That sail took a beating before it finally ripped in one spot to relieve the pressure. I'm guessing there is plenty of life left in the material for draw string bags. For every "foolish" action there are also just as many cynical or jealous people out there quick to make a judgement without any thought put behind their words. Love the life lesson that Keith spoke about. When I was in my very early 20’s my father let me take his sailboat to Catalina with my friends the first time. I was flying our spinnaker downwind and flying home. The wind picked up and I didn’t take it down. It split down the middle. When back home, I informed my father what happened and he said no worries take it to the sail shop and get it repaired. A week later it was fixed and the store advised me it was $500. I went to my father and informed him of the price and his remark was, “and?” I got it instantly that I had to pay for the sail. Lesson learned. 😂 Love your videos. When the kiddos leave and you need a an extra deckhand, give me a call.

He owned it, said it was his fault, said he should of ……. but didn’t, he seen his mistake and admitted it like a mature man ! He didn’t blame anyone, he didn’t make excuses, he didn’t minimize what he did, he said, “it was my fault” in front of the world and not many people would do that !!! If Keith expected Jack to pay for the sail, there is no doubt in my mind he would do so, Keith runs a tight ship and he chose to take a mistake and use it as a lesson to teach his family a valuable lesson in sailing ! So yes, Jack did take responsibility!

Why when you have an issue with the wind shifting and gusting with a spinnaker luffing you continue to sail under auto pilot. Surely, you disengage the auto pilot immeadiately 0:10 and sail the boat… and shout all hands to ease the spinnaker sheet with the intention of dropping the spinnaker.

I was lucky enough to cross the Bahama Bank at night under a full moon and calm seas. In those days we followed contour lines for navigation. We were running 15 feet. . .if it went shallower we moved back, if it went deeper, we moved the other way. . .We had to stay shallow to keep from being run over by freighters. . .no radar on our boat in those days. Great memories, thanks for reminding me.

Live and learn! Also, always tie a stopper knot so you cannot "accidentally" blow the sheet. The knot will terminate at the jammer allowing you to retrieve it. :)

This is such a good video, and reminds me of when I learned the same thing. We were running downwind on our 150 genoa, and I was at the helm as dad slept, as everyone else was. The wind was getting stronger, and the boat was handling it better than me. I hated to wake dad, but I thought we needed to change sails. He came up and was looking at everything as I handled the helm, which was getting more difficult. He thought we could keep going, but at that moment we blew the sail. Like you guys, all heck broke loose. We recovered the sail, and put up our storm sail, which was good as shortly after we hit the storms. Like you guys, my dad never criticized what I did, and later we agreed that "next time" we will react better. It was exciting, and I learned alot. Now 30 years later, it is still vivid in my memory of that night. We had so many other memories learned while sailing, which is how we learn. Great video, keep sailing!

If the spinnaker is beyond fixing the fabric makes terrific wind jackets and bags. Just found one at my mothers that I made 40 years ago. Get a cheap sowing machine and try to mend the sail might make a good learning experience to. Or a sail for a dinghy. Just a few thoughts.

S--t happens as we say in Oz, it’s how you recovered from this that truly was of importance.
