When we’re baptized, we become adopted sons or daughters of God. We become “children of God”. So… does that mean we aren’t children of God before that? And if we aren’t… what are we?
Today, Fr. Mike explains to us how baptism makes us “partners in the divine nature”, so that we can truly call God our Father.

I catechize children age 3-12 and it is terrifying to see the absence of grace in children who are not baptized and whose parents are not seeking it for their child. I see children who cannot look at a crucifix, who say can you take the voices out of my head, and who manifest stomach aches at catechism time. It is heartbreaking. Please pray for the unbaptized.

As a priest who engages in deliverance ministry and collaborates with our diocesan exorcist, I identify that as a form of demonic oppression. Those poor kids need baptism PLUS their families to live an active life of faith and grace! I encourage you to pray a Binding Prayer before class. In an extreme case I met a woman, who was away from the church, for spiritual direction. She was experiencing sudden sleepiness and she said to me, “I’m feeling as if I don’t want to listen to you, Father.” When I raised my right hand and responded, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you, spirit of lethargy, to leave this woman”, she fell to the floor and began to demonically manifest. I myself experience strong sleepiness at times when trying to pray the rosary, or I get a stomach ache. These are simply ways that the devil tires to distract us in the moment when we are trying to engage with God.

@@birettaboy8542 Thank you Father for your suggestion of a Binding Prayer. We pray before the children arrive, but did not think about a Binding Prayer. A friend says she pours holy water everywhere. I can gratefully say the Holy Spirit is moving in our atrium (we offer Catechesis of the Good Shepherd where the Catechist is not a traditional teacher…there is silence and lectio divina and prayer and a place for the children to feel the presence of God. A little one asked me if Jesus was in the ceiling. I responded, yes, Jesus is everywhere. He said excitedly, I knew it!!) We have had 10 Baptisms and 3 Parent Confirmations over the last three years. Children crying because they weren’t able to receive the Eucharist. Praise God! I would suggest all Bishops and priests look into CGS. I taught traditional classroom FF for faith formation and never heard a child say, I love Jesus without being prompted. I hear it constantly in the atrium.

Baptism is the greatest gift my parents gave to me as a 5 month old on 12/21/1958; my mother was Protestant and my father was Catholic yet my mom married in the Catholic Church behind the altar rail in 1956 and promised to raise us Catholic, and she did; she was a huge part of my reversion to my Catholic faith for the last 6 years of her life before she died at the age of 93. Baptize your children and like my mom and dad, be humble and grateful in all circumstances 😊❤️🙏Thank you Fr Mike and thank you mom and dad for keeping your promise to God.

Jesus Christ dying was the greatest gift. I am a part of what the Bible calls church and not a part of Catholicism, because I’m in the body of Christ, which are saved people. That’s what the Bible means by church. Why add on to it and create Catholic, orthodox, and all these denominations that are worthless?
@Davidjune1970
@Davidjune1970 Жыл бұрын
@@alil6547 the apostles and church fathers wrote letters to other churches to reinforce the teachings of Christ. The bible is a compilation of these writings that tell the best version of the truth of Christ the authors had. Before those letters the church ran for decades. Before the bible was canonized the church had been going for over 4 centuries. Tell me how the church functioned without a bible for 4 centuries if it’s the only thing you believe in? Your view of the church’s history has a Protestant twist to it which is perverted. Christ started the church. If you are a follower of Christ you should be in his church and not something else. You need to stop believing the lies you’ve been told and read the church fathers writings, including all the letters that were written the same time as the gospels. 60 AD onwards. You will discover that the universal church has the dogma and traditions these first Christian’s preached and taught. Everything from The 7 sacraments Intercession of the saints Mary’s perpetual virginity and assumption to heaven Apostolic succession Primacy of Peter Peter’s successors Confession to priests Sunday as the lords day And more … all of them church traditions as taught by the apostles. All of them Catholic.

Hi Fr. Mike. Can you please make a new video about why we shouldn't miss Holy Mass on Sunday and importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Both topics in one video, maybe? Sadly I have friends and family who think it's not a big deal to miss Sunday Mass and that confession is not necessary, even though they are Catholic. I'm sure there are many Catholics who think the same. The reason I'm asking you is because you explain everything so beautifully, with charity, but firm in what our Church teaches. God bless you Fr. I was baptized when I was 10 days old, but it wasn't until I was a Church sponsor to an RCIA catechumen that I understood the full weight of what that meant. In one sense, I felt like I was being baptized all over again, but in another, much more glorious sense, I realized the fire of the Holy Spirit had burned within me so strongly because I was His real daughter. Still gives me chills remembering that Easter Vigil. God's wonders never cease to amaze and thrill us.

There are hard teachings that we would like to not think about. Many of us love people who reject the opportunity to become part of God's family. But truth is truth. Fr. It confuses me why some archdioceses/dioceses require a birth certificate before you can even schedule a baptism. My so was already 3 months old when he was baptized because of that whereas in a different diocese, my daughter was only a couple weeks old because we could schedule before she was born. It should be urgent to baptize our little ones so they can be covered by God's grace and become an adopted child of God as soon as possible! Thanks for always sharing these beautiful details of our faith!!

@@DaleSchwanke LOL Gen. 17:12, Lev. 12:3 - these texts show the circumcision of eight-day old babies as the way of entering into the Old Covenant - Col 2:11-12 - however, baptism is the new “circumcision” for all people of the New Covenant. Therefore, baptism is for babies as well as adults. God did not make His new Covenant narrower than the old Covenant. To the contrary, He made it wider, for both Jews and Gentiles, infants and adults. Job 14:1-4 - man that is born of woman is full of trouble and unclean. Baptism is required for all human beings because of our sinful human nature. Psalm 51:5 - we are conceived in the iniquity of sin. This shows the necessity of baptism from conception. Matt. 18:2-5 - Jesus says unless we become like children, we cannot enter into heaven. So why would children be excluded from baptism? Matt 19:14 - Jesus clearly says the kingdom of heaven also belongs to children. There is no age limit on entering the kingdom, and no age limit for being eligible for baptism. Mark 10:14 - Jesus says to let the children come to Him for the kingdom of God also belongs to them. Jesus says nothing about being too young to come into the kingdom of God. Mark 16:16 - Jesus says to the crowd, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” But in reference to the same people, Jesus immediately follows with “He who does not believe will be condemned.” This demonstrates that one can be baptized and still not be a believer. This disproves the Protestant argument that one must be a believer to be baptized. There is nothing in the Bible about a “believer’s baptism.” Luke 18:15 - Jesus says, “Let the children come to me.” The people brought infants to Jesus that he might touch them. This demonstrates that the receipt of grace is not dependent upon the age of reason. Acts 2:38 - Peter says to the multitude, “Repent and be baptized..” Protestants use this verse to prove one must be a believer (not an infant) to be baptized. But the Greek translation literally says, “If you repent, then each one who is a part of you and yours must each be baptized” (“Metanoesate kai bapistheto hekastos hymon.”) This, contrary to what Protestants argue, actually proves that babies are baptized based on their parents’ faith. This is confirmed in the next verse. Acts 2:39 - Peter then says baptism is specifically given to children as well as adults. “Those far off” refers to those who were at their “homes” (primarily infants and children). God’s covenant family includes children. The word “children” that Peter used comes from the Greek word “teknon” which also includes infants. Luke 1:59 - this proves that “teknon” includes infants. Here, John as a “teknon” (infant) was circumcised. See also Acts 21:21 which uses “teknon” for eight-day old babies. So baptism is for infants as well as adults. Acts 10:47-48 - Peter baptized the entire house of Cornelius, which generally included infants and young children. There is not one word in Scripture about baptism being limited to adults. Acts 16:15 - Paul baptized Lydia and her entire household. The word “household” comes from the Greek word “oikos” which is a household that includes infants and children. Acts 16:15 - further, Paul baptizes the household based on Lydia’s faith, not the faith of the members of the household. This demonstrates that parents can present their children for baptism based on the parents’ faith, not the children’s faith. Acts 16:30-33 - it was only the adults who were candidates for baptism that had to profess a belief in Jesus. This is consistent with the Church’s practice of instructing catechumens before baptism. But this verse does not support a “believer’s baptism” requirement for everyone. See Acts 16:15,33. The earlier one comes to baptism, the better. For those who come to baptism as adults, the Church has always required them to profess their belief in Christ. For babies who come to baptism, the Church has always required the parents to profess the belief in Christ on behalf of the baby. But there is nothing in the Scriptures about a requirement for ALL baptism candidates to profess their own belief in Christ (because the Church has baptized babies for 2,000 years). Acts 16:33 - Paul baptized the jailer (an adult) and his entire household (which had to include children). Baptism is never limited to adults and those of the age of reason. See also Luke 19:9; John 4:53; Acts 11:14; 1 Cor. 1:16; and 1 Tim. 3:12; Gen. 31:41; 36:6; 41:51; Joshua 24:15; 2 Sam. 7:11, 1 Chron. 10:6 which shows “oikos” generally includes children. Rom. 5:12 - sin came through Adam and death through sin. Babies’ souls are affected by Adam’s sin and need baptism just like adult souls. Rom. 5:15 - the grace of Jesus Christ surpasses that of the Old Covenant. So children can also enter the new Covenant in baptism. From a Jewish perspective, it would have been unthinkable to exclude infants and children from God’s Covenant kingdom. 1 Cor. 1:16 - Paul baptized the household (“oikos”) of Stephanus. Baptism is not limited to adults. Eph. 1:1; Col. 1:2 - Paul addresses the “saints” of the Church, and these include the children he addresses in Eph. 6:1 and Col. 3:20. Children become saints of the Church only through baptism. Eph. 2:3 - we are all by nature children of wrath, in sin, like all mankind. Infants are no exception. See also Psalm 51:5 and Job 14:1-4 which teach us we are conceived in sin and born unclean. 2 Thess. 3:10 - if anyone does not work let him not eat. But this implies that those who are unable to work should still be able to eat. Babies should not starve because they are unable to work, and should also not be denied baptism because they are unable to make a declaration of faith. Matt. 9:2; Mark 2:3-5 - the faith of those who brought in the paralytic cured the paralytic’s sins. This is an example of the forgiveness of sins based on another’s faith, just like infant baptism. The infant child is forgiven of sin based on the parents’ faith. Matt. 8:5-13 - the servant is healed based upon the centurion’s faith. This is another example of healing based on another’s faith. If Jesus can heal us based on someone else’s faith, then He can baptize us based on someone else’s faith as well. Mark 9:22-25 - Jesus exercises the child’s unclean spirit based on the father’s faith. This healing is again based on another’s faith. 1 Cor. 7:14 - Paul says that children are sanctified by God through the belief of only one of their parents. Exodus 12:24-28 - the Passover was based on the parent’s faith. If they did not kill and eat the lamb, their first-born child died. Joshua 5:2-7 - God punished Israel because the people had not circumcised their children. This was based on the parent’s faith. The parents play a critical role in their child’s salvation.

God the Father is the Father of all whether or not they have been baptized. Hebrews 12:9 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? Everyone has a spirit. The Father is the Father of all spirits whether baptized or not. Upon baptism we become the children of Jesus. This is how Jesus is the Everlasting Father foretold of by Isaiah. All are children of the Father. Those that have entered into sacred covenants and taken upon themselves the name of Christ by proper priesthood authority then become the children of Christ thus being children of God in two ways. Children of the Father and children of the Son.

Question. My brother has 2 kids. Both have not been baptized. The wife doesn’t like organized religion. Plus, they never got married through the church. I’ve heard both the Catholic version and baptists using biblical scripture. My question, even though the kids were not baptized, how should I go about this? I always thought about it symbolic cause humans use a lot of symbolism. But in the spirit word, it’s different than what we see. What kind of concerns should I worry about? I’m really worried about everything.

The baptism is not symbolic; it is a sacrament. It is a real avenue of God's grace into the lives of His people. But do not worry, pray the holy rosary for your brother's children every day (if you cannot do everyday, then try at least every week) and Virgin Mary will lead them to God and kindle in them a desire to receive the sacraments. Everytime you are worried, say a prayer for your family.

I hate to go against the grain here, because I hate conflict, but I just can't seem to let this go, so bear with Father Mike ! If you are saved by infant baptism, then surely this undermines the work of the cross. Why did Jesus bother to die for our sins if a sprinkling of water does the same job? In my mind baptism is a declaration of our belief because we have heard the word and repented of our sins. It does not 'do' anything. In my office conversations about God, one colleague said " well I am a Christian because I have been christened" now she does not go to church, or profess a faith. Therefore the assumption by some folks is that as long as they have that christening then they get to heaven. I am responding because I genuinely worry that folks are misled, I know people on here are for the most part better informed than that, but there is no specific instruction for infant baptism that I can see, I had an interesting reply to my comments from the last video, which was food for thought. I still can't square it up with the gospel. Keep the videos coming because they are really thought provoking.

We inherit original sin from Adam (plus we all have our own personal sins) but we are saved through Christ's sacrifice. Therefore, we have to reclaim our sonship/daughtership with God through the sacraments that were institutedby Christ. We are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and through Him we can again be called sons and daughters of God.

Mark is talking about adults under regular circumstances (meaning no serious mental disability, no imminent death, etc) that would apply to 99.9% of people. For those who die as babies, for example exceptions can be made since they lacked the ability to have faith. In a similar way, for those who are about to die, like the thief who died next to Jesus, exceptions can be made for lack of baptism. Hope this helped!

@jerome2642
@jerome2642 Жыл бұрын
You are making the mistake of interpreting the Bible in a strict and legalistic manner. It is true that God expects us to REPENT before we are baptized. But this principle only applies to human beings that CAN repent (i.e adults). For those human beings that CANNOT repent (i.e infants) , God understands that it is not their fault and so He has no objection if they are baptized without prior repentance. Do you think that God doesn't understand that infants are a special group of human beings ? Do you think that God doesn't realize that they CANNOT do certain things that adults can do? Ofcourse He does. And so you shouldn't expect God to apply the SAME rules and requirements to both infants and adults. The reason why the Catholic Church baptizes infants without requiring them (infants) to repent before baptism is because the Catholic Church understands that God knows that infants CANNOT repent and so He wouldn't deny them the graces and blessings of baptism because of something that is NOT THEIR FAULT. Secondly, even IF infants COULD Repent like adults, there wouldn't be any NEED for them to repent before baptism because they haven't committed any sins (unlike adults who are clearly guilty of commiting many sins ). Obviously, Peter told His audience to REPENT before being baptized because he was talking to human beings who have committed sins and who NEED to repent (it is only a sinner who needs repentance). Infants are human beings who have NOT committed any sins and they don't NEED to repent.
