When the war in Ukraine began, support packages enjoyed near universal bipartisan support in the House and Senate. However that sentiment has waned over time, particularly among Republicans. So why is this? And will this consensus survive the midterms?

On the other hand the more Russians die without having to use American soldiers, the stronger the US becomes compared to Russia. There are arguments for and against supporting a bloody slog war. Sadly the ones who will suffer the most are the Ukrainian civilians.

The war in Ukraine will finish in a way or another in 2023. Either Ukraine will collapse or Russia will collapse. In first case the cause of the end will be military, in the second case Russia will suffer an economic collapse.

Dems do it too, just look at Fetterman in the Pen Senate race who is now suddenly for fracking with a proven history of the opposite. You fail to realize that this is not Rep or Dem issue rather it is the political game that both sides use (lies and hypocritical) to get into office. To marginalize one party as a bad actor is kindergarten thinking. In reality we as Americans elect folks for wonky look out at their own self interests and not the peoples. Being divided between republican and democratic in the fractured way this country is running will be our downfall. We must be united and to compromise with each other. Additionally so many people don’t utilize their voice we need all citizens to vote

As an American, I don’t think that the US is obligated to protect Ukraine, but I definitely think we should. Ukraine is fighting what can only really be described as a righteous war for their country. They are fighting in defense of their country against an unprovoked invasion from an autocratic imperialistic power that has been slaughtering Ukrainian civilians. To not lend aid to Ukraine would be akin to approving of Russia’s actions.
@Jai_hind

Hey ! Let's correct some facts Ukrainian fight is justified and i support their territorial integrity but it wasn't unprovoked as Ukraine acted as buffer between NATO and Russia 🇷🇺 but Ukrain decided to join NATO( Tricked by US) and according to BBC before the war there was Neo - facist , corrupt and racist people who attacked Russian minorities but of course the government is not Nazi Germany type like Putin says . I am saying this because my cousin studied there in a medical College and faced racism .
@GusCraft460
@GusCraft460 Жыл бұрын
@@Jai_hind no, Russia started invading Ukraine years before Ukraine thought about joining NATO when Russia invaded Crimea. Ukraine chose to seek to join NATO because it wanted protection from Russian aggression. Ukraine isn’t Russia’s emotional support state. Ukraine is free to seek NATO membership if it wants. Russia shouldn’t have a say in that. The fact remains that Russia attacked Ukraine without being attacked first. That is the definition of an unprovoked attack. Whatever alliances Ukraine seeks to involve itself in are none of Russia’s concern, and it certainly isn’t enough to justify a first strike.

That is also why not one cent was sent as part of lend lease act, which has been active since may 9th This war could have ended very quickly if the president was to send existing US military equipment instead of having it produced by said contracts For reference, Ukraine armed forces stopped and reversed the advancement of russian army with only 16 himars systems. US has over 1000 such systems in storage, yet they opt to produce new ones for Ukraine. I wonder why?

Aid to Ukraine is in no danger. I think many people outside the USA don’t understand how things are working here. It would take me way to long trying to explain it here, but the public support is like 72% and even if one or the other chamber would try to say no it would be overwritten by the other or at worst case vetoed by the current president. There is also the lend lease act which just started and has been voted on and signed into law. It’s up to the president and the Secretary of State to approve or deny of what to send into Ukraine. So the material support for Ukraine basically has a blank check as is or what the president deems necessary.

Only 53% of americnas support fully ukriane that is untill the russian get kicked out of their new territory which is just laughfable to think about. People really think they have a chance by seeing what the media presents them and not the reality of the situation. Like the kharkiv offencive which wasnt in any way a battle but just overwhelming the russian who didnt even atempt to fight with nothing but numbers and at the same time losing many in the process despite the enourmass numerical advantege. I still dont get why people use this as some sort of example that ukraine will somehow win or that the russians are weak. Losing hundreds of men while nit inflicting any damage on the enemy is not a win in any way shape or form no matter how you put it ,,but they gained land" and ? It can be easily be lost. When all this loss of life,money, time and effort becomes the reality people will be extremely lost and wont know who to trust or what to do.

You are completely wrong about the "one chamber or the other" assertion. If either chamber decides that "enough is enough", US aid will largely stop. i can understand where both sides are coming from. one hand the US is struggling with a crime and drug crisis that's turning the sides of many people who were firmly democrat because of how horrible the situations have become, and with the hurricanes and storms that destroyed a good chunk of Florida and overall the nation still economically recovering from the pandemic and the billions we've sent to Ukraine could have helped with, also the fall of Afghanistan and the billions wasted over 20 years is still fresh on peoples mind. But on the other Putin has made up his mind to plunge the world into another war. it wont stop at Ukraine. its like Hitler promising he wont invade Czechoslovakia if he's given some of it and he just invades anyway. If Ukraine doesn't receive help they eventually fall and if a ceasefire is made the Russians will defiantly attack again and say its Ukraine, they needs the HIMARS, Javelins and other equipment that's making it possible for not only for Ukraine to defend itself but push the Russians back to the border. In my opinion its better we supply Ukraine with the equipment they need and it might take another year or 2 but im confident that with combination of sanctions and the overall disaray that Russia is in. that Ukraine will win the war and Russia will not be able to conduct any type of warfare for many years.

I can see why the arms industry would want a marginal reduction, if my top of head, pluck from thin air assumptions are correct, that a little less per year over more years would equate to a great total. Also, the longer it's dragged out, the greater the likelihood that Russia becomes a failed state (which could be disastrous, globally), rather than simply ending a regime and severely hobbling a major global power (the fates of both, probably already cemented).

Excellent comment. Also, as much as I dislike Putin, we shouldn't root for Russia's collapse. If Russia did collapse 1917 style, China would likely look to grab some land. It does have border disputes with Russia. That's land I'd rather have in the hands of an increasingly impotent authoritarian country than the world's most powerful totalitarian state.

I'm conflicted. I do believe the US needs to focus more on itself. Especially with the economy going the way it is. But I don't want to abandon Ukraine. They deserve our support and we should stand up for nations to live independent and free.

I don't think that the 2 goals conflict. A lot of equipment and ammunition is being used in Ukraine, and replacing it is going to generate a lot of work for various defence companies all over the world, and a lot of that work is going to end up being done in the US. High skill, high pay jobs are always good for an economy. Also, don't be fooled by the nominal dollar values attatched to some of the aid packages that have been announced, the ACTUAL cost to the US is often far lower then the headline figure

The amount of aid already given us enough to for Ukraine to win BUT it will take longer if no additional aid is given. If we want a swift solution we need to keep giving Ukraine aid. Then we need to help Ukraine rebuild after the war and assist Zelinski in passing the reforms needed to join NATO and the EU after the war. Also, Ukraine is the breadbasket of Europe and good relations are gonna be even more necessary as climate change hits agriculture world wide.

The portrayal of the progressive letter is a bit disingenuous as they wrote in support of Ukraine maintaining its territorial integrity while asking Biden to keep diplomatic efforts up so the conflict doesnt a) escalate and b) waste more lives than is absolutely necessary for Ukraine to keep its territory.

And it got walked back within 24hrs because the progressive leading the charge said her aids did it all behind her back which is just BS. The real truth is the anti war movement is nothing next to the shiny new office and committee. seats. That progressives and conservatives that don't tow the party line, get attacked so forcefully just means warhawks are scared the American people don't care about Ukraine. Gas prices, soaring crime, wide open borders, election integrity, abortion. The list is long but Ukraine for the average Joe may as well not exist and in a few years who knows. Imagine spending several hundred billion dollars on another failed war halfway around the world in a country people barely know exists until five minutes ago.

@@noboliNo That attitude worked out well in 1939, didn't it? ;) It is also worth considering that it doesn't serve the USA's interests to have NATO members suffering and otherwise occupied, and most of them are in Europe. Not to mention things like international trade. Also: the military industrial complex in the USA will continue to lobby for support for Ukraine. There's only so many AR-15s you can sell to the domestic US market. That isn't going away any time soon.

I'm not a Republican but I don't agree with the Democratic numbers here , most people don't agree that we should defend Ukraine, we agree that giving some money and guns is ok but that's not the same as defending there country. I don't think anyone would be ok with us sending American troops to Ukraine. I want Ukraine to win but we do need to know where that money is going and it should be documented considering they are suing not to pay student loan debt

America makes a ton of money selling weapons for every war. For the republicans, its always about money, so if enough of their friends are profiting from the war, they'll keep sending aid. As someone who pays taxes is the US but can't vote (foreigner) I personally don't think it's America's responsability to protect Ukraine, but it woudn't be smart to have a precendent where Russia does whatever it wants either. Most of my taxes already goes for military spending, let them use it for something good for once.
