Not actually. People can try to compare the samurai with any other group in the world and they will always fail because the complexity of the samurai kind is far beyond that. It doesn't matter how much we study them, we'll never fully comprehend.

Finished, in a day, I was unable to stop after starting reading :)) Different time period different mindset but the life were not impossible and if we look at it now,what is in Japan and what is in EU,USA,China,Korea etc we can note a lot's of result including this behavior. Europe were not that far in terms of "Evil" just different clothes and even the book says, different times. The end results are important and my personal opinion on this is that I would still prefer Japan over Europe. Now the only question I got and I would love to have it answered from Mr. @AntonyCummins , were the Shinobi/Ninja with the same mindset as the Samurai on this matter or they were on another levels. Thank you

Really the only problem I could have with this book is a common problem with many people who write historical content. It is hard not to do it but just from a bit of this video it seems like you do fall into the trap. The only thing that is good is that you are focusing on some lesser talked about things samurai did. The trap is judging the past from the current prospective. For example child soldiers while you think it's wrong but in reality it was what was done for pretty much all of human history until recently in more modern 1st world countries. You due seem to focus on how wrong it is but hopefully you at least mention that it was a way to survive. The world they lived in was more violent and knowing and being able to defend yourself and fight if needed made sure you wouldn't end up dead. Yes they treated life very cheap in fact there's a reason why in Japan crossroads are considered haunted and even people today tend to not stay around them long. An ingrained fear of death samurai would kill people who crossed paths with them saying they insulted them by doing it but in reality they were just testing some new sword if it was sharp.

From the book "Zen at War" by Brian Victoria, chapter 12 "Unlike China with its long history of government by civil administrators-that is, “Mandarins”-Japan, from the Kamakura period onward, was ruled by a warrior class composed of a Shōgun (generalissimo) at the top, lesser feudallords (daimyō), and the samurai armies they commanded. These early warriors, however, were a far cry from the Bushido-inspired ideal of the Tokugawa period. Instead, as Hee-jin Kim noted, they were “greedy, predatory, ruthlessly calculating, a strict business dealing with little or no sense of absolute loyalty and sacrifice"

Yes the people on the top, the people in the middle or bottom of this chain were not all like that. But than again which aristocrats of their time were honorable people ?
@AnthonySforza2 ай бұрын
So the Samurai were multilayered individuals who fell between two points of a spectrum for the worst case scenario and the ideal? Cant imagine why a publisher wouldnt want to touch that.

The feudal lords would have to be responsible for the Samurai behavior and the culture of Japan during the warring years. The bloody days in the history of humanity.
@miguelitomarques82 ай бұрын
Sadly the world has become soft, especially when it comes to facing the facts. The most fascinating thing that I'm finding out while studying pre-modern Japan is how 'badly' we romanticize it. We live in such a cushioned period in human history that we can't even begin to fathom how things were like back then - especially during Sengoku Period, which was such a 'relative' short period marked with so many changes and too much freaking violence. Hell, even the people of the Edo Period were romanticizing the concept idea of samurai. If it was bad with them, imagine with us.

@JiggaMan12972 ай бұрын
@@AntonyCummins the Islamic state is still a very strange comparison to make… The samurai were families in the professional business of martial arts, with the tradition passed down generations from father to son etc. The Islamic state often uses orphaned kids, manipulates and essentially kidnaps children to make them into child soldiers ready for suicide missions. It’s understandable why that comparison wouldn’t make sense to a publisher.

As a rightwing Texan, the heck are they talking about. To be fair, there is a difference between American politics and Japans. The Japanese Liberal Party is ideologically similar to the Republicans. When you realize that ninja were mostly peaceful and samurai were mostly dishonorable back stabbers, it kind of ruins any romantic notions you might have had about these fantastical feudal warriors and assassins. I mean Antony basically told us ninja were snitches and samurai were cho mo's. Not exactly role models and icons.

@@TheSADHU88 I've literally never heard ANYONE describe ninja as altruistic. Usually its that they are self-serving, which is basically the opposite of altruism. How is it left wing or right wing to talk about death, loyalty and what people practiced several hundred years ago? How is loyalty until death a right wing thing? The Communists surely had diehard fanatics loyal to Stalin, right? Doesn't every government or ideology have hardcore loyalists and fanatics?
