Just bought the toro gas smart stow mower. Couldn’t bring myself to buy the battery one. Folds up and stores just like the electric and doesn’t leak gas or oil, really cool design. It makes cleaning really easy! Yes there are no worries about buying gas or tune up parts, but it will eventually even out when the battery won’t hold a charge and you pay $350 for a new one. Gas is cheaper in the long run in my opinion and you don’t have to worry about the battery dying on you and waiting 2 hours to mow again if you don’t have a spare. Great video though.

The mower costs $500 and a replacement 7.5AH battery will cost $350. Li-ion batteries have a limited number of recharges before they start to lose power. They just seem to always be discharged when I want to use a cordless drill etc.

I have some advise. If you really want to invest in expensive battery tools, buy a light timer with 15 minute intervals. Charge the battery for 15 minutes, then let it rest (turn off) for 30 minutes and repeat. This prevents the cells from overheating. To store the batteries, keep them in the house or at least in a cool environment but not cold. Store the batteries at around a 40% charge between seasons. You will thank me. I have a Kobalt 40 volt mower that was manufactured 1/2014. The batteries are still very usable. Everyone I know that purchased Cordless Mowers had the batteries fail in just a few years. If you only charge to 90% capacity they will last even longer.

You should have used the hedge trimmer to open the rest of the boxes if you wanted to do a thorough review. A hedge trimmer doesn’t need to be as light and comfortable to use as other equipment because you just buy it to use once and then store it in the garage. The blower should lose marks for not being nearly loud enough, that thing wouldn’t even wake up my neighbor.

The problem with battery is that in few months, the life starts getting shorter and shorter. My neighbor replaced his MTD gas mower with Ego and he was very happy the first year and proud of it. Second year I will see him only mowing his front yard and then he will go inside to charge the battery for couple of hours and come back to mow the backyard. The third year, he bought Toro gas mower. All this while, I have been using Snapper gas push mower with 0 problems in 10 years. I do have an hour meter on it and I change oil every 10 hrs and air fiter and spark plug every 20 hrs.

Taryl Fixes All. Very Nice Review!!!. My sister purchased a Toro Recycler 22inch SmartStow (20339) that is just a very awesome machine that is very fuel efficient and makes a golf course quality cut. We treated the bottom of the mower deck with a very heavy coating of WD40 being that the mower was brand new and the grass clippings pretty much fell off when my sister cleaned the mower deck with a water hose. I do not like the idea of never changing the oil regardless of the feel good false security Briggs & Stratton is trying to imply. For my push mowers & small engines, I utilize a 12 volt suction pump that transfers the oil to a container. When the container is full, I take my used oil to Autozone so that it may be recycled. I have two of the Worx GT 20 volt trimmers that perform rather well other than being a bit underpowered for what I ask out of them. That Toro Trimmer was very awesome to say the least. There may be one in my future as well as maybe one of the Toro blowers. Thanks Always For Your Great Videos & Reviews. Now There’s You’re Dinner From Central Kentucky!!!.

It takes me about 4 hours to mow my front grass with a 22” push mower, and another 3 or so to do the side and rear. I usually split those jobs up over a couple days, but I do finish the front in one go. I've thought about getting an electric mower next, but I don't want to have to buy several extra batteries or take long breaks to wait on a charger. Realistically, my next purchase will probably be a used tractor. I like the control and precision of a push mower, but in the hottest parts of the summer, using one gets pretty miserable.

On a hedge trimmer electric is fine I like the older corded ones. As for the leaf blower I'm starting to favor a electic one as they are lighter(at least mine) and work fine for lighter jobs and indoor work. if I need to do anything heavy duty a gas power backpack unit is best . the weed eater and pushmower gasoline all the way. tho my girlfriend has a electric mower at her house she won at a county fair and she likes it as she can mow at 6am before the sun gets hot as electric equipment dont cause noise complaints.i guess there is a time and place for both.

Seems like overall nice equipment. All these tools would work fine for my small yard. The decreased need for engine maintenance could be helpful. However, I don't see the battery powered equipment lasting over years and years. Many of the battery powered mowers have plastic assemblies. I would expect the batteries to last a couple to a few years, but I have had good gas mowers last over a decade with even mediocre maintenance. Then, when one sees the cost to buy a new battery vs. most replacement parts for a gas mower. Not a lot of cost savings from where I'm seeing, maybe moreso just depends on how much maintenance you want to deal with.

I change oil maybe 2ice a year. Plugs? When they quit. Filters? maybe ever 2 or when they start getting restricted. Belts? when they start showing wear. A whole lot of this yearly stuff isn't really needed. You want to spend money? Go right ahead but I just get stuff when needed. Use good oil and keep it changed. That's the life of a small engine. Briggs manuals for the 'L' heads recommended every 20 hours. I use diesel formula 15W40. Keeps 'em CLEAN!

@@lewiemcneely9143 Up here in Upstate NY when I was young we never changed the oil any of our push mowers. The 3.5 B&S or the Tecumseh 3.5. We are talking mid 70's models. All ran fine for 10-12 years no smoke, just added oil. They ran when they were junked. Decks rotted out. Oh and we ran them hard. About 2-2.5 acres and field paths. I currently have a 4.5 B&S from 1991 Lhead and never changed the oil in that either. Probably cuts an hour every week since new. Anyway the only small engines I change the oil in are the 5-17 HP Engines I own. Not concerned with a push mower engine, it will outlast the deck.
@ovp662232 жыл бұрын
Depends on size of yard/area and work needed I guess. For just mowing, I get by with 2 gallons of gas for the whole cutting season (April - October). I have a smaller yard, maybe 1/5 acre? I did a check of costs, doing proper once a year oil change (never had to change spark plug, they last a decade plus unless you're a professional) and air filter once every 2 or 3 years (I just tap out the dirt/dust after every 2 or 3 mows). A gas lawn mower costs me about $12/year to run, up to 10 years or so and then likely some more costly preventative mtc, like replacing gaskets, cleaning head/piston/valve of carbon, etc. Assuming a battery pack costs $350 (Toro 60v 7.5 amphr) and loses capacity after 75 - 125 mows, say after 5 - 7 years, it will cost far more to buy a new battery pack, than the gas powered mower costs me per annum. One $350 battery in first 6 years would blow the cost of the gas powered mower out of the water. Keep this in mind, batteries ARE NOT CHEAP and fail much faster than costly gas powered parts do. The lower amphour batteries are "merely" $120 - $180 but those too will need replaced in 4-8 years, depending on usage, heat and storage methods off-season. To make these batteries run longer, they use a lot lighter parts in all the equipment, which means MTBF is much lower. Something plastic will break in a couple of years or after 50 or 100 uses, it just will. Can it be fixed cheaply? Will these same batter packs be available in five years? If so, will they be manufactured discontinued and third party packs from China that don't last? I have a pair of battery powered hair clippers. After 4 years, the batteries were no longer made. I had to buy a knock of for $75 (the clippers with battery cost just $120 initially), which doesn't last nearly as long per use. My advice, buy a new battery in two or three years (driving up cost of ownership) from the manufacturer, before they're MD'd and they move to a different voltage rating/design. They'll all be changing over the years, not just Toro. Given these battery worries, I don't see these battery powered power tools being of much use beyond 6-8 years. Just won't be able to find usable batteries or the cheaper/lighter plastic will be breaking all over after years of drying out and hardening. I guess I am skeptical of lower costs and very worried about my $1000 investment in a mower, trimmer and hedge trimmer becoming unusable in the 6-10 year range once I can no longer find those voltage/designed battery packs. Can always find gasoline, at least for the forseeable future.

I have cordless tools still going on the original lithium batteries from 2011. I own 2 General Electric 36v garden tractors made in the early 70s that are still going (obviously not on the original batteries). Around 50 years old and never needed new rods, valve jobs, head gaskets or carb issues. Unplug thr charger & turn the key and away you go. Meanwhile I have done carb rebuilds on mowers that were only 2 years old and had to replace sump gaskets on a few that were about 5 years old. If I had to pay a shop to do it, the labor would have been as much as the mower was worth at its age. If the components are of quality materials, an electric propulsion system will outlast an ICE many times over. Many electric motors in industrial plants run round the clock for many years before needing rebuilt, even a good diesel would need overhauled 2 or 3 times to 1 motor. Also, the electric stuff is actually easier to fix if you know what you're doing, contrary to what people think.

Curious what year you bought them, especially a lawn mower and how the battery packs are fairing in capacity. Maybe these things will keep charges much longer than I expect. I am interested in battery equipment it just won't work for me at the moment,I have 3 property's conjoined that takes about 6 hours mowing,2.5 trimming ECT. I like the blower though il consider that one, if I had a normal average home with small yard subdivision type place I would certainly have battery equipment, where can I find this gas powered drill you speak of, that would actually be handy on the farm

3rd That mower looks like a winner for sure! Trimmer too. If only I had a small property. Great video! Thanks for Dinner!

You said that the battery is pretty lite, but didn't mention if the battery gets heavier or not after it's charged.

rick vb ,why would the battery get heavier after its charged? Does a tire get heavier after you put 35 pounds of air in it?

Importantly when using electric motors avoid constant stop start. When an electric motor starts directly on line it draws 6 to 7 times the run current. Keep that in the back of your mind and your electric motors will last much longer.

Well Slippers, it works great til it breaks or the batteries need charged. I even have a saw that uses similar batteries made by a competitor. I did not say who because I am not here for them although the saw works fine for most tree pruning.

Looks like the hedge trimmer bar is a safety bar, it has rounded bulbous ends that protrude out past the cutters, looks safe if it should accidentally hit your body.

It would be good to know what the batteries cost, and what type they are. (I’m assuming they are lithium, because almost all present-day power tools use lithium batteries...) If they are standard size cells, the batteries can be rebuilt for less money than replacement OEM batteries can be purchased for, but such work requires knowledge and skills beyond the abilities of many homeowners. Lithium cells require serious care, because their energy density makes them dangerous in the hands of those who don’t know what they’re doing. If the cells are not self-protected, they can catch fire, and even explode if shorted, or improperly charged.

Don't know about the smaller batteries but the one to power the mower is about 350 bucks , 2/3 the cost of the mower.

My neighbor owns an electric mower. That thing is about as loud as an electric string trimmer. Maybe someday when they make a good size consumer grade lawn tractor... Not giving up my 46" Cub.
