The NHL season is an 82 game marathon. To be elevating Vancouver to contender status after they just left the start line is foolish. What do they need? If they somehow make the playoffs, they have no toughness. They'd be swatted around like mosquitoes.

Petty, Hughes, Miller and even Brock have been getting so much attention meanwhile both Demko and Desmith are putting on Master Class goaltending clinics almost every night… Ian clarke has truly turned our keepers into a 2 headed monster. Demko is potentially the best goalie in the league when he’s on his game. He is literally unbeatable some nights. It’s mind blowing. Hronek has also been an amazing pick up who fits in PERFECTLY. It’s definitely early to be calling these guys a cup contender but you can’t deny they’re extremely dangerous if they get in. Which they will. playoff demko will be unbelievable- but we’re just enjoying the ride for now 👍, it’s a long season God bless Patrik Allvin, Jim Rutherford, and Rick Tocchet

As someone who's originally from Winnipeg and also a Canucks fan for the last 2 decades or so, it's really nice to see both the Canucks and Jets right at the top of the NHL standings, this has lined up to be a banner season so far for the two teams I cheer for, just hoping this continues into the playoffs. For me, it would be a win-win if the Canucks and Jets faced each other in the Western Conference Final, though admittedly I'd cheer for Vancouver just a bit more.

Nearly 40 years of watching this team has me on edge and I keep waiting for the bottom to fall out but I honestly don’t remember seeing them play this well as a unit. The 1994 run was great because they shouldn’t have made it that far but the sheer will of Linden and McLean and the boys made it happen. The 2011 run was great because the twins were on top of their game and we had some great second tier players in Kesler, Bieksa, Burrows, etc, but we still also had guys like Aaron Rome. This season feels totally different. Everyone is on the same page from management on down. Watching the Canucks transition out of their own end is a thing of beauty. As you said, another solid dman could make a huge difference but otherwise I don’t think there’s anything about this team that I would change. Outside of the Toronto and Philly games this season, they’ve been good even when they’ve played a little sloppy and that, to me, is the measure of a good team. When you can pull off wins when you’re not at your best. Ya love to see it!

that 2011 team sure was the dream team with the twins, kesler, luongo, burrows, bieksa, raymond, samuelsson, hamhuis, salo, rypien, schneider and glass and head coach alain vigenault. I was never much of a canucks fan but i will say that 2011 run was pretty fun to watch when it was happening and it is quite fascinating looking back at it

@@nucks4life11 me neither! I’m 41 years old and I got SUPER into hockey the year Linden was drafted (1988) and have followed every move ever since. There’s something different about this start though. The Canucks fan in me wants to be cautious but, barring any major injuries, I don’t see a real weak spot in their game. I’d say my favourite part of this season that almost no one is talking about is how good Casey DeSmith has been. I think the last time we had a backup that I had real faith in was Cory Schneider!

Another part about this team is that unlike 2011, there isn’t a guy you could hate because of their typical dirtiness, like Burrows, Lapierre and especially Torres. Maybe Petey or Miller at times, but that’s about it. And I think that’s really important because it makes the Canucks easier to cheer for.

Demko has always been criminally underrated. Pretty much any goalie can be good on a good team with good defence. But Demko has had trash defence and still played phenomenally. When he was injured last year, the canucks absolutely crumbled. He is the equivalent to Hellebuyck or Saros in that he does not have good defence in front of him but continuously steals games. This is coming from an oilers fan btw
@jeodoretoel

it's honestly astounding how Tocchet came into the org as one of the most hated individuals, but turned it around so fast. Admittedly he was hated for the wrong reason -- it wasn't his fault Bruce had the rug pulled under him the way it was. Tocchet's professionalism and attitude towards the team is visibly important to him which is great and the fans respect that. reading the title I would argue that you're jinxing the team, but you're making sense. I want to see what they're like at the Christmas break before answering your question Great video tho!
@ajbolt7
@ajbolt7 6 ай бұрын
Yeah I definitely had a good bit of disdain for Tocchet because of the circumstance. It was impossible not to like Boudreau, and management's frankly disgusting treatment of him made the departure infuriating. Especially with how he was a dead man walking for WEEKS as they just waited and waited until the hardest parts of the schedule were over before removing him and bringing in Tocchet. Since Tocchet was management's guy and management were being such assholes, definitely a challenge separating Tocchet from them. And then the commitment to (what I considered) "meaningless" wins at the end of the season when we were so far out of a playoff spot and had a great shot at a top 10 draft pick made it even more annoying. But I'll admit it, the focus on getting those wins was worth it. Getting the team used to the systems leading up to this season has clearly paid dividends.

The Canucks had a lot of bad luck in previous years, but their luck has been great this season. There's no doubt about this. The goaltending has also been great. If the goaltending had been good when Bruce Boudreau was coaching the last year, I believe that he would still be the coach today. However, I'm concerned about the playoffs. I think this year's Canucks is comparable to the 2011 Canucks regarding their talent. I really hoped the Canucks would add a really tough guy in the trade deadline this year but they didn't. I believe this is the main factor that stopped the Canucks from winning the Cup. Their powerplay dried up against Boston. I don't approve of fighting, but it's still part of the game. I recently had a look at a video that did a fabulous job covering the 2011 finals. At the end of game 6, Brad Marchand was pounding Daniel Sedin. The game was almost over, the result of the game was decided -- why not have someone beat the snot out of Marchand? (No, no -- I'm not against Marchand. In fact, Brad would have been a great addition to the Canucks, as well as other players like him). When I watched the game in 2011, i thought "Where is Sergio Momesso when we need him?". There had to be someone on that 2011 team who could've done something. When the powerplay dried up (it was incredible against San Jose), it's too bad the Canucks couldn't counterattack another way -- but they couldn't. Earlier this year, I believed the Canucks would make the playoffs but probably lose in 6 games in the first round. I think they may go further now; nevertheless, I think they are probably 3 years from seriously challenging f

...for the Cup. I think they need more toughness. I know Rick Tocchet will do the best he can -- but he can't go out on the ice and fight someone. Who knows? Maybe if the Canucks get some good bounces, and their goaltending is as good as in the "Bubble year", they will ... They will .. go a lot further than I expect.

Sometime in mid-november, they remembered "oh hey! We're the Canucks" and regressed into painful mediocrity.

And then got out of the slump and have been lighting it up since, while Vegas and LA are mired in their own slumps... if Vancouver can play even moderate to very good hockey from mid-January onward, they should have at least the division on lock, and possibly outlast Winnipeg and Colorado for tops in the West going into the playoffs.

Shocking how having more than 2 nhl-defenders on your roster makes defense and goaltending better. Scoring is so overrated. Canucks scored a lot last year too, and just having soucy, cole and hronek made them a contender. With good defense you get more puck possession, more offensive time, less chances for goalies to make a mistake. Seriously, teams pay them but fans are underrating 2nd-3rd pair d-men soooo much

Tocchet also seems to have slapped the undisciplined nonsense out of Myers.

@@buggernut3643there's some mistakes he's making still but looks much better! I've always liked the long reach Myers has, he's using it this season for sure

i mean myers doesnt have to be a superstar on 3rd pair, but poolman and myers on the first 2 lines with like 20min+ of ice time is nothing you can compete with @@buggernut3643

Too early for optimism. As a lifelong 'Nucks follower, I've seen too many disappointments. There is still plenty of time left this year for the real team to show up...

All the bounces going their way this season and it will eventually balance itself out. Their penalty kill is still terrible and they have benefited from some suspect reffing getting way more power plays than their opponents. A couple of injuries and this team is in trouble. I wouldn’t call them contenders just yet. Last I saw you can’t win a cup in November.
