It's even weirder than that, Philips only had the rights to the Nintendo characters, not the games themselves. Hence why the games are not set in Hyrule and Rupees are called Rubies (even though that would be public domain anyway as it's the currency of India) But they only had the rights to Zelda, Link and Ganon with The Legend of Zelda.

The animation of the cutscenes always did seem like there was too much attention given to the fluidity rather than details of the characters, but you're right, they are more the result of a style choice than the lack of talent. On the other hand, there are good reasons why this style isn't seen around much anymore.
@AllardRT3 жыл бұрын
@Orwellian Future Is Now It could be that they weren't given any reference material. I actually suspect they were mostly traditional animators struggling with transitioning to computers, hence why nothing stays on model. They got a bit better in I.M. Meen and then better still in Lord of the Clans.

Oh, hard disagree from me. Even if I'm being really, really generous and not criticizing the character design at all, a lot of the motion is very herky jerky and jumpy, with speed changing arbitrarily within a single motion.
@goopi_eh3 жыл бұрын
@@AllardRT These were Russian animators (who had to make all the cutscenes in around 6 months) and yeah, as a Russian animator in the 90s you'd have only hand-drawing animation skills, since USSR didn't manage to get far enough in computer development to provide anything close to what USA and Japan produced. Even then, Soviet animation in its prime was always loose in terms of character models, so y'all correct, those are the deliberate stylistic choices. Also, IIRC, these animators later founded a studio by the name "Melnitsa" ("Windmill"), which is quite a big thing nowadays, but looking at their first product (Wizard of Oz animated series) you can kinda see the similarities. I miss a lot of details, but it's just kinda fun when people from your country are somewhat responcible for such an iconic internet-culture staple, and I wanted to share the info.

I'm so glad these games got fan remakes because for all of their faults, these Zelda games are among the last to really carry an 80s fantasy vibe. The use of lush greens and browns as well as a certain reverence for strangeness are things the series slowly lost over time. Zelda isn't as light, rugged, and dirty as it once was. Put another way: Modern Zelda is to Jackson's Lord of the Rings as classic Zelda is to Willow.
@RoninCatholic3 жыл бұрын
The thing about people complaining about Rubies as the currency is that's what they were called in the first game and the cartoon and comic adaptations of them. The currency wasn't called Rupee in English until A Link to the Past and wasn't _consistently_ called that until Link's Awakening and going forward. So basically when this game was made there were more existing sources for calling the currency Rubies than Rupees.
@Atlink3 жыл бұрын
The manual called them Rubies. The actual game showed them as “Rupy” or “Rupies”. The manual was incorrect (in 1986/1987) due to the official name being Rupy, but this was then changed and standardized in LttP as Rupee.
@adriansolea44839 ай бұрын
In other languages they're even straight up called rubies to this day. In French they're just called "rubies" which is written the same but sounds different
That whole part about throwing 10 bombs at the boulders reminds me of the red missile doors from the doors in the original Metroid. I remember being completely stuck in that game originally cause I just wrote the missiles off for not working after firing 3 at the door only for a reflecting sound to play. Took me a long time to figure out that I just had to spam it with 5 missiles in a row.

There's an alternative explanation of how Philips was able to use Nintendo's IP that I think makes more sense: Philips owned Ralph Baer's "pioneer patents" from the early '70s, which they acquired via their purchase of Magnavox in 1974. Philips continued Magnavox's practice of shaking down virtually any large company making video games and most of them agreed to pay a licensing fee to avoid a lawsuit. Nintendo resisted and was apparently willing to fight it out in the legal system, but another company tried the same thing-Mediagenic, a.k.a. Activision-and was nearly reduced to ashes in the process. Nintendo decided to settle and (so the theory goes) part of the deal was that Philips would be able to use certain Nintendo IPs for CD-i games. I find this more plausible than the idea that it was part of the deal for the SNES CD, and Howard Lincoln-Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President at the time, and previously the lawyer who helped them win the Universal trademark infringement case against Donkey Kong-was recently asked about it and said it jibes with his admittedly fuzzy memory.

I love the YTP videos based on this game as the cut scenes are something to see to be believed. Though the stylistic level design was more of an art being put first but no communication to the GamePlay Programmer and this is clearly seen with some objects on screen not clear if they are meant to be jumped on or to be avoided. For example, the rocks in the waterfall scene, some you just fall straight through and it is not clear if this rock can be stood on or jumped to and others you fall down because the level designer just didn't make all the rocks as platforms.
