As a community, we breed for morphs, we combine different locales & subspecies, & produce all sorts of things that you’d never see in the wild. As long as the species involved aren’t critically endangered & the offspring turn out healthy, I don’t really see anything wrong with hybrids.

BEEN working for many years in animal rescue, don't do it anymore because I'd be in jail , because of the horror I have seen😔 anyway this show is definitely nothing to do with that ! I don't know why it's being talked about? I've only been watching this vlog short time but I know this man takes awesome care of his animals and nothing to do with interpreting and backyard breeders? Some turtles frequently hybridize where their natural ranges overlap. Box Turtles & Painted Turtles are species which commonly cross-breed in the wild, especially the former (“Boxies”). For that reason I don’t mind hybrids produced in captivity as pets. The only issue I have would be releasing a fertile hybrid into the wild when the possibility exists of “diluting” the gene-pool of a pure species or subspecies.

I agree - both routes are good. With habitat shrinking, it's good to keep pure genes to reseed an area - and it's also good to produce specimens that are good for captive specimens, because thriving amongst people ensures the culture of love for these animals. And awesome colors and patterns attract folks. Humans tend not to care about things they don't love. Example: a smaller Retic that folks keep as a pet, makes them appreciate the giants that live in the forests. Incentivizes them to keep what is there.

I do like the idea of this, however some morphs/hybrids have issues. I think Hybridizing needs to be responsible for the reptile's health and not just how they look cool. I feel the same way about certain dog breeds that may look cute but have health defects.
@heysaucemikehere1804
@heysaucemikehere1804 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think a big issue for the majority of people is that it’s not true to nature. The issue is that a lot of them are solely bred for their looks, this ends in horrible defects in the animals. Another reason for a lot of people is that can hurt the bloodlines of the original species, same reason that majority of tarantula keeps are against hybrids. From what I know, some species are basically gone because of an insane up in hybridization.

Maybe these breeders are responsible but I'm worried that they will sell to people who are not that responsible (unfortunately many reptile keepers are irresponsible) and hybrids will be reliesed the nature and affect the bloodline of snakes or the fauna in that place. This is mostly what I'm passionate about and not how cool the snakes look, it's so depressing to me when nature is poluted or species suffer or even die out because of irresponsible people.

Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated with chimaeras and other mythological hybrid creatures. After finding out the mammal hybrids like zedonks, mules or ligers are all infertile I was disappointed but then I found out that there are many snake hybrids which come out fertile. So now I'm doing my own research with my collection of pythons to try and understand it more and see which species are compatible to make fertile offspring. I am definitely taking a solid middle ground on the hybrid subject. There are clear pros and cons and if anything they balance out; on one hand, you have the opportunity to not only experiment with different patterns, colors, shapes, sizes and temperaments, but I think there's also an opportunity to learn more about each individual species. On the other hand, there's always the risk of harmful mutations and deformities, and like the issue with the anacondas, one species might be inclined to eat the other. I've also heard people discuss how the hemipenes of one species might not fit the other, so the size of each species plays a role too. But at the same time, there are hybrids that occur in nature (I believe gaboons and rhinos), so its not always unnatural. I think overall it's a very tedious process to get hybrid breeding "right". I think that as long as it's done very carefully and responsibly, and by people who actually know what they're doing and not just those trying to capitalize on a new trend, it could work out just fine. Hybrids can allow for more customization, so people can choose more specific snakes that can suit the temperament, color and size that they want and can care for more easily - I believe Emily from Snake Discovery bred some hybrid garters that ate better and ended up being better pets compared to the parent species. I'm glad the controversy exists, because it opens up some important discussions, and I think it's nice to have people both educating and giving opinions freely like this! The hybrid topic is a really neat example of how this community experiments and evolves over time.

Same for me, conservation us a lot more important and urgent issue compared with how cool a snake looks like We want to leave a earth for our children to live on, we have already destroyed so much and stolen and destroyed the land for so many important species. We just can't keep going on like this. It makes me sad that none of the reptile keepers are talkibg about this issue and specially as reptiles still are wild animals and not domesticated like dogs. And wrong reptiles reliesed in the wrong place can do lots of damage, lets not risk it and possibly make things worse with hybrids. To me an animals health is lot more important too than looks, do we have to risk doing the same mistakes like with dogs. Then there are so many amazing, cool loking snakes already naturally.

I just see it as a further step - than say, splitting off the various morph-genes from a Normal Ball Python, and then recombining them to make new colors and patterns.... only with "sister species" instead.

It is really interesting to see what gets passed between the two. The hybrid snakes I've seen from pics and vids seem to be a middle ground blend between the two parent species in terms of body dimensions/shape. I love animals and if we can have more types of animals then I'm for it. (Obviously assuming it wont create something that is doomed to suffer all it's life)

Hybrids have always been a fascination of mine. Getting into the unknown of hybridization is exciting; always a wonder what color, pattern, physical characteristics, as well as personalities will come from it. With appropriate labeling I don't see a problem with hybrids one bit.

@@Gfhdjfndh It's not really like dogs at all. Every dog is a part of the same species "Canis Familiaris". They look different because generations of selective breeding has molded them into different shapes, but they are genetically one species. Hybrids, on the other hand, are created by combining two related species to make a new animal.

I have a nuanced opinion on hybrids. As a hobbyist and reptile enthusiast, I love the idea of exploring unknown territory in herpetoculture with the propagation and rearing of hybrid animals. Pushing biological boundaries (and the boundaries of what were familiar with in the hobby) in pursuit of odd, peculiar, and one of a kind creatures is a fascinating endeavor and undoubtably rewarding, particularly when the crossing is done with thought to temperament and manageability. As a biologist and wildlife conservationist however, I think hybridization of some species should be an objective most responsibility undertaken with a lot of caution and forethought into initial reasoning and potential future impact to captive breeding conservation efforts. In most cases, hybridizing is harmless; producing imperial kings or corn-hogs is widely innocuous, because the species that comprise these hybrids have strong and well-established breeding efforts and/or are not threatened in their native ranges. Those serious hobbyists who are invested in purity can reasonably obtain pure bred and often locality lines of these commonly kept species; most pet owners and casual hobbyists won’t know or care if their pet is a low content hybrid. Specialty hybrids like bateaters, boa-condas, or diamond-tree pythons are very rare animals that are infrequently produced and are sold at high dollar and high discretion, so I don’t worry too much about those either. My misgivings are about hybrid breedings of animals that are not commonly kept in captivity and/or who do not have well established breeding colonies in captivity, especially if they are threatened in their native range. If I saw for example, a boelens python hybrid, I would surely be impressed, but I would also be questioning the reasoning and ethics behind producing such a creature when preserving and healthfully establishing known bloodlines should (IMO) be the priority for ensuring the longevity of the species in captivity.

I’ve always been pretty fascinated with hybrid animals of all sorts, from ligers to wolf-dogs. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes it doesn’t. But my personal belief is that if there’s no harm to the mates or to the offspring themselves then why not? No ones suggesting we introduce new species into the naturally occurring world. This is simply to create new animals for us to enjoy. Some people may think that’s human selfishness but by that logic, humans keeping animals at all is selfish. We already breed reptiles for different morphs and localities. Hell, like Kevin said, dogs which are probably the most common pet out there have been bred beyond recognition and now most breeds have almost no semblance to their original wolf ancestors. And mules have been used throughout history for the furtherment of human expansion. The only real issue with reptile hybrids is that people aren’t used to them because they’re so new and we’ve yet to grow accustomed to the idea. So I say let’s go for it above and beyond. If we come across an issue then we’ll work to deal with it, but humans didn’t come this far in expansion and scientific discovery by playing it safe 🤷🏼‍♂️

This will be a long one! The thing with hybrids is that you can take good characteristics from one animal, and merge it with other good characteristics from another. Do I think we should hybridise animals just for attention and money? Absolutely not. It isn’t natural and we may start to lose species characteristics or put a certain stereotype on certain species that just aren’t true. However, one thing I like about hybridisation and hybridising reptiles is that you can make a difference when it comes to maybe for example, helping a human being. Maybe there is someone who has a mental disability that may completely thrive with an emotional support animal. Snakes are very calming to touch especially for people with autism (one reason I keep snakes). In these cases giving an animal good characteristics through hybridisation to help those who need an emotional support animal is an extremely important thing to do. I personally thrived because I found snakes, they help me get out of my meltdowns as they feel calming. So I say yes and no to hybridisation, we must only use it for the right purposes. Really enjoying the vids by the way!

Some hybrids are naturally occuring in the wild. If you have closely related species with overlapping ranges and habits, they might very well produce some hybrid babies once in a while. Hybrids get a bad rep because of the ones that turn out badly, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be bred at all. Sometimes hybrids even get healthier than each one of their their parents, that's called hybrid vigour (a famous example is mules). With that said, I really like wild types.

Dog hybrids are not legal though, the different types of dogs are not hybrids, a hybrid would be dog mixed with a hyena or fox. Strange how people don't see how bad and dangerous that could both for the animal, people and nature and probably even worse with reptiles as we know lot less about them than dogs, what if lots of hybrids got out. Arn't we destroying the nature enough already, no need to create more problems. Why are people never satisfied, with ball pythonsas example we have hundreds of cool morphs already, no need to create hybrids too.

I personally think hybrids are fine. Hybrids can provide owners with both a unique pet and experience, as well as you guys mentioned, allow people to own a snake that they couldn't previosly because of size or manorisum. They can be fun and exciting if done ethically. As well as this we have been breeding and crossing all types of animals from dogs to birds. Besides we have been breeding morphs and colourations since forever, are hybrids such a stretch? - Tara D.

I believe breeding hybrids is quite intriguing! The experience and skills it would take to produce a healthy hybrid says more about the handlers than the snakes themselves. Of course, maintaining pure snakes for future population is important, but it's unlikely these hybrids are going to pollute the pools of pure snakes because you are aware of what you are doing. Great job!

I'm a fan of the hybrid in some cases. I think that it is a way of building onto the basics if that makes sense. Though not in all case is it a good move but it's like a experiment in what comes out and how to handle that animals needs. I would say probably more for more advanced reptile keeper unless they have access to someone with more experience. But alot of times I think the hybrids look amazing. Thanks for the content guys.

I was just going to ask about taking temperament, personality etc into consideration when creating hybrids. I don't particularly like snakes, I'd never own one but Kevin is changing my mind about at least not being fearful of them. How interesting to see Kevin palpate with his hands& head. As a Nurse of 26+ yrs I always close my eyes to palpate a patient & sometimes to take weakened vitals or even to access a vein/ artery for needling. I find cutting off one of my senses helps to enhance another.

I appreciate that Kevin has someone working for him/with him who disagrees with him, I think that's a good measure of great leadership because it would be super easy for Kevin to only employ people who agree with him and never be challenged. I don't mind hybrid breeding, as long as it's done well for the animals' quality of life both in breeding and for the offspring. Obviously the first breeding of a hybrid is always a test, but if you end up with 90% birth defects the first 2 times, you shouldn't do it again even if the 10% are amazing
