I usually have ratchet straps and bungees in my vehicle for a variety of purposes. When towing another vehicle with open hooks on the rope/strap, I typically hook my bungees into the ends of the rope/strap to keep tension on the open hooks so the towing strap doesn't fall off. I usually tow on-road vehicles and my towing strap has open hooks. Hook into the tie-down/assist under the bumper or the screw-in eye in the bumper and attach the other end of the bungee up higher (under the hood if necessary). I came across a Subie with the opposite clutch problem a few months ago. Pedal on the floor and the clutch wouldn't disengage. Towed it a few blocks to a mechanic. I tried to tell the owner there was a screw-in eye he could just take a small square plug out of his plastic bumper cover and attach. He fairly quickly took his entire plastic bumper cover off (and I showed him the threaded hole for the screw-in eye). Hooked up to the exposed metal and off we went. We got to the mechanic shop just seconds before the employees locked up and left for the evening.

Matt, if you are towing jeeps with those front hooks and having issues with the rope coming off the hook grab a bag of rubber bands and toss in the glove box. You can wrap the rubber bands around the hook and the rope and it will keep the rope on the hook when there is slack in the rope.

Makes the tires flatten out a bit so they float on top of the sand, easier to pull. Also helps with rock crawling the tires can conform to the rocks better, but you can lose the bead if you get sideways or in a rut so you gotta be careful.

@@wssides in my opinion, having worked on a few vehicles, owned a few personally and in businesses, so many despite driving for many years can't really drive a manual box and kill clutches and even gear boxes all the time. In my last business which had a couple of 4x4s, Van's and trucks, as the vehicles were retired out( due to accidents, misuse and abuse) I replaced them with autos or in the case of the last truck with a DGT ( electronically controlled manual box but no clutch and can be driven like an auto) as anyone could drive them, I didn't cringe with graunched gears or idiots continually riding the clutch, or dumping the clutch and I no longer had to do clutch jobs regularly A good auto or dgt is an excellent option for the majority of drivers and will give often less hassles overall than a manual box in less than ideal hands. Very few people get the mileage you talk of from a clutch, and certainly not in areas with a lot of stop start work in steep hilly areas. Another reason most clutches will not last the mileage you mentioned is many have no adjustment these day, so once they start to wear, degrade relatively rapidly, instead of being adjusted back to 100%.
@wssides
@wssides 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidp8157 I fully agree. Automatics since 1990 have been more dependable than those depending on foot operated clutches. And just as good fuel economy usually. I like the engine braking of a standard and the advantages in mud or snow of more control over wheel spin. (My brake drums and rotors are quite rusty after a few years as they rarely get used at over walking speed). I had a Citroen with manual shift, automatic clutch. Would have been ideal with 10 hp more.

I must confess I was skeptical about how much difference it would make airing down the tires. But, I knew Matt had experience so I waited to see. I am stunned by the difference it made. I guess it makes sense that tires floating on the sand would resist less than tires sinking in the sand and plowing. Still surprising to me. Just didn't expect that.
