There is no word for 'tan' in chinese so it is replaced by 'black' _lost in translation...._ EDIT: ok just to clear things up, the word for tan is a compound word 晒黑 which is sun-black. And white skin is a beauty standard in East Asia because yeaaars ago richer people could stay at home and didn't have a tan and it's become a cultural thing.

I think a lot of this actually comes from not being used to seeing Asian people. I live in a predominantly white country, and I have to admit that the first time I traveled to Japan I actually had some difficulties recognizing my host sister in a crowd. As I got used to seeing Asian traits, I learned to differentiate people from each other. This has nothing to do with me being racist (at least I hope not), but more to do with the fact that I'm not used to see Asian traits. My parents have the same issue with Black people, although I, through American media, have gotten used to seeing African features. So yeah, TLDR: It's about being used to see certain types of faces and thereafter learning to differentiate between them.

The phrase "I am black." does not have any racial meanings hidden behind. This is a direct translation from the Chinese phrase "我很黑" (wo hen hei). "Black" by itself only means the shade black (黑, hei). And only when it is combined with "people," it refers to black people (黑人, hei ren). The girl probably wants to say "I have a dark skin tone" rather than "I am black (people)." Chinese's preference for pale skin can be dated back to ancient history. It also does not relate to the white supremacism in the US. I understand that in the States, this phrase sounds very problematic. But it is a common thing to be said as a self-criticism on appearance in China. We are constantly comparing ourselves to a so-called "better" standard and trying to find flaws in our bodies. And this is why that girl is being so "harsh" on herself even though she looks pale AF in our opinions. Our harsh standard of appearance is definitely a culture and a social problem in China. On the other hand, racial issues are not embedded in our culture and history as much compared to the States. I understand that this video is meant for western audiences. But pushing social standards on other cultures does not seem fair. However, I do believe that the awareness of racial problems needs to be improved in China since we are increasingly exposed to the international environment. Luckily, I can see some raising awareness of this topic recently. But of course, we still have a LONG way to go. I do believe that it is the channel's responsibility to be considerate about these kinds of cultural and political differences. Asian Boss should be more careful with the translation knowing the fact that you will reach a HUGH western audience. I would love to see Asian Boss thrive and eventually serve as a great model that changes misunderstanding and reveals the REAL ASIA.

The Chinese women seem to be a lot more confident and open about their looks compared to the Korean and Japanese. Although I see most Chinese girls are skinnier they seem to not follow the rules as harshly. The 'under 50kg' rule is literally causing eating disorders here and there, weight literally doesn't matter, its what you look like really.
@persephoneswinter7396 жыл бұрын
do they at least consider height? 50kg for someone who is 1,55m might be considered normal or a tiny bit chubby whereas 50kg with a height of 168m is pretty skinny and underwight and over 1,70m or even 1,75m is scary thin. Weight alone doesn't tell you anything about wether a person is chubby, normal, skinny or looks like a walking skeleton.
@millie46896 жыл бұрын
@@persephoneswinter739 yeah, I think that "under 50kg" rule is stupid. I guess (most) Asians are shorter tho but at the same time I am only 5 ft 3 and I weigh 50kg, people still call me skinny. I mean these girls in the video were hella skinny yet over 50 kg, so weight literally means nothing

There is no place in China where dudes are all 180cm+. Even Yantai, the "tallest" city in China, dudes only average 176 cm.
@otk884035 жыл бұрын
@@StopTryingSoHard 180 cm is obviously an estimate. It's not like I went and measured every single person and averaged all their heights in my head. Way to be pedantic. Even then, an average is an average. In China, height averages are skewed because of the shorter, older citizens aged 35~40+, who didn't have the nutrition required to grow tall. China, along with other Asian countries, only became wealthy recently. This is also the reason why teens/young adults in urban, wealthy areas like Shanghai are going to be taller than their peers living in rural areas. Taking only the well-nourished youth into account, it's very likely that the average is going to be higher than 176 cm. This is also the reason why young South Koreans in their teens and 20s seem so tall despite the population's height average being nothing special relative to other countries. It wouldn't surprise me if Asian countries surpassed the US and some other European countries after a couple of decades.
@StopTryingSoHard5 жыл бұрын
Outside of NW China, I don't think I've ever seen any East Asian who was over 180 cm. In NW China you do see these random really tall people, both men and women. Are you really sure that's going to happen? Because you know there's plenty of Chinese Americans, Korean Americans and Japanese Americans and they are not suddenly 6'8". And a few of those population centers of Chinese, Japanese and Koreans have been in the US for 150+ years with no issues with eating.

So you saying because they don't have a word for "tan" is stupid, make it up then, they have more than 3,000 damn characters and don't have a word for tan lmao?! SERIOUSLY?! Let me explain it a little. For thousands of years in China, people have been pursuing “white” as beauty. Men and women are all the same and girls are even more. And at that time we thought that the dark skin was sunburned outdoors every day to do the coolie, so this idea has been passed down to this day. But our “black”(黑) and “white”(白) are degree words, not white and black. Although we also have light(亮) and dark(暗)or tan(棕or古铜) words, but we generally do not use this, because has been used to, especially when spoken.

Nobody is bashing her because as a black person I understand that in a lot of Asian countries having pale skin is a very common beauty standard does it irritate me yes because being black is beautiful and having dark skin does not make you any less than somebody who is white but at the same time I'm not offended by what she said because it is what it is...but a lot of you guys are defending her saying that there's not a word in the language to describe tan skin which I understand but that's not what she said she said in her statement "because I'm dark" and there's nothing wrong with that but then she proceeded to say "I'm black" I don't get why you guys are defending her saying that it's because of a language difference and she didn't mean to say black she meant to say tan because she clearly said I'm black in english... Now with that being said I'm in no way bashing her because she's obviously not saying that she is a black person and she's more so referring to the color itself but at the same time my girls not black but hey it's a cultural beauty standard difference thing and I get it

@merzulu24166 жыл бұрын
it's a matter of being lost in translation, majority of the world knows what black and dark means. if its translated differently in Asia then simply state that. but we are not ignorant. we simply translate it differently. check yourself. as for the whole world thing, check yourself again. Far East Asia is far behind when it comes to social issues so while the rest of the WORLD address pressing social issues countries like China have no clue that half of their beliefs are considered discriminatory or even border line racist and misogynist. THE WORLD DID EVOLVE TOGETHER, it is they that are catching up. get your facts straights. like i said YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

@gheethacute5 жыл бұрын
i think for most asian country when we mean to say tan..we say "black", maybe because for most asia country with our skin tone, getting ur self tan is not a common thing that a girl/woman will do. its so rare to see an asian woman sunbathing, so maybe because of that the word tan is not often used. instead of tan, asian say it black when their skin is getting darker or not as fair as others. here in Indonesia we say "hitam " (black) too. so when we speak in english, what come out to explain about us being tan or not to fair/light we literally say "my skin is black".

Dear people, The white beauty standard in East Asia has nothing to do with the White/caucasiod race, it has been passed down since ancient times. When we say white or a pale skin we're not talking about the white/caucasiod race but about ourself, so don't get confused with it. Some without knowing this wrongfully claims Asian girls worship white skin or white/Caucasian man bla,,bla which is not true in reality. Some Asian itself are more paler than the White/Caucasiod races.
@asianpride87566 жыл бұрын
White man are odd and funny sometimes.Lol.😂 If given a positive feedback by Asian girls about them, they take it to another level. And there's this angry black man who get frustrated and call Asian girls a white worshippers just because most Asian girls flatly reject them.😂 Haha. Especially the Americans both blacks and whites, European whites has a higher moral values.
@pagethreemodel6 жыл бұрын
Anyone with a brain would know that East Asians have revered pale skin since the beginning of time.
@asianpride87566 жыл бұрын
mzChocoSensualHedbob That's because they're paled skin themselves. I'm from South Asia, and I don't find any significant differences between Whites/Caucasian and east Asian skin colour, they both are white with a different skin tone. There are some whites who has a darker skin tone than most average, likewise there are also some East Asian with a tan skin tone but majorities of both races are still white/pale. I'm saying this because, I have been to Seuol (S. Korea) and all of them are pale skin (white) except for few who're yellowish or light brown.
@sino-centrism70136 жыл бұрын
Megara Lyons Actually this comment wasn't about what the girl said in this video "I'm black" I have shared my opinion about it, in my other comments in regards to that. This particular comments is for those non-Asian outthere who often claims Asian girls bieng worshipped white man, which is not true just because the beauty standard in East Asia favor pale/white skin man/woman. The logic is all about the man or a woman with a white/pale skin tone and not necessarily has to be a man from white/coucasiod race. The beauty standard has been followed since ancient times before the Caucasian arrival in East Asia. I'm making a clarification about that. Secondly, It is not only degrading the Asian man, such ridiculous assumption make our Asian woman looks cheap and bad. As I myself have a 3(three) beautiful Sisters it effect me personally first and foremost and to my race later (Well I feel it that way) while they don't care one bit about the white man niether to they has any plan to marry a White man, so are all my friends who are mostly girls. which is why I see such claims as an insult to both our Asian man and woman. Sometimes people do take a positive feedback into another level like one of our friends has pointed out correctly in his above statement. It is funny.
@BlackGirlLovesAnime66 жыл бұрын
MrYao Vash lol keep telling yourself that. It's the same as white people thinking white skin is superior to black skin. East Asians discriminate their south asian brethren because they naturally have darker skin. It's still a form of racism

I was in shanghai for a month and let me tell you the girls there just have a effortless charm to them. They are so beautiful! They remind me of french women in a way where they look so effortless but i bet the effort they put into taking really good care of themselves is a lot. I've been around some of them and they would use their 1 hour lunch time to sneak to the gym and they walk n bike everywhere. And they love their facials n massages. I'm amazed at how dedicated they are to looking good n feeling good too. I mean let's face it, in this day and age where beauty standards are considered everything, who isn't right? But definitely took back beauty inspiration.

I learned a lot about their culture and to be honest (once we were able to put our differences aside) we actually had a lot in common. I miss them so much.
