I know this is an older video. Nevertheless, this might be interesting for some. I usually fully discharge the batteries with a programmable load and then short them. You can short them with a suitable resistor. Ohm‘s law will help you pick the right one based on remaining voltage and resistor watt rating. This way, there is no energy left in them when I store them until I do a run to the recycling place. Makes storing and handling the batteries much safer especially if cells are off. Never leave the packs unattended while discharging and do it in a place where not much will happen should they misbehave during discharge.

I wonder how many people gave up on the idea of recycling when the only places they could find charged not-insignificant fees to accept the batteries. Seems like there are more free drop-off locations these days, but first impressions can be lasting... If possible, it might be a good idea to discharge the battery as much as possible before recycling it. LiPo killers can be handy for that. The less stored energy the pack has, theoretically the less danger it poses.

You are lucky to be able to drop off batteries that still have charge and just forget about them. I don't have a battery place to bring them to as is. I use a resistor discharger to bring batteries down to zero volts. It is only THEN that they are safe for disposal, even in an unmonitored Staples type battery recycling box as people are commenting. People chucking puffed or damaged batteries that still have charge in them into battery recycling boxes is just passing on the potential dangers. Battery recycling boxes don't have LiPo safety bags and are unmonitored.

Yeah I had an old 1800mh lipo from about 4 years ago. It puffed up and shorted out while charging, thus catching on fire. I put it in a bucket of iced water, thinking it was gonna cool the battery down. Nope just made the water boil. I've never seen a battery before lipo's stay alight for so long. Now because of that I use NIMH and Lithion batteries as they are far safer.
@chadpollman79705 жыл бұрын
Li-Ion and LiPo are pretty much equivalent in this regard. From a consumer perspective, the main difference in catastrophic behavior is that the battery-style metal cylinders tend to rupture explosively once internal pressure exceeds the structural limits of the cylinder, whereas the flat, soft shells try to expand with the contents and tend to rupture less violently. Lithium fires are self-oxidizing and intense (fast-burning, hot). I doubt ice water could put one out.

@@TheRcSaylors It can be a bit confusing rewiring the balance leads but you can figure it out easily by looking up pictures online. Just remember to do the math after. I had a 5000mah 3s that puffed i removed the puffed cell and it's now a 3466mah 2s that is running great. Edit: Be sure to do it outside or where there's no risk of fire you should be careful to not puncture any cell and if possible try to put the individual good cells in storage mode just to be safer in case of a mistake.
@chadpollman79705 жыл бұрын
@Bruno I’m curious: why wouldn’t it be a 2S 5000mAh? Removing a cell wired in series reduces pack voltage, and therefore total wattage (watts = volts x amps), but should not influence capacity (amps). (You just have one less 5000mAh cell contributing to the pack’s voltage potential.)
@Deploracle5 жыл бұрын
@@chadpollman7970 Ah is capacity, amps are current. The total capacity of a multi cell battery is the sum of all the individual cells.
@chadpollman79705 жыл бұрын
@Deploracle Amps/Ah (amp-hours) are the same thing: amperage (rate) over time (expressed based on one hour). For cells wired in parallel (#P), you are correct - voltage is equal to one cell and pack capacity is the sum of all the cells. For cells wired in series (#S), pack capacity is equal to one cell and voltage is the sum of all the cells. Wattage/watt-hours (Wh) are the same regardless of wiring configuration because they represent the total energy in the pack (volts x amp-hours). Hopefully that makes sense. 🙂

Interesting - I’ve never heard of one “de-puffing” before. ☺️ Generally, yes, it is a good idea to retire and recycle batteries that have puffed noticeably. There’s a reason it puffed, and pretty much zero chance of that reason being a good thing. At a minimum, keep a very attentive eye on a slightly puffy battery and stop using it if its condition continues to deteriorate. It’s cheaper to replace a LiPo than to replace it plus whatever used to surround it... 🔥😬

@@chadpollman7970 Yes, they will eventually degass. There is no way the material used is 100% leak proof over time. I think taking a battery pack apart for its good cells can go south pretty quick. If the cells are glued together like most are now, you would only damage the good cells trying to separate them. I dont even bother. I had a lipo for my Apprentice puff slighly, over time, it got baggy. I removed the outer jacket to see what was going on( that was my first lipo pack ever). I continued to charge it and it was only a few milliamps difference in total charge, not enough to throw it out. I tried balance charging it every time but it would never come up to a full charge , meaning the other cells would have to drop down to balance the whole pack. It worked for 3 years just fine till this spring when I noticed that cell had dropped off quite a bit. That was the end of that.

Just put it in a bucket of salt water and it changes the materials in the battery and discharges, wait 24 hour and there should be green stuff coming out
