together of course there gonna melt lol you need to get it soldered and use a heat shrink to insulate if your every in South Wales area and need a hand with auto electrics give me a shout 👍🏻

The fuse should blow before the wire burns, that is the whole point; fuses are installed to protect against this exact situation. Yes, definitely your wire is too thin. Check the current draw of the heater, size the wiring and fuse accordingly.

I have been sleeping in my truck for a couple of years now not full time but am gutting an renovating a house in a forest. On those nights with two dogs I sleep well :) Ok I have the truck 400,000+ km so the front seat fits me or I fit it 😂 One place in Germany that is not bad to park up is under the wind turbines there is a flat area under each one and the noise is relaxing (I find ) not seen one dead bird ever !!!! Duck trump Can’t wait until you guys are back in Germany if you want a good cup of English tea just come round…from this week we live in the house
