So we have a 2019 Can Am RCX3 on order in 72 wide. Looking at getting a set of these. I know you ran down the list of parts for the RZR but besides Ball Joints and Tie rod ends what else will the can am need to be reliable. We live in Elko and do everything from high speed desert to technical rock crawling as well as goto dunes and KOH. Asking a lot out of this machine but thought portals would allow me to put 35s on and not blow threw belts and axles. My understanding the RC model has stronger Arms over the base model. Sorry for the long question. Thanks

That is awesome Steve! For the can am you will definitely want to upgrade the radius rods to a hd set preferably billet. I am not familiar with the a arm changes on the 19' you spoke of but if they are anything like the ones on the 18' I would change them out also!

Hey! Does the high lifter edition already have forward offset a arms? I would definitely get HD tie rods and ball joints.
@SJS-Outdoors7 жыл бұрын
I have a 2016 Polaris General. I put a 4" GDP gear lift on it with the 1.5" forward arched front A-arms and I run 34" cryptid tires. That thing is a beast. I do some rock crawling, mudding and once or twice a year I go to west Texas for some fun in the hot sun. When I got to west Texas, I actually convert the general back to stock (except the a-arms) so I can ride out there. I've thought about taking it lifted to west Texas but a couple things stop me. The temps out there get crazy hot so I am just not sure if they will be ok un-vented. The shock loads going over huge rocks at any speed make me think the ball joints will let go and the steel framework of the lift worries me too. I bought the HD tie rod kit from superATV for it so at least the tie rods might be alright. We put 250-450 miles on our ATVs each time we go out there. Do you think the lift would survive?
@SlikRokProductions7 жыл бұрын
I Have no doubts the portals would hold up just fine, only thing you might have and issue we have experience that when the days temperature gets super hot you will probably get some leaking from the expansion. But if you vent them you should have zero issues. We only had this happen once and it was 115 degrees in Moab and we we cruising fast.
@SJS-Outdoors7 жыл бұрын
Excellent! thanks for the reply! I believe ya'll upgraded the ball joints on ya'lls and I know Keller is the best choice but man I can't convince myself to spend 520 bucks for 4 ball joints!

You are very welcome! So look at it this way, yes they cost more but if you ever have a ball joint fail you are looking at damaging a arms, shocks, steering components and think how much that will cost. Replace them with Kellers and never worry about it again.

Thanks in advance.
@SlikRokProductions7 жыл бұрын
lowrider9367 yes with the smaller tires you should be okay but it is hard to say for certain. My only concern would be with the smaller tires is you would be so lower geared your top end would be dramatically reduced.

Well just got back from Easter Weekend in Moab & definitely going to invest in a set of portals. I am thinking of going with the 6" & when I wear out my 30" Mongrells I will probably go up to 34" I had a great time with no damage to the machine other than a punctured tire that we fixed while on the trail. Unfortunately I didn't come across anybody on the trail that was running portals, However back @ camp I ran into a guy from Montana that was running a set on his 14 - 1000 4 seater Razor. You mentioned that you tested out some chain driven portals, Where did they fail at? I like the concept of a chain drive, but they obviously have to be engineered properly. Like everything else, but I believe the concept is sound. And would give some options that would be more difficult with gear drive. And as always your videos are great!
@SlikRokProductions7 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew they were by a company by the name of Rock Crusher that has since gone out of business. The idea was okay but the product was lacking in its design and they experienced so many issues and failures eventually leading to closing their doors and leaving a bad taste in the market on portal gear lifts. I think a company called side by side gear still offers them or at least parts for them. If you google them you will find a lot of threads on them. Thank you for the comment!
@themadmachinist86376 жыл бұрын
chains are great under constant loads but they stretch and they don't like dynamic stress. They aren't great for absorbing take off torque and quick stoppage. Look are the sheer size of the chains used in FWD trans axles and then remember that all of that is moving in about the same direction and slows down slowly with the motor. Chains between the wheel and axle would create all sorts of high stress. Its just not a good idea. Gears are far superior for the task.
@jackhlandersiii22907 жыл бұрын
Did you guys vent the portals on any machines? I see a lot of folks doing this to prevent the seals from blowing.

similar to how the front/rear diffs are vented with a tube going up high so they can breath, supposedly keeps the seals from blowing when they get hot.

Kenneth Jones yes those other upgrades would be a good idea for safety when running the portals. That is unfortunate about having no shops you trust. We know some people in Alabama that we can reach out to to see if they know a good reliable place if you would like. We are not a shop, we do our own work on our personal machines and help friends out from time to time. But that said we won't leave you stranded and would most definitely help you out if needed!
