We agree! The sustainability of our fisheries is very important to us. A lot of people gripe about reduced quota share, but its to ensure future fishermen have the opportunity to harvest them.

Hauling from the side seems to be working really well. What makes that better than from the rear? I know you said mom didn't like hauling from the rear. Is there some risk associated with that?
@EISAlaska4 ай бұрын
It is working well. Several differences between side and stern hauling. In windy and rough weather you can't turn on the gear when pulling off the stern. One has to pay very close attention when hauling so tangles don't get sucked into the prop. Also if you get snagged on the bottom there is no way to spin on the gear and work it loose. Hauling from the side really has no drawbacks and is much easier.
@GoldVP...4 ай бұрын
I do love this setup on the side. Was leary at first, because i was so used to your back end, now its crowded on the side with me there lol 🍻❤️ Nice set. Oh boy the first few were sure dark. Why so dark, compared to the others?

Thanks again Gents for bringing us along, that was a nice haul. Can I ask if you could explain a little how the "grade"(more big fish in the hold I guess?) influences the prices(if any)? Thanks James
@EISAlaska4 ай бұрын
Thanks for joining us James. Grade is reference to fish size. Head off, gutted fish are sorted by size. The split is 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 and 60 up. For the most part larger fish commanded a better price with a range of $.50- $1 between large and small. As of late it has been the opposite with smaller fish getting a better price.
@jamesa41244 ай бұрын
Much appreciated for the explanation. Cheers @@EISAlaska

Do you ever get your long line caught in the wheel? And if so, how do you deal with it and that frigid water
@EISAlaska4 ай бұрын
Only twice in 15 years, when we were hauling from the stern. You know the second it happens and if your quick and pull it out of gear it will only get a few wraps on the prop. We get the two ends up and cut the line as low as possible. Then it is back to town and get on the grid so it can be removed.
@williammcdonald32934 ай бұрын
When you catch large halibut do you get a premium price for them? TY for showing us those jumbos.
@EISAlaska4 ай бұрын
Hi William. There is usually a split in prices and sometimes larger fish fetch a higher price, other times it is smaller fish that are worth more per pound. The split in pounds is 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 and 60 up. This is for dressed/ head off. The range between high and low end is usually $.50- $1.00.

Guys why have you not got a chunk of cork attached to those GAFFS ,then they would float ,
@EISAlaska3 ай бұрын
Excellent question David, it would take a good chunk of cork to keep them afloat which would make them bulkier, unwieldy, and also interfering with hanging them off the rail or bulwarks in a convenient spot to grab. We’re pretty good at keeping ahold of our gaffs, lose ‘em once in a blue moon though. 😅

Tourists should be catching the fish bring more money for the state for recreation
@EISAlaska4 ай бұрын
Commercial fishing puts more money into the state economy. It is passed through many hands countless times as we purchase supplies for our vessels, pay moorage, crews, hire mechanics and welders, etc. It also fuels the processing sector that has thousands of workers that also contribute to our local econony. It is what keeps our coastal communities alive. Tourist money quickly leaves the state as many business cater to them only and pack up and leave at the end of the season taking the profit with them.

@@EISAlaskawe're going to agree to disagree I just think the boat should be fishing more offshore. We can talk about this to we are blue in the face. I am a supporter of what you guys are doing
@EISAlaska4 ай бұрын
@toddstauffer7680 Well, I think we can agree on that point. I appreciate your comments and respect your opinion and we also are thankful for your support. While we don't really venture far offshore due to the size of our vessel and type of our survial gear and liferaft we do travel far from port, often 12 or more hours that puts of far beyond what most recreational or charter operators are willing to travel.
