Still amazed BOTH(!) of these games came stateside. I'm sure the content went over 95% of the consumers of them. Especially in the 90's without internet. Good gameplay alone wasn't always a deciding factor for publishers bringing games over the pond, as tons of them were missed. Truly amazing.

I like that these games have a "block" ability. It gives you another option on how to avoid damage so you aren't always swiveling your aim around.

I discovered it 1 year ago and played it with my brother, we beat it after several sessions, and it was awesome so I bought it for my collection. Then we checked Pocky and Rocky 2 but ...we got disappointed as it wasn't like the same gameplay or Shootem up mechanics. I'm sure it is an awesome game but a different genre now, so maybe I'll check it out later when I feel like it

never played the original Pocky and Rocky but I picked it up a rom of it a while back (late 00s or early 2010s maybe?). I loved it, I wasn't expecting much from it but it is probably one of my favorite SNES roms I had in my collection.

In case you’re watching this video in 2023 or beyond in order to purchase both of these titles you’re looking at minimum $150USD for P&R1 and $450USD for P&R2, cart only. If you want complete in box copies expect to spend well over $1000USD.

One of the early levels of Pocky & Rocky 2 reminds me of that final scenario of Metal Gear Solid 3, with the white flowers/plants... My favorite is the second but both are just great game for pure fun and japanese wierdness!!!

This game is the closest I can find to a sequel to Mysterious Murasame Castle. In that game, you play as a samurai who rescues princesses (I think six in total) and throws paper talismans, which change into fire and shurikens with power ups. You can deflect in coming projectiles from enemies by with a sword too. It's on the 3ds virtual console.

I know one can emulate but generally speaking over $300 + for the pair of them. Hard sell if you ask me. They look really good but the price point is a deal breaker.

My grandpa bought my brother and I pocky and rocky at a yard sale around 94 or so. We love the game to this day and will not sell it. Unless it’s for 10k or more some day. It’s crazy how rare this cartridge is.

I love the Pocky & Rocky games, I found a SFC version of the game which is more than playable to me. If I can find the 2nd game for a decent price I will more than likely jump at the chance to own that game too. My only complaint is the face that each version of the game is so different, for example you mentioned the cut-scene removal from the PAL version it was sad to hear that but its ok I am sure someone has got a ROM hack out there fixing that fact.

Removed scenes are more common that one would think on PAL games due to support for multiple languages being applied. Something had to go.

I played the PAL version on an emulator and it has the cutscenes but there was no text.

Which is super annoying for us British gamers. I mean I can understand it would be somewhat more expensive to make a UK only PAL run with such scenes included, but it's a let down. Then again I discovered emulation as a teen, along with the Final Fantasy games which weren't released here (and as a little girl I'd only owned a Mega Drive anyway) 😄

pixel girl I think the PAL Version of Super Metroid is another example. There are options for German & French. Yeah, I hear Europe missed out on many of the RPG's. I don't care about the genre that much though compared to when i was a kid & played pokemon all day, as they're too slow for me these days. The Mega Drive/Genesis had Phantasy Star & Shining Force though.

I'm so glad I had Pocky and Rocky as a kid, considering the price it goes for. I always thought of it as more of a bargain bin game as a kid though. It sure was fun though. My brother and I used to play Co-op all the time but we'd never get past the 2nd level.

The Natsume name on the box and cart may have something to do with the SNES and SFC versions going for insane prices. Most of Natsume's games tend to be expensive, save for Abadox on NES, and Puzzlre Bobble 4/Bust A Move 4, which Natsume didn't make, but brought to the US for Taito for PS1 and Dreamcast. Pocky and Rocky of course was originally a Taito series, at least the first game was Taito made, and appeared in arcades as Kiki Kaikai (the SFC versions also go under that name as well). Of course Kiki Kaikai arcade is available on Taito Legends 2 for PS2, X-Box, and PC. It was also in the Japanese Taito Memories collections (volume 1 Joukan, the first release of the 4, had to look at my copies of all 4 to confirm). I was lucky to find a cart only Pocky and Rocky 2 a few years ago locally, $25. I doubt I ever get that lucky enough to find the first game cheap too. The games thankfully, are anything but bargain bin games due to how high quality they are in terms of fun and replay value.

Odd he don't talk about the block attack when you hold it. I mean that is an other difference between pocky and rocky in the 1. Pocky if you hold long enough the block attack will start spinning and can move while doing damage to every one who enter in contact with her. And rocky will turn to a statue but won't be able to move. He will still do damage too. And won't be able to be pulled in the water on the raft by the kappa in this state.

They did like a updated re-release of this game in 2022 called pocky and Rocky reshrined. You should review that and compare it to the SNES original.
