I am a fan of the concept of mythic time, in the sense that I think time operates differently for the gods than for us. This is inherently kind of mind-boggling to understand as humans. I think of it along the lines that everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen to the gods, has already happened, is happening, and will happen. So for example, Baldur has been killed, is being killed, and is yet to be killed. We can reach out to him as the dead-god, the dying-god, and the god-destined-to-die. I think this operates on many different axes. The gods are in relationship with our world. So they operate with us in the past, present, and future as well. This is interesting when you start thinking of the evolution of gods. For example, the Indo-European god Deus Pater becomes Tyr and Zeus. In the way that the gods interact with time along the axis of our world, Tyr and Zeus are both Deus Pater, and Deus Pater is both Tyr and Zeus, but Tyr, Zeus, and Deus Pater are simultaneously 100% distinct entities. Another way of thinking about it: I am my past self, but I am also the self that I am right now, and I hold within me the potential to become many different selves, but simultaneously I am 100% my current self and not my past self at all. I really, really do not want this to sound like I am making them out to be archetypes, because I actually think that they are more distinct entities than we are. It’s just that they have… multiple distinctnesses? Or their “is-ness” operates simultaneously on multiple layers at the same time. They are supernaturally themself and them-selves. I don’t know if this makes any sense but I figured I’d try to explain my perspective. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.

I could see it in the sense that whatever realm the gods exist on run parallel to ours, however the time moves differently. Or perhaps it is even cyclical in nature which is why we see birth and death cycles in religious history of our world. And both realms effect one another differently, and must have each other to exist. Almost like that planet in Interstellar that was so near a black hole, that time was distorted on the planet, making minutes, days in reality. So the gods could exist in a realm similar to that but its slower, years to us could be days to them

It's so crazy because i was just thinking of the evolution of gods, like in my head I was thinking the exact phrase "evolution of gods", because I was thinking of God or gods, any God of any religion and it made me think of, take for example, the Christian God,if he is all seeing and all knowing and if during the time the events from Bible was happening in real time,if that God really knew everything wouldn't he also be aware of the scientific and technological advancements we're having? Just the thought of someone or something during that time being aware of the things that are happening is just crazy to me,or perhaps, like you said, everything is happening simultaneously and somehow somewhere Eve is plucking that Apple from the tree ... Orrrrr is it like God or the gods are evolving the same way we are? Or have they reached peaked evolution and there's no more 'better' than what they are now

I believe that the spirit that appears to you is the fragment of God/all consciousness that will best help you with your destiny. For those who need unconditional love and emotional protection, they tend to find Jesus. I personally was craving knowledge and growth and I believe that's why Odin suddenly popped up for me. For some, atheism is their destiny in this life. Different pantheon iterations are different expressions of source that align you on your path...

For the first 7 years of my practice, I was really on the fence--open to a lot of different theories and never felt "pulled" in one direction or another. Then last autumn, Loki entered my life in a big way and he was so...distinct...it's really the best I can describe it. I could feel his energy and identify it and know without a doubt in my mind (for what that's worth) that it was him and no one else. Recently, in a conversation with a friend (who's more on the side of it's all the same gods, just different names) we were discussing this very subject. She presented a line of reasoning--but I found myself disagreeing and saying that I really didn't look at things that way. and it caught me off guard, because it was such an automatic response on my part and didn't realize that somewhere along the line I had crossed over into "all the gods are separate beings" side of the question. It was absolutely instinctive. It shouldn't be terribly surprising to discover gods who have similar areas of responsibility. powers and concerns. Just as we humans have multiple people in the same profession, it doesn't make all those people the same being--and I suspect that principle holds true for the gods as well. I think this is part of how nature works. To declare that all the gods are the same being of different names, and possibly all aspects of one greater being strikes me as an over-simplification. One that is not consistent with what I can observe of the world...and certainly our world, our natures, are reflections of the gods themselves. We're not one mass organism, so it makes sense to me that the gods--who we reflect--wouldn't be a mass organism either.

i see what u say, but there still are identical stories. higher beings coming from the heavens and teaching us weapons, magic etc? the story of noah‘s ark literally is in every single mythology, the main god wanted to wash away all humans and another god saved them by telling his favorite human to build an arch. christianity just combined them into one god. how do u explain this? i mean how can mesoamerican mythologies have the exact same story as christian or greek ones

i am currently reading about the maya/aztec peoples and it's interesting how those cultures were so similar and yet so different than the ancient egyptians, greeks, roman's...i can't help but think that the mesoamerican cultures remained static as far as religion goes because of their lack of interactions with other cultures...but now i'm listening to your chat and it seems similar in that region too...keeping the same deities and traditions...different names...i guess human nature doesn't change much ;)

A VERY interesting topic today! I think the idea of worshiping a higher deity for a specific purpose is a VERY ancient concept. I think as soon as we became sentient, we started asking "is there something higher, stronger, and more powerful than us". I believe that there was, at one time, a tribe of people who all believed the same thing and then took their beliefs to other places, and those beliefs morphed based on the needs of the people...and so did their language and culture! Some of the gods are far more ancient than others, and far more universal than others. It's fascinating stuff! Thanks for talking about it and sharing those beautiful views!

I think those who think they are all the exact same are more focusing on the arch type versus the actual living being, imho. I think there is a way they could be connected, the same beings reborn under a different time period. Such as how we can still speak to our ancestors once they've been reborn. Old gods still remain present even though they've been reborn too. Challenging to explain a such deep concept in simple human words. lol but that basically sums up my theory on that whole debate.

This is a very interesting topic! I tend to view the gods the way Plutarch does in this quote, "Nor do we think of the gods as different gods among different peoples, nor as barbarian gods and Greek gods, nor as southern and northern gods; but, just as the sun and the moon and the heavens and the earth and the sea are common to all, but are called by different names by different peoples, so for that one rationality which keeps all things in order and the one providence which watches over them and the ancillary powers that are set over all, there have arisen among different peoples, in accordance with their customs, different honours and appellations."

Read polytheist theology of the ancients, Proclus talks about this that the different gods all exist in the same abstract space as separate entities (the nous/spirit/intellect) but it is not some, in essence, worldy pantheon. What binds different deities together in pantheons is the cultural bonds of a people. So in effect Thor and Zeus are separate entities but Thor and Zeus are bound and collected into differing cultural pantheons by humans.
@thesaxonstandard2936

Proclus also doubts that humans could ever fully know every single number of the gods, this knowledge is unknowable to us. good video.

I would say that as per Platonist theology perhaps the common denominator of the gods are the functions, their functions are similar but ultimately they are separate deities.

Jacob, your videos are excellent, very thoughtful discussions about our pagan religions. As a follower of Hellenism I keep an open mind about the ideas raised here, viz., whether the Hellenic and Norse gods are the same. I have no conclusive answer, but I think your comments help the discussion. Tragoe's view that the concepts of the deities may overlap while the deities themselves are independent of each other seems to be in keeping with the Indo-European ideas about the origins of the various pantheons. Since discovering your videos on KZbin I've been stimulated and inspired. Keep up your fine work, I will look forward to seeing more of your outstanding work.

Great job as usual. I spent time in Greece a few years back and while I could definitely feel the presence of the gods there, i recognized they were different somehow from the gods I knew. I believe our ancestors filtered knowledge and worship of the divinities in a way that would best prepare their own descendants. Of course so much has been lost in both paths it helps to have one fill in the gaps of the other.

Hello, Jacob. Sorry for my delay watching your videos. Life and work have been crazy this week. As for this video's topic, I don't have an opinion on it because I haven't thought much about it but I have seen similarities with some Greek/Roman gods and the Norse gods but I see them as different entities. As an example, Thor and Zeus stand very far apart in what they embody apart from thunder. I did know about Tyr and Zeus coming from the same root and Tyr probably having a more centered role in pre-viking time but again, they are so different from one another...

I think Zues is usually paired with Odin, and then Tyr with Ares, Thor with Hercules. Lightning was the best example I had because I had literally just witnessed it, and that's what got me thinking! But the fact that Zues and Odin don't quiet match up to me reads that they are just two very unique deities

@@TheWisdomOfOdin Yeah, I get that Zeus and Odin would be compared because of the allfather role but I went with the aspect they represent because Zeus and Odin are nothing alike on that front. Tyr and Ares I could sort of see the comparison but in this case I went with the theoretical word origin. I can understand that many gods in different cultures could have the same origin and could have been the same in the beginning but they are so different now I consider them different entities. I mean, if we have the Freyja-Frigg debate sometimes just within our pantheon... hahaha. Oh, hey. How are you liking Europe this second time around? Funnily enough, I'll be traveling to the US for the second time to meet friends and visit others for the first time in 10 years.

So I'm definitely not sure on this, but the theory and practise I follow is along the lines of the Greek idea of aspects. The gods would be called different names and fulfilled different niches depending on how they were being worshipped. I think it's quite possible that how a deity appears is dependent on the individual, as mortals can't perceive the true forms of them.

For a long time, I felt pulled towards Greek paganism or Hellenism but never really committed. I would kinda warship different gods at different times, even those outside the Greek pantheon. Not to long ago I had a very strong experience which has lead me down Norse paganism. I was with my friends and we were drinking. I had mead (a personal favorite) and I just randomly started shouting and pounding on the the table with things like "I'm a ****ing viking! All hail to Odin! Hail to the gods!" Which is very out of character for me. It very much threw my friends for a loop but they definitely enjoyed the show.

For this I say you really have to have an understanding of the Indo Europeans and animism. It's the same people with the same religion if you go back far enough. So they were definitely the same gods at that time right? I'd say they wouldn't split into different beings and are still the same god. Just viewed differently because of the lens of culture and climate. Lightning is lightning, and in an animistic faith (all pagan paths) that means the lightning has a spirit. I call it Thor, because I'm a Norse Pagan. If a Hellenist calls it Zeus I'm not going to correct them it's the same god in a different lens. In the end it's the spirit of lightning. Though btw the equivalent of Thor would be Heracles, Greeks and Romans even wore club necklaces like we wear Mjolnirs.

Much like Thor’s hammer ….many Polynesians wear Maui’s magical fisherman’s hook 🪝 In many ways Maui reminds me of Thor or Zeus minus the lightning bolts ⚡️ Also Maui made some stupid decisions sometimes which showed he was almost human…a demigod. Multiplicity abounds, from the vast expanses of the Cosmos beyond even our comprehension down to our smallest microscopic cellular level. This multiplicity is within our world, our psyche, how we relate to ourselves and others; different parts of our soul and personality, different emotions and powers. So why can't different Deities of different Pantheons coexist all at the same time? The notion of "jealous" gods is an immature monotheistic concept contrary to the multiplicity of Cosmos, Nature, and Psyche. The Deities being inseparable from animism means they all exist within our various landscapes, reflecting the unique needs of a people, while also exhibiting the Mysteriousness of our world beyond our comprehension. The thought they can't coexist is only a Hobbesian projection of human nature upon Divinity. So I specifically worship and relate to the Pantheons of my heritage (South Germanic and Celtiberian), while knowing all the other Pantheons "exist" and are just as "real", and as diverse as various peoples and land-spirits are. Your analogy of the shamanic World Tree (knowing that each tribal culture had its own "shamanic" tradition) is especially apt since cultures worldwide spoke about their Deities symbolically inhabiting some Axis Mundi or central point, whether it be a World Tree, a high up mountain, higher realm, etc.. Yet present within this world at the same time and beyond limitations.

I thought one of the ten commandments said not to put other gods before him. Did god just decide that that specific group wasnt allowed to worship his son as a higher power? Doesnt this imply that god wants people to worship him over his sons? Why in greek/roman mythology does god eat his kids if he wanted them to be, yknow, alive and worshiped? What about things like borr having a father (buri) and a grandmother's (adhumla)? Does god have ancestors? If the bible says every nation gets a son of god, what about rome? Rome got, what, three i think? Zeus, Jupiter, and Jesus, all 'sons of god' in your eyes, yet all in the same nation. If god is Borr, then what about odins mother Restla, or her parent Bolthorn, or any of Bolthorns siblings (there are many), what about ymir, who, if god was borr, would be significantly greater than God in age, power, and was killed by Gods son Odin? What about how all of the fathers of these princes all dying in there stories? Did god fake his death and then just decide that some random people should know the truth and worship him and him only? What about his pantheon of angels? Are they on the same level as the princes? If they arent, are they stronger or weaker than those gods? What about devil/lucifer/satan, doesnt he fill the same role as hades, pluto, hel, ammit, thanatos, anubis, garm, cerberus, etc etc? Are they all the same person, and if so, why is their history and stories all different? Lucifer an angel banished from heaven, hades one of the princes of god (if zeus is one, his direct siblings are too) that counts the dead, thanatos (who is one of the titans, who in this version would be gods siblings) kills people, garm who gaurds the realm of hel, etc. Point is, none of it makes since in this interpretation, it makes much more sense if you take into account when the religions were created, what order, what influences they had on eachother, and their function to the nations you mentioned earlier. For example, Norse mythology is far younger than greek mythology, and was created in a place not so far from where greek mythology comes from. It is very likely that the father-son, son killing father, and common idea of our rulers vs the rebellious alternatives, are probably just very easy ways to make stories dramatic, as an example, star wars. Star wars has the empire, the bringers of order and peace through violence, led by Darth Vader (well not technically, but for the sake of the point, and in the original trilogy he might as well have been), a feirce ruler who punishes those that defy him with destruction. The Jedi are the old ways, and they are more in touch with nature, and directly go against the empire, however by the start most of them have been wiped out, with only a few powerful ones remaining. Darth Vader himself is actually a former Jedi, and his son is Luke, who brings the return of the Jedi, who brings a new hope to the galaxy, now must fight his father, for the fate of the galaxy depends on it. Now why did i just describe starwars poorly? Because the narrative beats at a base level are the same as most religions, while not being based in religion in any way. In Norse mythology, the king of the aesir, odin, comes from the jotnar, a race of powerful yet mostly peaceful beings all with a deep connection to nature, and through his quest for control, wages war on them as the aesir, and he wins, becoming the king of the nine realms through violence and betrayal of his ancestors, and yet the few jotnar that remain are what ultimately bring the downfall of the aesir in ragnarok. Notice any similarities? Religions are formed from gullible people just getting a little too deep into their favorite stories fandom, and then telling other people, that trust them to tell the truth, that this is true and if you dont believe it you will be smited or something, and then they do the same, and so on and so on. Eventually as the story becomes common knowledge, and peoples lack of ability to disprove it, creates people trusting in it, and accepting it as fact. Also it is proven that pretty much up until Christianity, atheism was more common than other religious beliefs and the reason why it looks like they were so obsessed with it that they talk about it more than their actual history is because of how widespread and well known the stories were. For example, most ancient greeks didnt believe in the greek mythos, yet most of their paintings and art depicted it. To them, it could be compared to something like the marvel movies today, where the amount of art, books, movies, shows, figures, posters, etc, imply that we worship the avengers, or something, when in reality most are just entertained by it, while a few become obsessed with it, and treat it like gospel. Anyway, thats my disection of your comment, spiraled into an explanation of mans religons compared to the myths of todays era, movies.

Please someone explain to me that why it is considered plagarism / copying when the Romans take Zeus and the gang and rename them Jupiter and the gang. And yet when the Romans take Jahwe and name him Deus, or when the Germans name him Gott, or the English God, or the Russians Бог and so on... That is somehow not considered plagarism. That is considered "the spreading of Christianity".

The easy way I say to explain it is how Neil Gaiman does in his literature American gods how all gods exist if someone believes in them and they get more attention if more people believe or get more faded if people forgotten about them

I think the gods are specific to different areas. Like different places on earth are basically different worlds so why wouldn't they have their own gods?

Here’s another great similarity, all religions worship the cube as the shape of creation out of sound. If you look closely you will see the Cube of Metatron and the flower of life on all religions, both Norse and Judaism have the same symbolism in the form of the cube.

Like for example if you were to fold an cross you would get an cube. Cubes have 8 edges and that number is seen in the buddhist symbol Dharmacakra. Another weird thing is that saturn has this odd hexagon shape on it's north pole, and hexagons can be seen as a cube if you imagine lines going to the center from every other point..

From my understanding, the Greek Gods and Norse Gods are NOT the same. There may be some similarities, but there are FAR more differences, and I think the biggest of those can be summed up in one word: humility. The Greek Gods, for the most part, do not give a single flying fuck about humility and being humble. They just do as they please and they don't care who gets affected (usually in a negative manner) in the process. The Norse Gods, on the other hand, seem to prioritize honor and wisdom above all else. They seem far better at tempering themselves and putting focus on being humble in life and practicing humility in a lot of life's aspects. And I think a lot of that has to do with Ragnarok.

I almost can't help but to think that all the gods of the elements and such are really just embodiments of their respective planets/constellations. One example is in Christianity, (they won't reveal this), Lucifer is Venus, Satan=Saturn, the "sun/son" of god etc makes it all just sun worship in the end. It's basically worshipping the celestial cycles for rain, fertile crops etc. We were in the Piscean age for the last 2000 years so of course the Catholic church would really venerate Dagon, not Christ as it may seem. Even so it may have a more Egyptian connection should one dig deeper into the linguistics and patterns of the stories told. However, that's not to say if this is true, that planetary systems don't have their own cosmic force that affects us because it most certainly does. My issue also is that how can we actually be sure "Thor" or "Zues" actually answers us out of billions of people? I want to dive in to all this but it's hard to break away from the Agnostic mold.

You may also add to this polish pre-christian Perun God of thunder. We have had a global culture and a country called Anatolia including todays England. Written history is wrong, the evidence is proving it innacurate. Cheers

I’ve always thought all the gods are the same gods. Including Buddhism. Our god is someone’s allah. All these deities are angels and spirits. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Forsure Thor an Zeus are 2 totally different entities nothing alike at all except for the fact that they both utilize lightning. Some people equate Odin with Mercury BUT Saturn/Chronus also i similar to each other. Really i think they are all their own enties and domains. Thats my take theyre ALL badass ( i follow Helas Paganism). Good video dude 👍. Also i imagine Norse paganism to Germanic paganism is the same as Greek paganism to Roman Paganism that is true tho idk what do u think?
