Are They Cheating at Risk Again?

For todays episode I am playing a progressive game on Turkey.
We encounter some suspicious behaviour and the potential of collaboration. We will never know for sure and I am decidedly disinterested to have the conversation about whether or not they were indeed collaborating. Take it or leave it.
I like to think of it as the evildoers are punished ;) and leave it at that.
I share some strategic thoughts for the game of Risk: Global Domination.
Settings are:

Part of the YT algorithm, after some tests I conducted with friends, is how fast a person clicks on a video after they appear in their field of vision on the app. Cheating videos, at least for Chess related videos, have one of the fastest click rates. And seeing the comment above me, looks like we are many coming from chess youtube.

Guaranteed it’s rampant. Have had a couple of fixed world maps recently where I had strong concerns based on moves been made and similar timing to act. I was playing so well in both but one particularly, and it’s both frustrating and soul destroying ish when you realize it’s happening and other than forwarding a collaborator report, what is being done by the developers. Are they actively following up on reports and keeping an eye on similar accounts playing multiple games together. Have they any way in their back office to cross reference if this is happening, and what’s more if anybody out there has made grandmaster as a result. In fact is it easy to spot if its happening because all someone has to do is constantly set up new accounts so as to aid one particular account. Should be a rule One account, One person. Risk is a great game and like with most sports and games fair play must be sacrosanct. Love the channel Pete, keep up the good work. Very informative and entertaining. Even love your nuggets of wisdom in life. Your love of Risk, and dedication to creating great content will lead to great success for you I’m sure.

2 or 3 years ago I used to cheat on France Fixed with 2 accounts. I remember getting away with it for less than a month (I was playing almost every night) and gaining the Grandmaster rank on my main. When you get reported and caught your punishment comes in the form of a strike 1 suspension and they explain if you cheat again the penalty for strike 2 would be permanent account ban. I play legitimately nowadays-- that's the best way to play. Cheating to win was more tedious than satisfying in comparison.

It's tough to say for sure what is being done by the Devs because they don't talk to us. I would imagine there would be a consistent way to autoflag and prevent the same accounts from playing with eachother multiple times within the same period. This would seem to me to be a far more efficient system than waiting for community reports and sifting through them.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy poker companies have some very strong anti-collusion algorithms that are automated and very effective for online poker, risk isn’t as high stakes but I’m sure the company can implement some fairly simple functions

Nice one for being honest about cheating on France, and great to hear you were flagged, warned and mores to the point addressed your behaviour. Easy to see how you would be caught with just two accounts, which means more is going on in the background by SNG to protect game validity. I do wonder though if 1 or more players is found to have been cheating, in games they have won, what happens? Are they demoted and what's more are those that they have cheated against retrospectively awarded points so that their ranking points are a fair reflection of there ability and willingness to adhere to fair play

Hi Pete, So what can i do about this collaboration problem ? - 1 player caps in the middle (europe advanced) and keeps breaking players who are not part of the collaboration - 2 players cap on one side of a connecting continent , and this way protecting each other - turn 2 or 3 one player already gets like 23+ bonus troops per round, but you cannot get to him because his friends have cleared you out of the surrounding areas - then the other 2 players who are part of the collaboration keep breaking continents and keep deploying troops in the continents of the players who are not part of the collaboration -then when you finally clear them out and obtain the continents bonus, all the sudden the 23+ bonus troops player comes rushing in with a big stack and crushes all your troops ( and all this time i have not seen him once) -then when you have obtained the bonus again like 3 rounds, he comes storming in and leaves again - so i jump of my capital and spend all my remaining units, so he can take the kill, because its like 2 hours later already - but then nobody kills you and they lock you in, keep fortifing, just waiting for you to leave, so it costs you ffa points This keeps happening, and every time its the same M O , but with different player names. They only play to bully other players like me. What can i do? I report the players, but it keeps happening.. Gr Roy

Just discovered your channel, and have watched a load of your videos the past week - Risk is a fun game, and they've been entertaining to watch! One question though - is there no rank matching with this game? A grandmaster being matched up with all low-skill players doesn't seem like a great setup for anyone.

Since the population of grandmasters is so small it would take forever to get a game to fire with that kind of rank matching. The way I would set it up is it should take a lot longer to reach the top level, noobs should become almost worthless to top players. But then it also should take a lot longer to fall with losses.

I am very new to this. And you have probably already answered this. But what is the difference between collaborating and them just being allies?

It's not an exact science and you can never know for sure. In this case it strikes me as one player using two accounts because they both move at the same speed and behave the same way. Take bonus, don't break friendly collabing neighbour, always break everyone else.

it doesn't quite look like blue and red are the same person, as their movement speed is quite different (red is a lot slower), but it definitely looks like they teamed up in some way, maybe they are two friends or something like that, and talking to each other in discord or whatever, that could explain why both of them took quite a while to start doing anything at the beginning of their turns...

Enjoy your vids which got me interested in playing. The cheats don't even bother to be clever anymore. I'm taking a break for awhile to see if the devs can turn things around. 6 player world domination classic fixed: Two players make no effort to claim territory and only farm cards in Asia to grow into large 1-stack armies. Once the zones are somewhat settled, one army slams into Europe and the other into NA. Then the turtle in AU inefficiently mops up the crippled players. The AU player happened to be a "Master" while the two goon armies "Beginners" (surprise, surprise).

Just because two players choose not to attack one another because they know they are the biggest doesn’t mean anyone is cheating, it just means they are killing the other players, while getting big, before going at each other. If red and blue were collaborating, blue would have killed you at 25:00 11 stack against your 5 singles territories and removed you from the equation.

Thanks for your entertaining and informative videos. In my first three games I lost two to obvious cheaters (won the third). After that I just gave up on Global Domination and played single player. I'll give it another try though.

The best things you can do to mitigate cheating is play automatch or host your own games and kick people who might appear linked (same flag, joined at the same time etc)

Depends on the settings you play. There's the most in classic fixed which is the most commonly played format. Less if you host the game and or use automatch. Cheating in progressive still happens but it's much less common.

Hi Pete, The reaction below was also mine. So i wanted to tell you, i made a new Risk account, wrote down the names of the people that seem to be collaborating, blocked them from coming into my lobby and guess what : within 2 days i reached rank master about 20.000 ffa points. All the sudden i had totally different (normal) game play lobby's. And now it seems that they have figgered out that my new account is me, and again i am getting confronted with the collaboration issue. Making it nearly impossible to win. So i shrunk to about 17.500 ffa points. They seem to have about 50 different combined accounts so far (or is it possible to keep changing the player name ???). Looks very much like i am being targeted, but i don't understand why?? Gr Roy

I asked the same question some videos ago. Basically when a human opponent attacks (or even Pete himself), you can see white arrows indicating possible objectives. When bots attack the territories glow but no arrows appear. Hope it helps :D

@@MrHollywood1717 That is only for a bot from start of the game, not a player that leaves. When a player bots out, you can tell either by the arrows as blackest33 said, or by clicking the profile and it will tell you they are offline.

I must admit that I've played General Ong before and have notes from the game with him. Notes say: "Bad neighbor. Nonsensical attacking my position and not others." As typical, the administrators wrote back and said there was no evidence of collaboration.

In this case it is very obvious but I wonder in what capacity teaming is considered rule breaking in this game. Teaming, as in we kill everybody else on the map first to secure 1st and 2nd as long as it is not advantageous to turn on each other, can obviously be a winning strategy. Pete has expressed that idea many times in his own games. So where do you draw the line between someone just being bad at using teamwork for success and someone teaming up beforehand to cheat a win.

As much as I find Pete extremely entertaining to watch (I discovered him like 2 weeks ago thanks to the god-algoritm), I have some issue with his voice. It goes from low-murmuring to laughing loud as hell. I don't want to hamper his style, but sometime it's hard to follow and find the right volume is annoying (expecially when your mothertongue is not english). On one hand, I understand he makes the videos for fun and he probably doesn't want to sound "artificial". On the other hand, expecially now that his channel exploded, it wouldn't hurt to adjust his audio levels a bit (either speaking louder/clearer or through filters). Just a though :D

I’m one of the many, many former board game players who saw the Winter tourney and started playing online. I think the current prog meta is a slight alteration to the 3 position strategy: also “slowly take a bonus”. Even one round late makes you appear weak, but the 2 exterior positions make it difficult for opponents to line up the kill.

Hi, i have been playing Risk global domination for about a month now on my mobile. I constantly get into lobby's where people are obviously collaborating. Mostly 3 persons are teaming up. I don't now if i am a grand master, but i do now that i am a decent player. But because of this collaboration issue i am not abled to get above the expert rank. I have reported these cheating players multiple times, and as a result i got banned for 24 hours ?!? So not only do they collaborate, but also they are shamelesly teaming up reporting other players like me. Gr Roy

They may have not known each other, but it was apparent that they were teaming. Alliances were not turned on so they had no excuse. They probably didn’t hit each other because they don’t know how to play prog. They both kept taking continents. So they probably got mad at you and green for not playing passive. I would rather play only against grandmaster than ass players that don’t know the game.

Can you explain what's special about progressive? Do you get better cards if you hit different opponents? Like match 3 different ones? But they still had green, black and white for a long time.

@@_APV_ no in fixed the cards only give 4 troops for three of the people cards. 6 troops for three horse cards. And 8 troops for three artillery cards. And 10 troops if you have one person, one horse, and one artillery card. But in progressive every time a person turns in a set the cards become worth more. It multiple. If you watch a couple of Pete’s vids you’ll start to understand.😉
