So on a Green Day forum, some commented on the pedals saying "The FOD is the same circuit. I dont own the FOD but I have used both side by side. The only real difference is that the FOD has a switch for a Mid Scoop, Flat or Mid Boost. The DD only had Mid scoop and flat options via a button rather than the switch." And then Green Days tour manager and close friend of the band came in and replied " This is correct! Yes the FOD is exactly the same pedal, we just put a three position mid switch in place of the scoop button. There will be new dookie versions later this year. bill" So yes, there's some proper confirmation

for what it’s worth, they coulda lost the copyright to the “Dookie” or green day tie in, so copied the pedal, and used 3 letters (that can’t be copy written) that happen to be the last song on the dookie album “F.O.D.”

This is bizarre. I was literally just searching to find out if they were the same pedals and I couldn't find any solid confirmations. Lo and behold, this video came up and realized it was just uploaded. A pretty awesome coincidence. On my decent computer speakers, they sound pretty damn similar to my ears. It's nice to know I can buy the FOD and not shell out a lot of cash for the Dookie album cover version. I think I also prefer the toggle switches over the button. Great demo and thanks for putting the debate to rest (for now).

Haha...wow...I’m glad we put the video up when we did!! They are definitely the same circuit...I think the EQ is ever so slightly different but that may just be different potentiometer tolerances etc...or possibly the 3-way toggle switch vs the 2-way toggle...not sure if that would have an effect on the overall EQ?!? But the Dookie sounded ever so slightly less harsh than the FOD...but like we said you only really hear that stuff if you have them both there!! Thank you very much @tvrealities

I got my FOD recently. It's a good pedal. The three-way toggle is useful and the tone control is unique in that it doesn't go to extremes like most - it's done in a way that lets you really hone in on the sweet spot instead of being ultra-sensitive like they are on many pedals. Internally there should be a couple of trim pots for fine-tuning the "crunch side" (blend fully counter clockwise) gain and volume. Mine seems to have come set very low-gain and I'm not digging that ultra-clean sound, or much of the blended tones either. However, online advice says that if you up the crunch gain via the internal trim pots, then the blending starts sounding more GreenDay-esque. I'm sure that's dependent upon the strength of the signal you're feeding it. Which brings up the main failing of these pedals - internal trim pots that need to be external if you want to use this pedal with different guitars. You'll constantly be wanting to adjust the 'crunch side'. Ugh. MXR, you listening? Or maybe this was your plan all along? Get us to buy and fight for a few years over a limited run. Then get the stragglers to buy the FOD until sales dropped, only to finally put out a version that has all controls external. C'mon MXR. You've been in the business too long to not realize these things. M1 Audio has been around for years showing you how to do it right. My final thoughts on this pedal: the right amp or right Marshall in a Box pedal with the right pickups will get so you close to GreenDay you needn't bother with this guy, although he does sound pretty damn good. My Greenday tone comes from a set of GFS "Dream 180's" going into and OCD or a Exotic BB-Preamp clone into pretty much any tube amp set on edge of breakup. Use the pedals for the Marshall squish and feel, dial in the amp to get the tube warmth. The GFS Dream 180 pickups are excellent and nail the classic Greenday tone (which is pretty much the same tone as Joan Jetts and The Donnas, etc, which is pretty much humbuckes into a Marshall - nothing complex). Hell, the guitarist in my band can nearly nail Greenday with his OCD and his Strat when playing through his Fender Deluxe.

Well, the dookie drive circuit was just too good to not use in a regular pedal and thus, I think the M251 in the regular series was born. Named FOD, since it needs a name and well... Fans know it's named after a song, but it can stand for: Famous Over Drive.

I think the "unscooped" setting of the Dookie falls in-between then flat and boosted settings of the FOD. I also think the Dookie had more output. But they sound very similar. If one doesn't want to pay for the Dookie the FOD should do very nicely.

About the amps they're based on: modded Marshall Super Lead's. Nothing wrong with that. Bogner and Friedman all make amps like that still. And a Peavey 5150 also is a modded Super Lead. And Soldano. Which brings us to pedals like the Wampler Pinnacle, LPD Eighty7, Seventy4, Bogner Ectasy Blue (Mini), Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret, Origin Effects Revival Drive Hot Rod Edition (Compact) and Friedman's Small Box for a 50-watt Super Lead-in-a-box. Certainly used in all rock styles: from bluesrock to black metal.

FOD means F@€K Off & Die! It’s a track on Dookie. I’m on the fence about the FOD, I own 20 MXR pedals, my favorite drives are the SB Distortion, GT and Distortion +, I’m hoping the FOD isn’t too heavy metal sounding. Plus I do not want to sound like Green Day.

@davel_ggw3 жыл бұрын
Really tough to pick one over the other... they are extremely similar for sure. At times one sounded more boxy and less amp like than the other, but it seemed to keep switching which one I thought sounded that way depending on the guitar and settings. The biggest difference does seem to be in their respective scooped modes though, where I do prefer the DD, because the FOD sounds too scooped. And I assume you could overcome the lack of the mid boost mode on the DD by just having a mid boost pedal in front of it, which I would always have at least one of in the chain anyway. So... I guess I would probably pick the DD personally.
@tvrealities3 жыл бұрын
The mid-boost is actually permanently on the DD, as seen at 3:18. I think there's just no flat on the DD.
@davel_ggw3 жыл бұрын
@@tvrealities At times I felt they sounded more similar with the FOD set to flat though, but then at other times the mid boost mode did sound closer.
@TSFAHTPS3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure how the mids switch on the Dookie works...it sometimes seemed to sound more like the mid pushed setting on the FOD...but other times it sounded just like the flat mids setting on the FOD...it seemed to kinda do both depending on where the gain and tone were set...

I knew Grit Laskin who worked for Larrivee in the 70's. Back then Dave Wren was working there and they started as apprentices Wren was beyond killer for the inlay and Grit soon surpassed Larivee making guitars. Grit left in within a couple of years & was booked for a whole year in advanced. Wren was offered a King's ransom to work for a high end furniture maker doing inlay.and Larivee ended up behind a desk. At the time I had a part time gig at MES a very small shop that only sold handmade high end. I was the electric guy. I had Valley Arts guitars and Boogie amps as I recall. For a 'day job' it was great. I did not meet Larivee until '87 in New Orleans at NAMM. Anyhow ...I had a WTF moment when I saw the Larivee solid body!!! Really unexpected.

The only difference in tone is how one output impedance is affecting the other being that they aren't in a loop selector like they should be for a truer scientific comparison. Thankfully it doesn't make one sound different enough to discern them and give someone false info that they are different circuits.
