🤔 Are "skoro" and "téměř" the same? (Translating "Almost" to Czech)

'Almost' is a handy word but how do we translate it into Czech? Is it téměř? Skoro? Or málem? Let's go through several sentences to see how different (or the same) these words are.

Ahoj Zuzko, moc děkuji za nové úžasné video 😊 Mám pocit, že v češtině existují více synonym než v jiných jazycích, ale možná není to pravda a je to jenom pocit... Např: ačkoliv = ačkoli = i když = třebaže = přestože = ... 😳 a mnoho dalších příkladů...

To máte pravdu. Může to být vlivem jiných jazyků ze sousedních zemí a také tím, že se čeština musela v době národního obrození obnovit (18./19. století) a některá slova se "vymyslela" nebo vzkřísila z dob minulých. Ještě že jsme tu tehdy měli ambiciózní jazykovědce, čeština málem vyhynula!

That's absolutely correct, you're doing it right! The links that the tutor shares are the ones that benefit him/her the most. If you click on a course you see directly on Udemy, the platform will get most of the profit.

In Ukrainian, “skoro” means what in Czech is “brzy”-that is, “soon.”

There is absolutely equal to Czech meaning of "skoro" in Ukrainian too: "Dědečkovi je skoro 90 let." -> "Дідусеві скоро 90 років."

@@alexaphonin1877 are “майже” and “скоро” interchangeable to you? Ukrainian “скоро” is literally “soon” in English and “brzy” in Czech. Wouldn't the more proper translation of your example sentence be: “Dědečkovi je už téměř 90 let.” or “Dědečkovi brzy bude 90 let”? (the word order might be wrong, I'm still learning).

@@run-of-the-mill No they are not exactly interchangeable of course, just like in Czech too.. You may “майже” "reach a goal" but you can't say “скоро” in this case. My point was - in that case, with grandpa, “скоро” brings exactly the same meaning as "skoro" in Czech. So nothing confusing.

@@alexaphonin1877 did you use “skoro” in the “soon” or the “almost” sense? AFAIK, the only equivalent for the Ukrainian “скоро” in Czech is “brzy,” and it is a time adverb. Your Ukrainian translation of the adverb might be interpreted in two ways: as either the adverb of time (the “soon” sense), or the adverb of intensity (the “almost” sense). So, unless “skoro” in Czech doesn't ONLY mean “almost,” as implied in this video, but can also mean “soon,” as does Ukrainian “скоро” or “незабаром,” then it is either not literal use of this word, or your interpretation of it.
