S1GM4 Yes, when I got a raise I decided to treat myself by replacing the little paper clips that were holding up the headliner in my '88 Volvo with some large paper clips. I feared being too ostentatious, and did receive a few "must be nice," or "lucky" comments, but I just assumed those people were envious.

I think the central reason behind the theory "rich people are mean" boils down to classism. People with more materials, resources and privileges don't need to be kind to just anyone, and can choose to dismiss people who are of a lower class than themselves as irrelevant and unimportant because they don't rely on them or strive to live like them. They have more opportunities, and they don't want to lose their power. In my experience, really wealthy people aren't outwardly mean, but if you get to know them a little more they pretty much are snobs, rude and inconsiderate. They dehumanize and dismiss those who are below them on the social class hierarchy. They only want to associate with others who have similar bank accounts as their own. They don't want increases in taxes, and when they "give back" they do so to make a show of their good character, not because they always treat others in egalitarian or considerate manners. Yet, they somehow make sure to keep their own kids from interacting with middle class kids who have single parents or attend public schools. Not all really wealthy people are the same in character, obviously. But in general, they are greedy, classist, uncaring and stick with their own kind.

In my experience it’s quite opposite. I work with them daily and noticed that the ones who born wealthy are a lot nicer, educated and polite than the ones who became rich later in life. They are different people, usually they don’t want to know nothing about people who don’t matter for them and that’s totally normal. They respect their privacy, very suspicious which is also totally normal. Overall like I said they are nicer.

When I asked her why (I was young at the time,) she told me that wealth isn't how much money you have or how mamy things you own. It's what you do for others. Being kind to others makes you rich in ways money can't buy.

Of course, there's already 3,364 comments, so no one will ever read this. But I find it odd how you can publish a video proving rich people to be jerks, and also publish a video on how good looking people are only perceived as jerks. Now of course I have no scientific backing to prove my point, so I could be wrong. But I think that the reason rich people are perceived as jerks is similar to your are good looking people jerks video. We ignore rude, poor people, and we focus more on people that are rich. There are nice rich people and there are rude rich people, but rude rich people stick out more in our mind because of a subconscious envy. Especially in regards to wealth, having money puts a target on your back, because people who are less wealthy than you automatically assume you are a selfish person without even bothering to try and see past the "wealth hatred" filter. There also tends to be a difference in philosophies or values between rich and poor people. Poor people tend to focus more on enjoying the present or following their passion, whereas rich people tend to focus more on preparing for the future. This difference in values causes a ton of misunderstanding, causing dislike or even bullying. Your point is validated in the "The Perfect Gooseys", where a janitor's kid is mercilessly bullied by rich kids, but keep in mind the same thing can happen to a smart kid who works to be successful in school but gets bullied by people that aren't working in school. I can attest to this first hand- I was bullied in school by people that hated me for being smart. One girl used to step on the back of my shoes in the hallway and throw books at me. Another group of people wouldn't let me play kickball with them, saying, "Sorry- we don't let nerds play." Some of those kids didn't make it to college, while I'm now in one of the top engineering programs in the nation. Now that I'm more successful than them, and because I will likely be wealthier than them in the future, does that make me the jerk? Who you view as mean depends on your perspective. Since engineers end up with a salary that puts then in the top 10-20% of the nation's wealth, that means the other 80-90% of people are poorer than that person and more likely to view them as a jerk. I'm not saying I've never run into rude rich people. But overall in my life, the people who have been the meanest to me have been the people that had less success than me and hated me for it. If you have different values and a different perception of the world, it can be really hard to get along. But understanding that different in philosophy and why rich and poor people do what they do is the first step to getting along better.

I think it's a little more complex than that. Money equates to power and lavishness. When people feel like they can buy whatever they want, they start to feel elite and special. Also, wealthy people tend to hold positions of power. And their power causes a change in how their brain works that makes them crave more, thus putting down others who wouldn't advance that in some way. On the other hand, attractive people in some cases are more used to attracting lots of positive attention and having people crawl all over them and they let that get to their heads. In short, wealthy jerks are that way because of elitism and power Attractive jerks are that way because of narcissism and expecting constant love and attention

VilivanChto “You” are an illusion. Your brain is a computer that processes data and makes decisions without your consent. The idea of the self is a false image created by the flow of thoughts and memories. “You” aren’t real. And that thought may make you want to recoil and shout “No, I’m real, I’m me, I feel things therefore I’m real” which is partially true. Your perception is real. You do perceive and feel things and that cannot be denied. But those feelings are, again, fabrications by the super computer of your mind to compel you to carry out survival instincts. “Hunger” is just a way for the body to compel you to eat. “Love” is just a way for the body to compel you to breed. “Fear” is just a way for the body to keep you safe. We believe that our idea of self is in control over our bodies when in reality our bodies are in control of the self. Granted, knowing this changes nothing. Your brain will intentionally repress this idea as hard as it can because knowing that you are just a lump of organic cells compelled by electric impulses to carry out various functions against your will leads ultimately to suicide as the only logical conclusion. Essentially, you are a puppet who can see the strings but even a puppet who can see his strings is still a puppet.

0:30 This behavior may be more strongly correlated with horsepower than price. The faster a car feels, the more the driver feels like they are being held back by the cars in front. Obviously more horsepower usually means higher price, but not all the time. So I'd like to see a comparison of the correlation. I'll bet the correlation will be stronger with horsepower than with price.

There are plenty of cars with decent horsepower on the cheap, yet the assholes tend to flavor luxury brands for some reason. Take a look here: www.independent.co.uk/life-style/bmw-owners-drivers-inconsiderate-worst-road-survey-a8151111.html Is the same story pretty much everywhere, if horsepower were the root of the problem, you would expect the worst offenders to include more brands focusing more in sport cars than luxury ones.

I read some threads on reddit about rich people opinions most of them had said they had to ignore to help others or move away or just hide from others because it'd drive common people on the lower standards to be more dependent on them. Most of the parasites came from their own family asking around for free stuffs. Like constantly, if they're not helping then they'd blackmail or cut the family ties or whatever. I feel this video sends the wrong message. You mention that as you become more powerful (or rich) you lose empathy and “become more self centered”. While that may be true, it’s not because they suddenly loathe or feel better than others. But rather that when you become a leader, you are asked to care for a large number of people, objects, money, etc. and are forced to make decisions that may hurt an individual for the benefit of the whole. That’s why on average, less emotional, or detached personalities tend to be more successful leaders (and generally more liked and well respected too). Because they value the whole more than individuals. It’s not out of disrespect, but out of necessity to protect what is (or is perceived to be) the greater good. That’s why I feel it’s unfair to portray rich people as selfish or blind to other’s emotions. Obviously, there are rich people that are just jerks, but in most cases I would argue that there’s a bigger picture that often gets ignored in this discussion. Instead of focusing solely on the “what’s”, let’s also inquire the “why’s”

Personally, I see a paradox with these videos, at least in its implications. You can clearly tell from their point of view that this is directed not just against the “richer” people, but the conservatively rich people such as bankers, etc. But in my life, most of the rich people with a strong conservative principle are what you would actually expect, reliable, hard-working, charitable. It’s the ideal conservative rich. However, there’s a problem for all these “new riches” who do not work for their money, or get lucky on a single product or something. They’re living in the mindset of a person aspiring for some kind of social justice, or even some guilt. So they bring it out on other people by being rude and whatnot.

Prosthetic Quilt I think the video is confusing people who worked to be rich and people who were born rich And even then I it really just depends in how you were raised. @emilygee6618
@emilygee6618 6 жыл бұрын
Same here! And I totally agree with you about how it depends on how you're raised! I'd say that if you were born into wealth you might have a higher chance of feeling entitled and could be kinda cocky, but as long as your parents raise you correctly you'd be just fine! But even then people that grow up in poverty can feel really entitled too! They see richer people and get mad because they think they deserve it more. So it really all just depends on how your parents teach you :\
@LilChuunosuke
@LilChuunosuke 6 жыл бұрын
It's not a guarantee. I've personally met some super nice rich people. But my parents are rich and at a glance, especially my father, look like the sweetest people in the world. But behind closed doors, they were jacking up their paychecks regularly while devoted employees who worked for them for decades were literally going to soup kitchens and living with their elderly parents. Behind closed doors, they were abusing their own daughter and neglecting her basic needs such as fitting clothing, a right to privacy, etc. Sometimes rich people are genuinely nice. Sometimes they're horrible. Sometimes they appear nice, but it's only a mask for the public. Sometimes they appear horrible, but they just make a horrible first impression. People are complex

Interesting, my experience as an IT consultant was the opposite. The rich knew how to be nice and valued others for their time (they know time is money so they appreciate yours being given to them) but the less wealthy or lower classes were more likely to be rude. Same is true in my current business, the wealthy will pay what they owe and usually also hold better conversations even whereas the less wealthy someone is, the more likely they are to try defraud me. That's just a certain bracket though, as the wealth of the individual drops below a certain threshold, they become nicer, likely because in that situation they rely on my services more. Conclusion, AHs, but most of them are middle class in my experience.

I don't make much eye contact. But im always looking out for others, who are actually in need, because had no one looked out for me, i'd be in a bad position in life. We need each other for money, but we need each other more to keep us emotionally safe from bad people and to reduce the amount of bad people over time. The less bad people the brighter future we will have as humans.

Jack Mihof Keep in mind, in some supermarkets if cashiers have less money im their cash register, than is stated by the register system, they need to pay that amount to the super market, so it's the hard working guys who get minimum wage for their work, who get the short end of the stick. Sure it was their own fault, but it's still nice to give it back to them.

on of my dads friends was letting his brother stay with him for 3 years, after those 3 years he got a job in a law firm and ended becoming really wealthy. A few years later the brother who became the lawyer sued his own brother because the house he used to live in had poor living conditions, they were both poor at the time so the house had really bad maintenance at the time. Its a messed up story.

d87fresh1 you do know that ceo's aren't necessarily the company's founder, they get paid just like everyone else and are not expected to contribute their own personal finances. They risk no more than any other employee. A ceo is typically chosen by a board of directors as the leader of the company, if they are fired it is usually because they did a really bad job.

... and so the narrow-minded stereotypes continue. "Being Rich" and "Acting Rich" are two completely different things. True financial wealth has absolutley nothing to do with how much you spend on cars, clothes or toys. The wealthiest people I know drive Subarus, Jeeps and Chevys. Please read "The Millionaire Next Door" by Thomas J. Stanley. It tells a very different story.

This comment completely ignores the point of the video, which states that "statistically, rich people are more likely to be jerks." It is as if you assume that the video claims that all people who are 'rich' are uncompassionate, which is simply not true. You can know many, many rich people who are all very nice, but that doesn't mean that the video's conclusion is inaccurate, and it certainly is not trying to spread "narrow-minded stereotypes" as that would be nonsensical.

Aceric the Mighty I was actually challenging the stereotype that people who spend money on fancy cars are rich. Someone who makes $500k/year and spends $500k/year on cars, clothes and toys is not rich. Please read the book. Truly wealthy people are statistically much more generous than the average person and certainly don't flaunt their wealth.
@russiancomrade8046
@russiancomrade8046 6 жыл бұрын
Aceric the Mighty yes but looking at the top 400 comments “statically poor people are narrow-minded” I can definitely see how some points in this are true (the statistic with the car rudeness) but not all of them are, some of them are quite irrelevant when you step back and look at it. But now when I disrespect a poorer class I get flamed for it.

There's a lot of research being performed to determine whether humans have evolved thanks to selfish or altruistic/empathetic traits. By analyzing both historical early-human group interactions as hunter-gatherers, along with modern behavior research, there's a lot of evidence pointing to the theory that the only way that humans could have possibly evolved has come from altruistic actions. Those who seek power by defaming others are typically thrown out and looked down upon, both historically and in modern society. In terms of people in power abusing power, there's another theory named the "power paradox" which explains how almost any human in a position of power will typically abuse said power and forget most of the morals they believed in while in search of said power. It happens to most humans and only the most disciplined won't abuse the power they gain. If you'd like to look into said research, look up Dacher Keltner, he's a psychology professor at UC Berkeley who is one of the leading scientists performing the research. One last thing: just because someone is poor doesn't mean that they're an idiot, and just because someone is rich doesn't mean that their opinion is in any way more valid than the next man's. It's good to get the opinions of people from both ends of the spectrum.

I think it's also just the fact that depending on HOW you got rich also can define a few things. I worked hard, played my cards correctly, and made very tough choices in not spending extra. It required quite a bit of self discipline. Meanwhile, most of the friends I hang out with... are not rich, ask for money more than a few times, and overall don't put in as much to improve, whereas I'm always looking towards something to work on. That being said, I understand that's just how I drive myself forward. I want to improve, and seeing others not play the game does create some feeling of laziness, but that same feeling could be said on why I'm not an artist or NASA scientist: because to me, that isn't important.
