Are we still calling MLS a RETIREMENT LEAGUE?

It's the one reputation MLS just can't seem to shake off. Is it fair to call MLS a Retirement League? Or, is that whole retirement stigma overrated?

More facts: Beckham was still good enough to go on loan to Milan MULTIPLE TIMES. I also think Rooney just left to be a player coach? But honestly, it's a double sided sword. If you bring in "old" stars then everyone thinks you're a retirement league and just trying to put butts in the seats, but if you don't bring in those players then you're not building a fan base in your nation. The trend we are going in, personally, is working. Being a selling league is a good thing because it means we know how to develop talent and we know how to scout. the MLS and Liga MX are basically doing the scouting for Europe and once the player becomes a star we reap the rewards. Keep upt he good work MLS

Hey dude, I'm from the UK. Which of course is home to professional leagues such as the English Premier League (and also the EFL Championship, League One & League Two). But I have to admit I've been watching more MLS than I have EPL. There's just something about it, I just can't put my finger on it. Whenever the MLS expands, I get excited to see who's in it. The league is FAR beyond a retirement league, believe me. Keep up the videos!

The closedmindedness of some soccer fans when it comes to MLS will always annoy me. I feel like most of these people just need to go to a live MLS game and experience it. Hell, I've taken friends to USL's San Antonio FC games and they've had a blast.

@@justthings5923 70%of players in italy's serieA&B has an average of 27 29 and beyond 30 's playing for top clubs there so for the MLS regarded as a retirement league is well of the mark and most of these big names from europe who came to your league were free agents who's contracts run out due to the fact their agents demanding higher wage longer contracts witch most clubs refuse so rather than going to a lesser league in europe why not head of to the MLS a club who would meet he's contract. As a European you're content is the best source on MLS that takes it seriously and treats it like any other league. More people here are slowly starting to see that as well but most still think MLS is just a retirement league which it isn't. Seeing players like Barco and Almiron blossoming in the MLS can only be good for the league and who knows. Maybe it can compete with the NHL in popularity in the future but Pro/Rel would have to happen for that to occur and for the league to unlock it's full potential.

Recently discovered your channel, Canadian here and Toronto FC fan. To answer your question the league a few years back yes was a retirement league but that is no longer the case. I get tired of the Euro snobs, usually dudes sitting in Topeka or Brampton saying oh MLS sucks, it will never be La Liga, Premier League or Serie A. I respond so what, it doesnt have to be. I think the league besides developing North American players should target 2 types of players, one the young players from Latin America just before they go to Europe, and 2 the guys in Europe who are around 27 years old and just not getting enough first team chances. Just look at how successful Toronto was Giovinco (in my opinion the best foreigner ever to play in the league), the man was touted to be a superstar at Juventus in Italy, til some Argentinian guy called Carlos Tevez (yes being sarcastic Tevez is a tremendous player) showed up. Giovinco got relegated to the bench, add on injuries and it became a difficult experience. In comes MLS and says well you can continue to sit on the bench for 70 minutes in Serie A, or you can come here and be the number 1 guy, get paid a lot and live in a superb city with a population of Italian descent, his decision was a no brainer.

When new clubs are popping up every 5 years and the oldest one is from the mid 2000s and absolutely no history. Dont expect south Americans nor Europeans to even start liking that league. I wanted to like the mls but just can't. Football is more than a league. Its more about the clubs age and history. That love for the club and the sport is passed down by grandparents to parents and subsequently to kids.

EPL started in 92 yeah but it was really just a reformation of the English football league, not a straight startup like the MLS was. Comparing any other league to the EPL is stupid because of course no one is touching them. They’re the league with the most money and best tv deals around the world. I think the MLS has done well to get their name out there as much as it has. It’d be like comparing Danish hockey to the NHL.

Matthäus- retired in MLS Nesta- moved to india and retired Ljungberg- moved to Europe and retired Di Vaio- retired in MLS Drogba- retired in USL Kaká- retired in MLS Henry- retired in MLS Beckham- went to PSG and retired Rooney- player/coach for Derby County Blanco- moved to mexico and retired Lampard- retired in MLS Pirlo- retired in MLS Villa- retired in Australia Ibrahimovic- currently in AC Milan Gerrard- retired in MLS Marquez- moved to mexico and retired Schweinsteiger- retired in MLS Ashley Cole- moved to europe De Jong- moved from MLS. Idk where he’s at though Sagna- currently with Montreal So MLS being considered a retirement league is not exactly accurate. But I understand why people would assume that. However, those that are adamant about it and are willfully ignorant are probably the same kind of people who will hate everything the US and canada does. Mostly the US. It’s just unfortunate that we are always receiving hate no matter what we do. Even with being a selling league to send players to a higher level, we will get hate. It’s a lose-lose for MLS.

MLS does need to somehow find a way to bring a world class player that is not over 30. China has done it. So i think MLS can do it if they want. Also some players only care about money, China has proven it. I dunno who, but i do believe MLS will get a lower than 30 world class player one day, and it will be all because of that player's personal greed. This is why i believe that more than Cristiano or Messi, its going to be Neymar the one that will end up at MLS one day.

MLS is a league that's probably the fastest growing because of the experienced players coming through and offering their knowledge. It'd be different if you had a ton of players in their prime, not just Sebastián Giovinco. You're arguments were: 1) we've sold young players to Europe 2) we have young players in mls 3) the old players that come here still sell seats and play good 4) anyone who disagrees is ignorant to the 'facts'

Plus the US does not want to lose their main money makers like American football, basketball, baseball. If mls does what the rest of the world does. Like having 16 to 17 year old playing futbol professionally . Then they might grow even more. But that’s where the US loses money , kids will start to lose interest in basketball , football and baseball. Because they can make money playing futbol and be a professional player at age 16. No more college basketball, football or baseball. The US does not want that. That’s why futbol won’t grow as much as you’d expect in the US.

@Dead Beat thanks for proving my point. The mls will remain a retirement league. USA is not a futbol country. As long as basketball, baseball, and American football are top priority . The mls will never reach that top level that you think it will. Remember you said u enjoy your other sports as well. Futbol playing countries don't care about different sports. Thats why it's played all year long. It's only in the USA where sports have seasons. Basketball season, football season ,hockey season.... etc.

@Dead Beat well, you said you like other sports as well. Futbol playing countries don't care about different sports. Thats the difference. Thats how you proved my point. Futbol is not the top sport to watch in the States. Thats what I'm trying to say basically. So top players come to mls to retire. There is no pressure if your team loses or slacks off . The mls mentality is "it's just a game". Hopefully you understand what I'm saying . And No, all elite leagues are not retirement leagues. Mls, Asian, and Arab countries are known to be retirement leagues. Play with no pressure.

For me I think that it was good for a couple of stars like David Beckham, Thierry Henry, David Villa, and Ricardo Kaka to come to the league only to bring to it attention but when it got to a point where most MLS teams were beginning to fix their focus on obtaining washed up European players who would struggle in an average top five league season only to tear up the entire MLS the next year made me lose respect for the league. I think that after watching Atlanta United for three seasons with their young South Americans and Philadelphia Union promoting their academy players to the first team that every MLS team should start following these examples by giving more opportunities to young talents from the arctics of Canada to the tip of Argentina. It’s for reasons like these why the Mexican league continues to be way ahead of us. They put their focus mainly on academy players and on top young talent from across our part of the globe. Even in Europe they continually practice that concept and they’ve been doing it for decades. All I’m trying to say is that this is literally the league’s fourth decade of existence and it’s time for the MLS to discover it’s own identity and create their own legacy instead of taking old washed up completed talents from Europe. It’s already heading in a good direction with players like Alphonso Davies, Zack Stefan, Tyler Adams, and Timothy Weah going to Europe but I think we need more of that. It’s like you said, more Miguel Almiron’s and less Frank Lampards 🤷‍♂️

No one cares about the average age of players in the league. Its the average age of the decent/good players in the league which is like 32.
@dannytradio
@dannytradio 4 жыл бұрын
Basque FM are you sure about that? Because the average age of the MLS Best XI player is just over 28. And that’s with Zlatan’s 36 bringing up the whole average. That’s one you could’ve figured out. Also Carlos Vela says hi

I mean, I love what's happening with the MLS, but I understand the view of it being a retirement league. Despite this video, I still can't say that it's not. Not saying it's a bad thing, but the label is not wrong to me.

Sorry fam but Liga MX is still on top of the MLS. Maybe just by 1 or 2 placements. But I also definitely don't think either league is a top 10 in the world. Somewhere between 11-15 is fair

i think MLS has a huge potential to be as good as europe if people in america continue to care about it. all they need is bigger revenue. they have great potential to steal all the south american talent before the europeans do.

Soccer is a boring sport and who cares if people from the U.S. or Europe think that it is a bad league. Soccer is a bad sport. NBA and College Basketball, NFL and College Football, Baseball, and Hockey are much better sports. Way, way, way more people in the U.S. would rather watch any of the sports I just mentioned over the best soccer that the world has to offer.

@@MrHoojaszczyk Because most of the world does not have the NFL, NBA, etc. If they did, they would watch that instead. The United States is rich with the best athletes in the world of sport, except for men's soccer, cricket, and rugby. MLS is dropping in viewership already and the soccer fan base in the U.S. seems to be split between those that want promotion and relegation and to mimic how soccer is done in Europe against those who want to see playoffs and understand the need for a stable single entity league.

@@mikerexaccuseasondeveloper2046 Rest of the world does not have NBA and NFL? Check your facts. They do. They have had it for years. NFL even tried to expand into Europe and FAILED because people didn't want to watch that BORING sport. Fat guys chasing an egg and told by a fat guy on the sidelines what the next play is. Just did not catch on :). And as for MLS, they are growing. Remember in 1996 there were 10 teams playing and barely surviving. In 2019 we have 24 teams (3 to be announced) and thriving. Fucking hater:)
