In this video you warn about flushing a water heater that hasn't been flushed in over 3 or 4 years @7:19. This happened to me, after I flushed an old water heater that hadn't been flushed probably ever, I got a lot of sediment out of it, and then it started leaking. I think this warning should have been in your "how to properly flush a water heater" video. This small warning @7:19 is the only warning I've ever seen in any youtube video on this subject. Once I saw it, it was like a lightbulb going off. Ah ha! that's what happened!! I wish I had know about that before hand. This happened to me years before I even knew your channel existed, so it wouldn't have saved me even if you had included it, but it would be a great idea to include it in your tutorial.

We’re in Houston and we we’re dealing with the recent Christmas Eve freezes, and we turned the main water off, to prevent pipes from busting. once we passes the hard freezes 19 degrees, we had a light freeze 29 degrees. The morning we turned back the main water line, the heater made explosive popping sounds and began to leak from the bottom. We assumed it was a pipe that had bursted. needless to say we had to replace the electric heater, it was from 1998… much needed!

Thanks for your videos! I have an odd problem with water hammering. About a year ago the county shut off our water for our community. When the water was turned back on, that's when the hammering started and hasn't gone away. I've tried all the methods common to fixing the hammering (shutting off main, opening the water lines, letting them drain, water arrestor, replacing toilet system, etc) Here's how it works. The main sources are the 3 toilets we have. Anyone off them can cause the hammer IF another source of water is turned on at the same time. I can flush any of the toilets by themselves with no water hammer. I can open any other valve (shower, sink) with no water hammer as long as we don't flush the toilet. The sound appears to be coming from the water heater area (I say area because it might be coming from the pipes behind the water heater in the wall or the expansion tank above the water heater or the water heater itself. We have low water pressure (we are on spring water where pressure is low). I have closed the main valve several times, tried to put air pockets in the system and also tried to drain air pockets in the system, nothing helps. I'm sure I'm missing some of the things I've tried because there have been so many, but that's the bulk of it. I have watched every video and read almost every pos on this issue, so far nothing is working. It doesn't seem to be related to a valve bing suddenly shut off because it only happens when another vale is opened not closed. Maybe it's not really a water hammer but something else, but it sure sounds like a water hammer. Any ideas?

Hi Roger...just had a State electric water heater (EN6-40-DORS 110) installed 30 days ago. It makes the same loud popping & craqcking noises the 15 year old water heater made. I replaced (my choice to do so after a pin hole leak happened in my hot water hose)...just figured it made sense due to age of unit even though it was working. SO I called the State manufacturer and asked why it was cracking and popping when it was brand new and no chance in HECK it had any sediment buildup after 30 days. They said it likely needs an expansion tank. Installer is coming Monday to read city water pressures. Additionally... I have always had small water pipe knock (not a hammer) when running water in the sink in the bathroom closest to the water heater for years... with the old water heater and still with new heater though it seems less to me. Only the sink not the shower or toilet. Maybe city pressure, if high, might cause that too??? I have had no pressure valve leakage with old water heater unit or new unit. If the plumber tells me to add an expansion tank I have concern that it is one more item I need to perform maintenance on. If old unit was working albeit NOISILY for 15 years with no leaking (other than hot water hose) should I just live with the popping and cracking noise that seems more pronounced with the new unit? If I do not add an expansion tank will I damage the unit? Good grief Roger...thank you for reading this far. Any insight is greatly appreciated. To expansion tank or not to expansion tank...that is the question!? Thank you!!! :) (enjoyed your video...thanks for the community service...I like learning about these kinds of things!)

Hello Roger. I rent a home that has a 13 year old gas water heater. It makes a rumbling, cracking and popping sound whenever we use the hot water. Great video. I actually learned a lot from this and other videos of yours. I do have a question. I have extreme issues with lime buildup in the bottom of my tank. It's to the point that I vacuum it about once a year and still burn the lower element out. In this video you mentioned something that keeps the lime suspended in the water. What do you recommend. I wanted to install a softener but I live in a mobile home and the supply line enters the house in the water heater closet so there is no room for one.

You forgot one thing. With a gas water heater, if your drip pan has a lot of condensation built up, it can plug air flow from underneath needed for combustion, causing burner to shut down or high humming sounds like a train going through your garage as it sucks air through cracks. It can also shut down burner when you try and put covers back on after checking and repairing water heater, so clear your drip pan.

Thank you. I just purchased a home and the tank was installed in 2007. I have no idea if the previous owner did any kind of maintenance. With your video, i now know NOT to drain it because of the possibility of those hairline cracks.
@MrWolfSnack2 жыл бұрын
Ironically in a way the thick buildup of sediment will act as a plug against the cracks as the water dripping out of the crack will carry sediment to the crack and latch onto it. Flushing an old tank will remove the sediment, expose the cracks, and it will leak. The key is to flush the water heater every 6 months from new and don't make the same mistakes. Take a sharpie and write the last flush date on the side of the tank if it helps. If you do not have a floor drain in the basement to flush the tank, you would need a powered water pump and a garden hose to manually pump the water to the nearest sink. Buy a cheap metal mesh strainer to put under the hose to catch sediment chunks so they dont then clog up your sink plumbing.
@davidstock27134 жыл бұрын
With conventional water heaters, the usual typical noise infractions are due to calcium within the inner tank. Burner upon combustion is heating bottom plate, heating the calcium deposits next, which the inner tank existing water level being above the existing calcium, is heated partially from the calcium itself, along with burner assistence. Another very common mistake that do it yourselfers/ handymen make, is when they are in the initial process of draining the existing water from the water heater initially to perform flushing the tank procedures. They open the T/P-Temperature/Pressure relief valve to release the vacuum within the water heater, to make it drain in reasonable time infraction. Problem being that if the water heater is aged, so is the T/P valve itself, corroded inside the spring design valve. Will leak guaranteed, upon completion tank at full capacity. Should only touch, loosen, don't even have to remove completely, either cold side supply/inlet, and-or hot side supply/outlet water heater copper/stainless steel water flex lines. Will release the vacuum with effective, but not creating more un-necessary problems.if under 2-years the T/P valve will usually function fine after re-filling the water heater, but still not a good idea as to release vacuum. Only brand new same day set/install due to the T/P valve is new, never touched water to date.

I know it's a long shot but I've got a Rheem water heater (don't know the exact model, sorry, I'm stupid). We're currently, as in right this very moment, having a power issue where it isn't completely out but the amount of current coming through is extremely low, to the point that a typical lightbulb will brown out and barely come on but not really give off any light. At the moment, our water heater is making this whistling, squealing noise. The only comparison I can make is that it sounds like a cricket chirp but constant and uninterrupted, with constant fluctuations in pitch. Is this just the water heater trying desperately to work with the minimal power it's getting or is this a bigger problem?

I'm getting a sound from the tank in the roof sounds like a heartbeat through a stethoscope, it's a 4 in a block and really dislike that the tank is for 2 houses and if anything hapoens downstairs people have to come up here even if it's something silly, but this time I can hear that sound I have never heard before, usually when hot water or downstair uses a lot it makes that sound but no heart beat but constant hum which usually goes away. It's almost June haven't had central heating on for few months and there was some banging downstairs earlier, now I hear this loud heartbeat sound? I turned on the central heating then hot water, the hot tap lets the water out in almost short burts, so must be connected to the sound, the water burts are same speed as heartbeat sound, it's not violent burts but noticeable! Thanks for your information. 👍

So for knocking and hammering (big sudden "bang" sound), our plumber told us (without actually seeing it or hearing the noise) told us that we need to replace it. Our water heater is about 6-years old (Rheem Performance line, 40-gallon tall model). Is it really time to replace it or can it still be repaired? If it's water hammering issue, would replacing a new water heater help with that loud random banging noise? Thoughts? Thanks!

Both were rusted open. Though I only knew about the check valve after I removed it and looked inside. My new check valve slams shut, every time we flush the upstairs toilet (though, not the downstairs) and when the washing machine calls for hot water, (though not cold water like the toilet). I know the noise is the check valve doing its job, but why would these two things caused the water to flow backwards at that point?

Thanks for a great video. As per people saying you should have actual sounds of each potential problem, don't realize you just cant replicate a sound to make a video of them. He'd have to ,in his rounds of customer repairs, video each and every problem to have those examples for you! Imagine how long that would take. My question is as in my case, the water heater is old, I never knew it was supposed to be flushed. It recently starts some banging sounds initially when the hot water is running in the house somewhere, but stops after a while. So, what will happen to this down the road? Will it just stop heating? Will it burst and leak? I dont want it to burst open, but a small leak will drain to the floor drain, if that happened. I hate to replace it now, if it could last a bit longer. All the crap today doesnt last as nearly half as long as things used to! Not to mention 3X more expensive too!

I was led to the understanding that the glass lined layer within the steel tank can develop hairline cracks and miniature fractures thus exposing the steel to the DWS. ~Also your videos have really helped me make strides in my plumbing skills. I 'm truly grateful!

When replacing a heating element if water touches the element nut will that short out the element?

Thanks so much. I turned my gas water heater off for a reno and now that I want to turn it back on it makes lots of extra rumbling, I got worried it might start a fire and turned it back off. I suppose its just magnesium and calcium buildup.

So we did the flushing because my husband was not wanting to take a shower after the freeze because yuck was in the water. I started to hear drip noise on the inside of the heater. It did go away but I just want to make sure this is normal expansion stuff.... going from hot water to extreme cold water filling up the tank. I think my husband has invisible Gremlins that follow him around because every time he tries to fix something it doesn’t always go as planned because now the cold water valve started to drip after filled the tank back up.

I do disagree with having open the wall for a water hammer? You can install them right on the appliance hookups. Usually that will take care of it. And usually can acess the main and throw one there. But ya these video are really good. Especially there is some states of this country with some very lacs codes and can really put out some subpar ideas.

Hey Roger, I just added a video on my profile of what my propane water heater is doing. Could you take a look and comment? It sounds like the same issue other people are having. Thanks.

MisterFixItVideos I left you a message on the video. Sounds like the power vent.

Mine is making a rhythmic water pumping sort of noise. At first I thought it was the water pump on my cat's water fountain, but it's coming from the water heater.

Hi Roger i got a serious question do know if my hot water is making noises at night we have one that pops all the time and we had the lines leaking and rust coming out of the pipes is there a way to contact my local my plumber to see if something is wrong with the heater and the pipes in general I'm scared of getting red tagged as well
@reginaking22464 жыл бұрын
Will that affect the hot water pressure ? Mine is slow and sounds like my hot water line is going to explode.

So should I just ask my apartment complex for a new (its gas) water heater then? Lol because I brought up the issue of the popcorn noises when we ran hot water as soon as we moved it. I felt it just needed to be flushed, but i honestly dont think thats EVER been done, and this is very clearly not a new or even new-ish water heater. And now its squealing after running hot water after 5 minutes

have you had a Bradford white drip on the fire pan for a cold start (condensate)
@RogerWakefield4 жыл бұрын
I’ve really never had any problems with the Bradford White. Control valves in the past but nothing in a very long time.

New A O Smith G12-UT4040NVR 400 On May13 2019 getting very close to the tank I can heard weak sound like the burner is running, but I know isn't as I don't see flames at the burner. could that be the pilot light flame too strong? I noticed pilot light flame are little larger than normal. appreciate your comment.

My sister's 20 year old water heater makes the "rumble" sound. But oddly enough, it happens only once a day and at the exact same time (around 8:00am in the morning). Just once a day... very odd.

I have an electric water heater it whistles quietly every time a water faucet is turned off, happens in both cold and hot.. Does this mean there is air in the tank? Can the air be let out? Thanks! If not any thoughts?
@jessl3402 жыл бұрын
Just means the heating elements are heating up the water.

If a customer has this scale buildup I always make sure to do a hardness test and educate them on softeners
@MrWolfSnack2 жыл бұрын
Water softeners will actually corrode a water heater faster. It eats away the anode rod. I just learned this. To counter the water softener eating away the water heater - replace the stock anode rods with an aftermarket electric powered anode rod. It will charge the water and deter the effects of soft water to the anode.

Hey Roger, I have a gas heater about 6yrs old... Never been flushed... I keep the area dust clean... tonight for the first time, I heard a water sound like it was hitting the floor / sorta like maybe it was hitting the flame?... by the time I got to the tank the noise had stop and there was not a drop on the floor or around it... pipes were all dry, pilot was lit.. but not burning... we hadn't flushed or turned on the water in over an hour at that point... and now I am paranoid!... any ideas? I've listened to a lot of gas heater noises on youtube and have yet to find something similar at all, not even close...

So Im at my parents' house and they replaced the water heater like 5 years ago. As I'm here alone, I here it cycle like a big water leak, around 5pm. They don't have anything timed to come on, nor is there a softener, just this loud purge for about twenty min then it stops...They never flushed. I was reading up on that and thought I read it wasn't as important anymore. But your saying there is risk to doing it now since it's been at least five years?

My water heater is gas and lately when running water in a shower or flushing a toilet, it makes all sorts of noises. The rumbling and sort. I have a hot water circulatory pump also. It’s only about 4 years old. I did a flush and still does it.
