Are 2022 F1 Cars going to be really hard to drive?
So Lando Norris said in an interview that the 2022 F1 cars are ‘not as nice to drive’ after trying it in the McLaren simulator - and yes, that was a pretty fleeting comment that lead some to think that these new cars are going to be really tricky.
Now, to some, that is a great thing - moving back to cars that look more lively with drivers battling them through the corners. But we’re not sure on whether things are going to pan out that way.
So today, I’m going to give you my thoughts on these cars from the perspective of a driver, and we’ve got Scarbs to explain this from the perspective of an engineer. All to figure out if they will ACTUALLY be harder to drive. Lets go!

Before we get into it, what did Lando ACTUALLY say?
‘It's a very different car to drive. In a way not as nice as this season.
“But I think hopefully that's the same case with every other team as well. And we'll see, there's no point trying to think it's amazing or terrible.’
Now, it’s GOING to be very different - there are so many changes that it would be strange if it driove the same. But the ‘not as nice’ bit? That did seem strange to me.

Lando's only driven one generation of F1 cars though. I'd be interested in what experienced drivers like Alonso, Vettel or Hamilton have to say about it. Ricciardo didn't like the way last years McLaren drove either plus they still have to get in the new cars. Quicker transients is exactly what makes cars more difficult, and what extracts most skill to keep them in optimum performance window. It is especially demanding when avoiding snap oversteer or tank slap moments. This is also a reason why consumer market simulations tends to lean towards unrealistically slow transients. This season should be interesting to say the least.

It's a very plausible explanation that the aero and tire model isn't yet correlated to the real car yet, and I would not expect them to be. Tire modeling is the most difficult thing in racing, and with how big the aero changes are, I'd be surprised if they were there yet too.

What makes tire modellin so difficult ? I thought aero cfd stuff was the most difficult.
@BmacRDX
@BmacRDX 3 жыл бұрын
@@eicossa7993 tire physics is really difficult because it doesn’t follow conventional physics for friction and at the peak of the working range, the tire is at least partly multi-phase (solid and liquid), making it extremely difficult to determine what you're working with. Tire data presented to race teams shows grip vs load and inclination angle (camber), among other things, but that only gets you in the ballpark for optimizing the car for the tire. With such a big change (18" wheels, plus larger diameter), I'd expect dialing in the suspensions in 2022-2023 to make the new tires work will be just as much of the focus as improving the aero. CFD has much higher repeatability and fidelity actually.

Yeah he has been racing for 22 years , and has raced in F1 , LeMans 24Hr , Indycar , FIA world Endurance , 24Hrs Daytona . If the cars are difficult to drive , then it’s going to be a jackpot for Alonso . The only real competition for him would be Carlos Sainz , cuz he is one of the drivers who may not be quick but knows how to extract the best from the car and is scary consistent . Also he is going to have that Ferrari power (given 2022 Ferrari is not a tractor) So if there is anyone who can challenge him it’s going to be Carlos (Given that Alpine develops a descent car , even if it is not necessarily the best , like 2020 Racing Point)

I hope the cars aren't harder to drive just to be harder to drive. If they offer more of a risk/reward scenario, where they become very difficult to drive at the ragged edge, but offer the precision to extract an extra 10th that safer driving couldn't provide, then THAT would be good racing.

@@jannadrielcervo7753 to a degree, yes. But it is not accurate that every car has been equally difficult and rewarding to drive. The V10 era with grooved tires, for example, required a much more conscious awareness of the edge than the last few years. The recent cars are almost all driven in the exact same way and, at the top level, it comes down to package more than pure skill (again, not taking anything away from drivers today). The idea is to provide a car that works well to a high level for everyone, but requires master precision and feel to extract the last few percent of performance. The cars of the last few years were blunted from that, in a sense.

Good. That's what makes current Indy Cars so much fun to watch. They require the driver to do more work, they aren't easy. That produces closer racing and more input from the driver and less the car doing the driving.

Pretty sure the primary reason why the camera shook far more during the "Senna" era was because they now have image stabilisation in the cameras... not arguing that those cars wouldn't have been bone shakers but modern cameras have optical image stabilisation and without that they wouldn't be broadcast quality today

Fairly sure that the image quality of last year is due primarily to image stabilisation improvements compared to Senna’s late 80s car onboard camera technology as opposed to being the quality of the suspension.

My simulation and modeling skills are not yet up to f1 standards, but from what I have done, aero principles are reasonably accurate to model and calculate in computer simulations. What people seem to forget about aerodynamics is that the principles have been valid for as long as the earth has had the atmosphere we know today, all that's changed is our ability to understand this. All the big advancements in aerodynamic understanding were done before computer simulations. There were no courses or books on how to build an aeroplane when the Wright brothers took their first flight, no one used a wind tunnel to develop an aeroplane for another 30 odd years until the dc3 was being developed. No one knew how an aircraft would behave as it passed through the sound barrier until after the event. Practice has always led the way, theory and calculations have always followed prototypes. Simulations as we know them today are derived from theoretical calculations. What's far more difficult to model is how the tyres respond, how they deflect in corners, how the respond over bumps. Quite a bit of the cars suspension movement has been through the deflection of the tyres since the 1970's. Physical load test rigs can be build and the tyres can be measured under these conditions, but dynamic loading in practice will always give different results to a test rig. Underside aero performance has always had a strong correlation to suspension and tyre control. The instability in the 1994 Williams was because the suspension movement couldn't maintain the parameters required by the aero package, so in certain corners the aero balance would change causing the cars to spin. More recent cars do still have these issues to a certain extent. The only real certainty I could really predict for this season is that it's going to be interesting to see how things pan out. Whilst none of the current team personal have hands on experience of ground effect, Adrian Newey did study few ground effect as part of his university degree just as the original ground effect was being phased out. Given what he usually pulls out of the bag during major rule changes plus his experience, I think it would be very brave to bet against him.

does stiff suspension make lock ups easier or harder? I would think there is less weight transfer while braking with a stiff suspension making it easier to not lock up. But maybe it doesnt really matter as long as the driver is just used to the way the suspension is.
@41BOT
@41BOT 3 жыл бұрын
@@squeakybunny2776Less weight transfer means more load transfer. It means tires at front will get loaded up faster. More load means more grip. However there is a thing called tire load sensitivity, it basically means as load on tires increases, the increase of grip is diminishing, so although drivers will probably be able to brake harder, it also most likely will be trickier to avoid locking. Although engineers definitely can play with suspension and adjust antidive geometry accordingly. IIRIC the tires will also be wider, wider tires by default are less load sensitive. Basically there are lots of variables, and hard to tell. But most likely braking will be more extreme, and also more demanding on driver.
@squeakybunny2776
@squeakybunny2776 3 жыл бұрын
@@41BOT "less weight transfer means more load transfer" I think I understand but what I thought would be trickier about a less stiff suspension is dat the load exerted on the front tires varies during braking. I thought it would perhaps be easier if the load applied would be more static during braking.

Could it be that the new car is just _different_ ? The 20-21 McLaren had that widely reported "odd" characteristic, which clearly didn't bother Lando as much as it did Danny Ric. I've also seen it said (mostly by Peter Windsor) about differences in driving style, in that (to simplify) some drivers are much more used to the full brakes - off brakes - aggressive turn in - apply throttle at apex style, whereas other drivers are more brake slightly earlier - turn in - finesse brake and throttle through corner until you hit the apex style. And that Danny Ric was in this latter category and Lando in the former, with the McLaren not being forgiving to that latter style. And it might be the new McLaren is now "better", or at least, not as good to drivers with Lando's style. Or just that it's different to the old one. Think about the difference to a FWD hot hatch on the limit and a RWD sports car or even a Porsche 911. If you've never driven the latter on the limit, it's a lot different to the FWD and you might exit the car thinking this RWD sports car (in a simulator) is a pile of oversteering backwards into the inside barrier piece of sh-t. And Lando, of course, has only ever driven McLarens of that exact design lineage his whole career and now has to adjust to a new car characteristic. For me, it's almost as if any other driver had made that comment, I'd be inclined to think there's something in it. Or it might be McLaren just trying throw a bit of smoke up.

They have driven cars in different eras with different aero packages, V10, V8 and V6 engines... and the younger drivers may need a bit more time to adapt to the new cars due to their lack of experience. But who knows? I may be wrong and the young drivers will give us a surprise.
