Are online multiplayer games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy 14, & Elder Scrolls Online. Are they a complete waste of time or is there a very good reason to play them?

I remember telling my sister who was worried about her son who was playing WOW too much. I said: "At least he isn't doing drugs or knocking up women out of wedlock and he's a better typist then I am."

I started playing EQ when I was in elementary school, and played throughout high school and sometimes in college. My mom used to tell me I was wasting my time sitting on my computer. I'm in my 30's now, and still play on an emulated server. Looking back, I can honestly say I don't regret sitting on my computer and playing EQ. It was never a waste of my time, because I enjoyed it. I met and befriended people from around the world, and some amazing humans I would have never even known existed. It even led me to your channel during the pandemic, and I enjoyed following along with your adventures. On the flip side I've had to take classes to get my masters that I think were a complete waste of my time, because I never used the information in my actual job after I graduated, it was just fulfilling an arbitrary requirement the school had. Or there are some meetings for work that I think are a complete waste of my time because I don't really need to be there. So it's all a bit of perspective when you think about it. But anyway, I loved my time on EQ and i'm glad that you're still making content that allows me to reflect on it.

This one hit hard. The comparison to porn was very apt, and maybe that says something about the utility/detrimental aspect of video games like MMOs, but at the same time, maybe that says something about society and it's current state.

Definitely society like you said. Doing stuff with friends was always more fun.

I hope everyone who actually struggles with addiction or loneliness works in fixing that and there’s help out there if you need it. Games are fun but all things in moderation! My best friend moved away in high school but we still played wow all the way until we graduated. I actually credit that with keeping our friendship alive and also keeping me from going down a bad path some other friends were falling into. It’s definitely not all negative as long as you have a good balance, but I do think if that’s difficult for you then it’s probably best to just quit these kinds of games for good

Been watching your vids for years, never commented before but just wanted to say keep it up. Your script writing has come a long way and your effort shows. Always glad to see an EQ homie doing well. Glad to see you releasing content again. 👍

Lost my job, fiance, etc because of Everquest. But I did manage to lead my guild to be one of the best on the server back during Velious. Looking back, I would've never spent that much time on gaming if I knew what all I'd miss out on in rl

I just realized a lot of things with this video. This was deep, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. I relate so much to all these issues, I got the same arguments with family members and wife, i also sneaked at night to go play EQ at times, I also promised to stop. Then I also started again...man this video...I did not lose my job but did stop going to school when I was younger. Now I got two jobs and still play games I play New World now and love it.

Also would like to add, in game if a friend screws ya over or anyone in general, mean to you etc. It's not that big of a deal as it is in real life, not as devastating, so in a way safer... Yeah, it's better to have friend's in real life, but some people just don't due to all kinds of reasons, I have friends in games I don't play anymore that I still talk to occasionally more so then in real life...

I’ve been super depressed lately. The person I wanted to marry left my life without closure. I find myself between 2 places. Drinking a lot or gaming a lot. Both are hindering my life.

The better my EQ character got the worst my real life got. I have often bragged in game to other players that my family held an intervention for me because I was so addicted to EQ and neglected the real world. 😂

I think that everyone should do things in moderation however i do think that mmo's are a healthy way to spend your free time. It just isn't healthy when you can't balance it with your responsibilities

I've played FF14 for years now on and off I can't say it's addicting to the point of neglect 😅 It doesn't have many time sinks either. WoW was definitely the one back in the day I was really into, which is funny because it's the one I got the least far into, I always kept making new characters over and over. I mostly watched my big brother play WoW from tbc to wrath. Those were some good times.

As someone who's played videogames for the past 42 years, they are ALL a complete waste of time. Doesn't mean I don't still like playing them though. Past generations didn't watch TV or listen to the radio for anywhere near the amount of time that the average gamer puts into games.
@IonBlaze1

Hmmm that is a good retort. TV & radio weren't as big when there was friends. That's true

That was the reason why to some extend WoW sucked for mature players. Everquest required brains and people able to communicate via text chat hence needed at least a teenager with some english knowledge. in WoW a 6 year Kid could be your main tank as long as he could figure out to press the right attack combos. Which really turned out to be WoW's worst downside and why they never got a good community .. cause the players was generally mostly Kids or very unmature people. EQ required you had some social skills or you would just be shunned out very fast, In WoW 90% of the players had zero social skills. Plus that WoW was more geared towards PvP and PvP tournaments which was never a focus in EQ, so the player base is very different from each other and hence why the general mostly mature player comming from EQ's PVE servers, myself included, really strugled with the often poisonous tone in WoW. Today this poisonous tone has entered EQ too cause of Krono farmers and Daybreak refusing to policing their own rules against people breaking the EULA
