It used to be, teams shared a single penalty box. Even after a fight. Two minute penalties were served for the full two minutes. No matter how many goals were scored on the power play. Freezing the puck against the boards got a stoppage in play and a face off. There used to be a time when there was no center ice line. With the center line came into NHL hockey, the pass over two lines was considered as being offside. Teams disapproved of goalie masks, because they felt the mask partially blocked the goalies view of pucks, at their feet. Referees would drop the puck at face offs whenever they felt the time was right. So face offs went off quickly.

The Canadiens of the 50's were so good on the power play it forced the NHL to change the rule on serving the full 2 minutes.

IMO the player should have to sit the full 2 minutes if the Power Play team scores teams play 5-on-5 but that player cant be put in till after the 2 minutes are finished

Scotty Bowman, the greatest hockey coach of all time, also didn't like the number 13. He refused to stay in any room on the 13th floor of a hotel, and if the hotel's floor numbers skipped 13 to accommodate people like him, he would refuse to stay on the 14th floor, because that was really the 13th floor. And after all of that, he would add the digits of his room number, and if they added to 13, he would request a different room. Upon hearing how much he hated that number, one reporter asked why one of his players at the time, Slava Kozlov, wore number 13. Bowman just shrugged and said, "It works for him". One can be superstitious, and even extremely superstitious, without being a jerk about it.

Lou is also known to have his players be clean shaven. Horvat and Tavares are good examples of this. Tavares instantly grew a beard in Toronto, Horvat had the scruff until he landed on Long Island.

The stuff about Lou isn’t really NHL rules though. These are specific rules for the specific team he GMs. The NHL didn’t forcing Hosang to change his number. Also, Hosang’s number change didn’t start some spiral that saw him eventually play in Russia. Despite his immense talent, he never made a consistent impact in games. He wasn’t worth keeping around. He also “famously” was sent packing by Garth Snow back to either juniors or the AHL after showing up late to training camp.

I hadn't heard anything about Desjardins being forced to change his number. During training camp there are a lot of players and the less established players are often given high numbers (in the Sharks system, can't speak about other teams). After they're established a bit in their career as an NHLer they often change to a lower number. From a San Jose Hockey Now article with the title "30 Sharks: Why Did Andrew Desjardins Wear No. 69?": “I actually didn’t pick that number,” admitted the former San Jose Sharks player. “It was given to me as a camp number. I eventually made [the Sharks] but as a young guy, I wasn’t able to change numbers and I played a few years with that number. Then, when I was able to change numbers, I changed it to 10.”

In the late 70's, during their 4 consecutive Stanley cup winning run, the Habs Big Three Defensemen, Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard used to block shots all the time. They were paired with the bottom 3 defensemen that specialized in blocking shots; guys like Brian Engblom, Rod Langway, Bill Nyrop, Rick Chartraw, Pierre Bouchard and others. Defense wins championships and the 70's Habs excelled at it.

Ho-Sang continued to play for the Islanders after he changed his number to 26. I think Ho-Sang having 2 points in 10 games in his third NHL season had more to do with the Islanders moving on than any scuffle about his jersey number.

Ho-sang's jersey number speaks volume to his questionable character. Yes he did play 10 games but that was also the season Lou took over. Where he would never play in the NHL again

​@@RobTalksHockey Reasonable minds can differ on this for sure. Ultimately, after 225 AHL games over 6 years, he was a .533 point-per-game player in the minors. Even after he went to the Marlies and no longer had Lou's rules to worry about, he never cracked the NHL lineup. There are 32 teams in the league and all of them passed on Ho-Sang. I don't think there is anyone who has a worse reputation in the league than Tony DeAngelo (deservedly so), but he has been signed twice because he produces. I am not happy about this, because we need more Ho-Sangs in the league and less DeAngelos. Luckily, he strikes me as the kind of guy that does not need hockey to be happy.

Not a fan of Lou’s mishandling here. Hockey’s changed a bunch since the Devils dominated with Lou’s rules. Toronto gained their stride post-LL and the NYI are a scoring ‘black hole’, mostly winning when they are from the skills a goalie that was drafted by Garth Snow. Can’t say I saw any character issues in Ho-Sang beyond not always being committed to defense, and there’s a player or three on just about every roster doing the same thing. That whole episode with NYI looks “rife with shenanigans” that look worse on a hockey exec/mgmt than a kid in their early 20’s.

LL joined the Islanders in 2018. Before Sorokin, the Islanders certainly did have strong goaltending, but it came from Lehner (signed as a FA by LL, 2018-19 Vezina finalist) and then Varlamov (signed as a FA by LL, backstopped to two conference finals). Since LL, the post-season the success (other than the first round of 20-21) has been backstopped by LL FA signings, not Sorokin. "Can’t say I saw any character issues in Ho-Sang beyond not always being committed to defense": I am not sure how closely you followed Ho-Sang's years when Garth Snow was still the GM, but he was quoted as saying "It's time to grow up" after sending him home on the first day of training camp. I am not Lou's biggest fan or greatest defender, but you take the good (two conference final runs) with the bad (losing a talented high-draft-pick) and so far the good has outweighed the bad.

Other than Lemieux, four other players have worn the No. 66. Yanick Dupre, Milan Novy and Gino Odjick all wore it for a year. This past season, T.J. Brodie of the Calgary Flames wore the number as well.

The picture of Drew Miller is from when Mark Stones skate came up and sliced his cheek. Stone lost his balance and fell right after the face off. Miller was coming in to the circle to make a play on the puck and was in the absolute wrong place at the wrong time. Total freak accident. His broken jaw was a different incident.

Lamoriello sounds like he is stuck in the days of the Original 6 era, where no player wore a jersey number higher than 30. During the first decade of the expansion era, players and goalies started wearing jersey numbers between 31 and 40, like Tony Esposito wearing 35 for Chicago during the 1970s. Then, in 1979, Wayne Gretzky would change the jersey number landscape by wearing the highest number possible, which is 99. Since then, no one has worn number 99 in the NHL, though Connor McDavid, and Kirill Kaprizov, are currently wearing the next highest jersey number with 97 (unless there are full time NHLers currently wearing 98).

Way back in 1992 when I was 11 I bought a San Jose Sharks jersey large enough to fit when I was in high school. I had personalized it with my name and number 69. I never saw anyone wear that number, so it was perfect. It’s not for the obvious reason I picked that number. I took 6 from Mario Lemieux’s 66 and a 9 from Wayne Gretzky’s 99 and put it together, 69! I was a bigger fan of Mario, so his 6 goes 1st. To this day I still have that jersey and it still fits. My oldest jersey in my collection.

I modded my own fishbowl so that there's no need for a chin-cup. It just sits perfectly into the J-clips and is held in place by the straps I sewed onto the sides instead of having it come from the bottom. I used to wear a half-shield until I lost enough teeth playing beer league to grow tired of it and just switched. But, the chin-cup got in the way of my vision. I was losing pucks in my feet where I hadn't before. So, I did something about it. And, I can say with 100% confidence that it's a better and safer design that anything out there. It literally feels like I'm wearing a half-shield but with the protection of a full visor. I even sparked 2 other players on my team to do the same thing. And, it's just better. There should be no rule about wearing a full visor. However, if you choose to wear one, and you get into a fight without first taking it off, you should get an extra penalty.

The reason for fish bowls not being aloud is, they are dangerous in scrums. They're a target for grabbing. And if someone's falling, they're going for the mask, pulling the other person down head first

@@RobTalksHockey The NHL has a rule against players punching each other in the face too, which is why it virtually never happens anymore. In all seriousness though, some things you can't fix with a rule because during the pace and emotion of gameplay, guys will do it regardless. Especially in matters of safety, it's much better to solve it with equipment if possible, rather than try to mitigate the damage with penalty minutes or suspensions.

NCAA is talking about forcing the cages to go away and use only the True Fishbowls due to cage grabbing. If everyone has a mandatory full fishbowl they do not get hurt as easy.

Regarding the Ho-Sang stuff, that was one of the dumbest controversies out there. Lemieux never played for the Islanders. Gretzky wore #9 for Gordie Howe until someone on the Oilers already had it. Nobody ever saw that as disrespect from him (or anyone else who wore #9 for the same reason) Similarly, Lebron has worn #23 without controversy. People are going to hate on this, but I can't help but feel that Ho-Sang's race played a factor into the controversy of him choosing that number. As mentioned, the Brodie thing didn't catch nearly the attention. "Attitude" is an oft-cited reason as to why a non-white player didn't mix in well with the team. It's a pretty suspicious word.

Brodie was likely assigned #66... as for Ho-Sang, his older Instagram posts show what kinda guy he is. Posting pics of random girls asses with a sexual caption... that's not NHL Player Behavior. Same with Evander Kane posting pics of himself with money stacks. These aren't Rock Stars or Rappers. They are NHL Players. Also #9, #23 are common numbers. We are talking about #66. Mario Lemieux who was quite possibly, better than Gretzky. It's not a coincidence that almost all NHL Players do not wear that number.

i get why they put the rule in, i was there before/when they did it. but the shooting the puck over glass = automatic penalty is just stupid these days. no one does it on purpose anymore so its just a dumb (and one of the few) penalties the refs HAVE to call..

Keep the rule - but lower the glass on the sides of the rinks. Nothing more boring than guys whipping pucks down the ice by using the 10 foot high side glass. Low glass will allow the defender to possibly stop the puck and keep the pressure on.

The Lamoriello rule is so dumb for his team I would argue to him that having a low number means you are more focused on yourself. If I had to do this, I would try take number 1 and yell: Woo I am number one! to the point he bans that number too from the team or at least get 2 or 3 if I can't get number one and yell: Woo 2nd place! or: Woo 3rd third place! all the time on purpose. Have number 66 is like having Wayne Gretsky's number.

I don't know if anyone will see this but, one of my teachers used to teach in Canada and taught Connor McDavid. She said he was putting effort into his work and constantly engaged, and was smart. On the other hand, Josh Ho-Sang, she believed was even more skilled than McDavid, put little to no effort into his school work. He would turn up late to school and hockey practice thinking, I'm going to make the team anyway. Look how different the two players are now. I'm pretty sure he was also the player who injured Zac Bell @alwayshockey. So take from this what you will.

At 1:35 don't use graphs or diagrams if you can't use them properly. The point of this kind of graph is to visualize the numbers and the difference between them, which is why the y-axis must always start at 0. I love how Lou Lam has all these superstitions and what not, but since his time as GM has not even made it to the finals... 17-18 - Did not qualify, 18-19 Swept by Hurricanes in 2nd round, 19-20 Lost in Conf finals to Lightning 2-4, 20-21 lost semi finals to lightning again game 7, 21-22 did not qualify, and this season barley hanging onto a wildcard spot.... I'm no NY Islander fan, but he is trying to be like Boston, Rangers, or even Tampa. Yet he has screwed the islanders repeatedly with his horrid trades and so much more. Again Im no islanders fan, but I never liked Lou, nor do I like my GM at times, but still his restrictive behaviors is getting him no where.

Not so much a dumb rule as dumb situations the NHL thought needed to be addressed in the rule book. For instance the rules specify what happens if a team decides not to participate in the shootout after OT. Nobody at the rules meeting seems to have asked "do you really think this is going to be a problem?"

Wearing a full facial protection would only lead to more bad things. Now players do have to worry about their face when going into crowded areas and so on, so they still have some sense of self-preservation instinct left. With a fishbowl, you lose it. You feel more immortal. You tackle opponents with worse technique, you go head first into scrums and all that kind of stuff. This would lead to sticks flying left and right, hitting players in throat and neck areas, and even shots would hit those areas more often. Concussions would increase because why worry about your face? It is protected! But you still hit your head with less worry about consequences.

Best one was about rugby where addins a soft helmet made players tackle with worse technique and making themselves and opponents more prone to injuries.

I played with jersey #13 as a goalie one game and was unafraid because of the irony in that my last name means LUCKY in Italian so I thought it would "cancel it out." But, yeah, 13 is bad juju for a lot of Italian Americans. It's like asking for it.

Dumbest rule is the trapezoid. Why does the league penalize goalies for being too good is beyond me. Martin Brodeur is the reason for this rule because he was amazing at handling the puck…almost like a 3rd defensemen. So, what does the NHL do, invent the trapezoid to penalize amazing goaltenders.
