I bought the 203 the day it came out. Peeps thought I was crazy to pay that much. Crazy like a fox. The analog outs were perfect for my Integra,upgraded it immediately. Best thing I ever bought and still using it. Wound up being the flagship for a 30,000 ht system. There are clones out there, just gos to show how amazing this player was and is still being copied

I picked up my UDP203 for about $1000 secondhand during the pandemic. I was lucky. The previous owner never updated it, so it still had the original firmware it shipped with. I updated it, and have since modified it with all sorts of upgrades (mainly to power delivery, power supply, and a chip that makes it universal). As far as I’m concerned, whoever wants to take it from me can pry it from my cold dead hands…

I just purchased an old school Oppo bdp 83 for analog audio purposes. I purchased solely based on the outstanding reviews this machine garnered when released in '09 and the fact that it plays so many sources like SACD, HDCD, DVD-A and the like. While I'm impressed with the audio quality of this unit nothing prepared me for incredible video and audio coming out of my DVD's and Blu-rays. I just watched the opening action sequence in 007's Casino Royale and it totally blew me away. I'm looking forward to many years of good use out of this beast.

I too used my OPPO for SACD. Sounded good. But then bought a dedicated CD/SACD player, a yamaha . The difference in sound for SACD was nothing short of amazing. Of course that's a 1200 dollar player. But I have about 70 SACDs so it's worth it to me.

Hi Hatoraid Cowboy ~ Obviously, you only know me from a cryptic YT user name, but I can tell you what I was told by a guy in the UK who's a name in the audio engineering game. He told me that he knows someone in the know who worked for Oppo back in their heyday. At some point, a certain huge international electronics entity was pushing Oppo around in an attempt to stop them from offering certain functions/capabilities in their universal player line. Well, obviously, Oppo never offered a universal player minus format functions found in their previous players, which clearly tells us that Oppo preferred changing their business model over diminishing their universal player line. In short, they never "caved" to the big guys: and God bless them for that! That's why we own - and hold onto - two Oppo universal players! Keep spreading the good word! 👍

Got a 103D back in the BluRay days, region free of course. Never had to worry about any of that crap! Then, moved on to my 203 I got when travelling to LA for work. Here in Sweden they used to cost 50% more than in the US! Sales taxes are higher, but the rest was just OPPO EU and pure greed. Also region free and still going strong when I watch the occasional disc. Never getting rid of those players! The 103 can be used to rip SACD to a NAS if needed. Super-niche, but a nice to have.

Lack of streaming apps had nothing to do with why Oppo stopped making the 203 and 205 models. Both were profitable, but their phone business was even MORE profitable so they pulled the plug on the players. I have both, and the 205 was never going to sell vast quantities as it's an audiophile niche product for a variety of format types using analogue audio (e.g. "normies" don't play SACDs, DVD-A, and the like).

- 👍that is exactly the reason. Hugh profit margins on a phone and very little on a low volume, premium end player. You only have to look at the new brands that have tried to come in and replace Oppo - they're charging two to three times as much - and they'll be out of business even quicker. I suprised Sony hasent tried to fill the void with a high end ES model - at least they can obsorb the low volume against a cheaper player for people who come on here expecting a player for $50🤣 I guess thats Panasonics job, cheap players all the way up to premium?

@IncognitoChild
@IncognitoChild 4 ай бұрын
@@antiWhiteism777 wow, there are some tough questions there 😁. Starting with Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray. First of all, make a list of the content you plan to play on the machine. ie DVD, Blu-ray, SACD, 4K Blu-ray, USB file formats and prioritise your list accordingly. If you are using a screen greater or equal to 65 inch with an extensive and large film collection consisting of DVD and Blu-ray that you are only going to add new 4k titles to, rather than replace , the best upscaling 4K players are Panasonic. If you are looking to replace your existing DVD and Blu-ray collection with 4K blu-rays and the highest picture quality with Dolby Vision is a priority then you need to look at Oppo . If you are looking for a universal disc player which can play back SACD you can ignore Panasonic because they don't offer SACD playback capability. This leaves you again with OPPO or Sony. If you are on a tight budget and you want to play all discs, the Sony might be the best option for you, but naturally it isn't going to be the best at anything, but it is a solid performer with a couple of annoying features, one being : manual switching of Dolby Vision (which to some people, is an absolute pain in the arse) Blu-ray players are naturally much cheaper than 4k but at the end of the day you might as well future proof as best you can and buy a machine that can play all known discs currently now. Prices vary dramatically depending on what region of the world you're in if you're in the UK for example you'll need to shop around and see if you can find any deals. Overall recommended retail prices are certainly better in the United States. VHS: I'm afraid I have no experience of D-VHS. I remember seeing models by Panasonic, Philips andJVC but again depending on what region of the world you're in your experience might be different. I think you could play standard VHS tapes in standard and SVHS through these machines. SVHS with Hi-Fi sound again I would stick to JVC and Panasonic. I preferred Panasonic and one of the last decent machines was an NV-HS950 but I also loved the NV-FS100 as well.

I have an Oppo-203 and a Panny UB9000. In terms of pure video quality, especially with HDR10 discs, the UB9000, with its HDR Optimizer edges the OPPO out by a smidge. Dolby Vision is pretty much even. The OPPO does have a sleeker interface than the Panny and a better self-lighting remote. Even though the Panny has some streaming apps, they are easily outclassed by any Roku, Firestick or Nvidia Shield. The one gigantic advantage that the OPPO has over the Panny is its ability to play almost any combination of video and audio encoding (including lossless) in MKV and MP4 files. It's also better with BDMVs. The Panny is very limited in this area and can't even play E-AC3 tracks. It's one reason that I'll never get rid of my OPPO. There has been one issue with my OPPO however. My setup has been Denon AVRs and an LG C7 OLED TV. Prior to my getting the latest Denon X3800 AVR, my OPPO had problems with HDMI handshaking when playing Dolby Vision discs. The LG would go to its "No Signal" screen briefly or sometimes longer I tried every combination of video settings without success . There were no problems with HDR10 discs. The Panny had no problems here. OPPO blamed Denon, Denon blamed LG but nobody could come up with an answer. It was one reason why the UB9000 became my primary disc player and the OPPO was used mostly with a USB external hard drive. Since I got the Denon X3800 the DV/ handshake problems have subsided quite a bit although they still crop up from time to time. I still use the UB9000 as the primary disc spinner but I also use the OPPO as well and, again, I ain't never giving up my OPPO unless it goes completely toes up one day and OPPO is no longer providing service.

This is the first time I seen your channel. Pretty good. Oppo is not the only company that stop selling. Samsung and I think LG has stop. I think people like streaming because it is easy to get to not caring about the quality. I remember when I was in grad school was to make things more affordable and convince people their product is better. I was alive when they had vcrs and they tried to convince people that betamax even though it was better than vhs was beaten because it was more expensive. Beta was clearly better. Another is HD DVD and Blu-Ray. I had both and clearly HD had the better picture but because blu-ray was cheaper it won the format wars. 4K is going through the same thing and so is streaming. Physical media is superior than streaming but try to convince people that. Look at business history and you will see the same thing. It is how cheap and how conveince it is. I have a lot of movies I bought and looked at them later on streaming and you can hear and see the difference. I watched Justice League on streaming and my blu-ray was better than the 4K streaming.

I bought an Oppo 203 and still have it. I use it through my Yamaha home theater receiver. I do not plan to let it go and in fact told my wife [she was mad I bought it] that if I pass away either keep it in the family or sell it at a higher cost than I paid for it. As an owner of some 2 channel Cambridge Audio equipment, I believe oppo made their Blu Ray players. At the same time Oppo stopped making Blu-ray players so did Cambridge.

It is probably simply the case that sales of Blu-ray players have generally fallen because of all the streaming. Then we have the problem of Blu-ray manufacturers writing 4K but not playing UHD blu-ray. which some consumers have probably discovered. Then Is the problem perhaps that stores have both regular blu-ray players and UHD BD players on the same shelf in the store without making a separation between the two types of devices in the store. Then the question is whether it was so smart to name it UHD Blu-ray. it is perhaps should have been named 4K disk player or something better. Then there is the question of whether everyone knows that there is 4K on blu-ray discs. and that these can Better image than streaming. and why didn't 4K on Blu-ray get support for 3D in the standard was it so that the theaters would have some advantage maybe

I've been playing with my 'new' 203. It's very fussy with usb drives - it won't recognize a 2TB SSD formatted exfat. A 32G thumb drive (exfat again) used to work then didn't (not recognized/ detected) until a couple of reboots. Output also seems to be related to the screen - some files give a black picture when I connect a 1080p monitor, but when I tested again with a 4k monitor, they work. It's odd, because the files are 1080 files, not 4k files. Is it something to do with the settings? Also it detects a new firmware available but will often get stuck when I choose not to update, then I need a hard power off (power button doesn't work, I need to unplug). Are these known quirks or is my machine a bit duff?

@@hatoraidcowboy I bought it from a private seller. Firmware wasn't up to date so I bit the bullet and updated it. USB drives seem to work fine now, including the 2TB SSD. I also did a full factory reset as recommended. Then I got a message that there was another new firmware. I thought 'weird, didn't I just update to the latest'. I checked and I was on v45, which is very old, and oddly I thought was older than the one on the machine when I got it (though I can't be sure). Anyway, so I upgraded to V65. And touch wood, usb is workign still. The other thing was that it could connect to my synology NAS and could only see the contents of the shared video folder but not the music, nor photos. I think it was due to an indexing issue, and now I'm begining to see the music and photo folders being populated.

Residual problem is that 2160 files won't play on a lapdock with a 1080 monitor (sound but black picture), but will play ok on a 2k monitor. The demo bluray disc plays ok on the 1080 though. Weird. Maybe its just a problem with my 1080.

My 205bd is the best audio "value" I have ever purchased! I cannot believe the quality I get. ALL I use it for is playing "Redbook" CD's and the occasional Music related DVD such as a band's recorded live performance. However, the performance I get listening to a 3000 Cd disc (and growing) collection fed into a Violecric V281 headphone amp is quite frankly, a cheap (pardon...IMHO "killer inexpensive) high end "audiophile" experience as MUCH of the electric blues stuff I like to listen to is, quite frankly, unavailable on MANY quality streaming services! I bought a refurbished 203 in early 2019 and it's still going strong. Sucks that they stopped making players and also stopped updating the firmware because the 203 has a nasty, easy to repeat bug that was never fixed. For most users it might not matter if you only use physical media, but especially when using files with the USB, any time you switch from one audio format to another, sound will no longer play until you actually power cycle the player. So say you are listening to something with "MLP" then want to jump to DTS or just Dolby Digital...nope. Hell, even the Oppo clones out there copied it so much that they even copied that flaw along with it. Also, I used to pronounce "Oppo" the way it's being done in this video. It makes more sense and sounds better to me, but it's actually supposed to be "Oh-Poe".

I choose a physical Blu ray disc over streaming any day. I don't disagree that streaming is en vogue right now, but the pandemic is over and the reality is, my Oppo BDP93 player (yes it's that old) runs circles around my streaming apps. My Oppo was manufactured before the copy protection law, so it plays my collection of personal backup movies without blocking or scrambling. Also, no buffering issues from unstable wi-fi, AND DTS Master, DDS & Atmos movies sound awesome through my system. Some streaming sites still do not offer Atmos, and some streaming services are charging extra for those audio and video enhancements through their subscription rates. I have a lot of HDCD CDs. The Oppo is the only one player that can play them taking advantage of the increased resolution. There was not a simple way to rip HDCDs decoding the added information, so the oppo is my go-to everything audiophile content. The only problem with streaming is that you do not know when the platform will remove the films you are looking for, or even find that rare classic that you can find on DVDs or even Blu-Ray. You do not own anything with streaming, so you do not have control over content. I prefer to have my big collection. But the streaming future is inevitable, so I am preparing for it. I will even buy another Oppo (good prices at this moment) in case my first Oppo cannot be repaired.

@@hatoraidcowboy It's awesome. $19.99 a mont, 3 out at a time, no max limits, mailed directly to your home, mailed back. Guess I'll get a router, wire up an ethernet connection to the UDP-205. Time to start using the 1Gig service that I am lucky to have. Just never liked the idea of streaming, even in 4k. Not made of money, buying Ultra 4K Blu-ray's, little steep for me.

Bad timing of market and lack of profits is why I think Oppo left. in 2017. I was able to get my first 4K player for $45 from LG at Walmart while Oppo 203 was selling for $500. Samsung still was making their players, Panasonic was making as well as Sony. Lots of competition as the market was drying up and shift to streaming without a lot of 4K disc availability. Now 5 years later the 4K disc availability is there with an avid fan base but not much in the player market. Samsung left as well. Sony discontinued their top tier. LG, Panasonic, and Sony haven't upgraded their models in years. Reavon and Magnetar are trying, but each have drawbacks. I don't know if volume is there to make it worth Oppo's time to return, but if they did in the Reavon/Magnetar pricing those two brands would most likely go under. My Reavon can handle almost as much as a Oppo can, but external media browser is irritating slow to the point I bought a separate media player. Disc playback though is incredible.

I've got the oppo 203 and the problem with that and it's a major problem. When you're watching 4K there's not a movie mould the best that you've got is standard. And with movie mode that is the most accurate picture you're going to get. So I'm very surprised that oppo didn't let you get this feature when playing 4k

Oppo just didn't have an interest in making the players anymore. Their main business was and is phones, sold primarily in China. Half the population in China is 16-59. Quite the large demographic to sell phones. They are now also growing their mobile phone sales outside of China.

Still makes no sense to me. They had a hardcore cult following because their players were THE BEST on the market. I dont think they marketed them properly. If you’re not a hardcore enthusiast then you probably didnt know existed.

I believe was around the progressing decline in sales for preorder and the cost of production and that fact that UHD 4K was also probably the last disc format for a long time with little reason to progress and make another version 3 years later. The company I believe was located in California for the OPPO digital operations in which I'm sure overhead was high for promoting the player and the headphones and amplifiers was not going to grow market share in the coming years. It appeared pretty early on they had hit the top of the production costs of the player when the streaming app support was off the table because of licensing costs associated plus firmware support for fixing the app but was said because they wanted a pure disc player to cover the reasoning.
@hatoraidcowboy
@hatoraidcowboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tidbitkid Yea seems like a weird decision. One the one hand app support would drive up the cost to license said apps, but on the other hand these companies are all in cahoots so the partnerships go hand in hand. Seems like some kind of brand deal could have been made to offset production and licensing costs.

Yup. Me too. I bought mine on preorder for $500-600? Still a solid player. I just looked and looks like the most they are selling for on Amazon is $1700. Which is more than the 205 when it was released. Oh and thanks for watching!

Who's with me here on this thought? Physical media players are making a comeback because people are realizing streaming both video and especially audio sucks in comparison. I would billion times more rather listen to true disc Atmos (or audio in general) then crappy streaming Atmos. Here's hoping Oppo pulls a "Technics" and make a return from the dead in the coming years. After 5 years dormant, Panasonic recognized that the world is now open to better sounding music... So maybe Oppo will too!!
