Overtraining is the reason many guys think theyre meant to have say 16 inch arms when they could be 17.5 If you do not see regular increases in strength. Either from increased reps or poundages. you are either overtrained or not get the right nutrition and rest. Young arrogant men always think theyre invincible. they think nothing can stop them. ive been there. The reality is the body will tell you when enough is enough. through.LACK OF PROGRESS. CHRONIC FATIGUE AND INJURY. Ignore roid heads who tell you that training 6 days a week rules. when theyre done the natural will still be around. ive know three guys died before 50 from roids. Its not worth it. I would rather have a true 17 inch arm. than a fake 20 inch arm that deflates in size and strength as soon as you come off the shit. Youve got to.leave your ego out of it.

I was about 200lbs in 2007, started overtraining and in about 8weeks I was 225lbs with rock hard flat abs+ 21 inch guns that I usually worked on 2wice a day.around week16 I noticed I was sore all over and still marking physical and mental Gaines.(or so it appeared) long story short I cought the flue and lost 35 lbs in 2 weeks due to the flue and a really bad case of soar throat to the point where I couldn't even swallow my own spit. The doctors took a blood sample and told me... my white blood cells were 2x as much as normal because they'd were trying to repair all of my muscles at the same time. So even though I had 2x as many white blood cells, there still wasn't enough to repair my muscles and fight the sickness at the same time. I am saying this because normally I would have dismissed this advice, but I have experienced first hand some of the setbacks that Elliot is talking about. Thanks for your time.

Damn man that sounds freakin' harsh as hell. I experienced it too but not to that extent; if anything, it was the most minor thing ever but I ended up not pumping so hard and stopping my work out before my body was completely fatigued. I would only go hard enough to feel or sense the fatigue coming onto me. At the end of most of my workouts, I could feel my grip getting stronger and stronger so I began to just continue on that even though sometimes it felt like I wasn't working out hard enough. Eventually I upped the workout but very very slow paced which increased my gains beyond belief. Glad you're doing better and hitting the gym in a safe manner!

There's nothing more detrimental to your progression in the gym than not listening to your body. If you didn't get enough sleep to recover from yesterday's training or are under so much stress from your personal life or work, or your nutrition has been way off and you've been eating excess processed foods and not enough proteins and enzymes/vitamins and healthy fats, this will show and will effect your training. Rule of thumb: consistency is everything. If you follow a strength program, follow it to a T even if you aren't seeing results right away, following a decent program all the way through will be benefit you more than following an amazing program every once in a while. Same goes with nutrition. Why? Because the body is not separate from your muscles and your muscles are not separate from your immune system. As much as we'd like to believe; we are not machines! (this is why you grow stronger with the more rest). If you are feeling like crap, lower the intensity and go for volume at light weight to get blood flow and oxygen/nutrient delivery to the muscles and body for recovery and to save your CNS. If you feel great, go for intensity or balance intensity and volume according to how you feel, what your day is like etc. This is also why you'll see ADVANCED and elite lifters (10-20+ years of consistent training) rarely going over board with their training, rather they'll do their mobility, hit a strength lift to create a stimulus and may or may not do accessory work (get in, get out, no bs) and leave because they have experimented and learned first hand what works for their body and balances with their overall lifestyle! Again, no magazine or website or whatever is going to tell you what works best for you, they may give you different ideas to try out (always keep an open mind be open to new ideas and philosophies), but in the end YOU must find what works for you! Being fearless and stepping into the unknown (yoga, bodybuilding, strength or powerlifting, martial arts, gymnastics, maybe a combination of all??) You'd be amazed at what the body CAN do when it is recovered and has the "money in the bank" because you listened to it! Volume vs. intensity is only part of the equation! Good luck!

+06livefast for all the reasons you said, you cant sketch your intensity days previously right? i was thinking about that because i program my routine, im studying conditioning and trying things, and work in your max capacity needs a lot of conditions, even for that specific day (nutrition, estress factors, previous work, etc) that must be in place. great comment and sorry for my english...

Be very cautious of following pro bodybuilding routines. Did this when I first started lifting and boy was this a dumb move. Many programs are geared toward guys on steroids and other drugs. The more drugs you pump in your system the longer and more frequently you can train. If you're natural you really have to track your progress closely. For me the first warning sign of over training is a loss of motivation. Weights that didn't feel heavy the previous workout are suddenly feeling heavier and my brain is telling me "fuck this" within the first 10 minutes of lifting. When that happens I take a few extra rest days.
@90sgrunge1
@90sgrunge1 8 жыл бұрын
People are so scared to just not lift. Yes the people like us who love to lift and do it bc we like more than just looking better need breaks. If your natural and training hard 3-5 days a week sometimes the body will tell you just take off 3 weeks! 3 whole weeks. Whatever you lose you will gain back after a couple weeks if you lose anything at all. Keep eating good and enjoy the free time meditate or something read more.

@@Chris53632 you're just not eating enough or perhaps have a condition. Or you're extremely out of shape. I squat everyday, heavy. If take a break say for a week or so when I return I'll be pretty sore, and after several weeks of this my legs will be fatigued and reach the point where they need more than a Sunday to recover. The point is your body is very good at adapting to stress, specifically weight lifting. If you are genuinely fatigued after lifting the same muscle 3 times a week there is something wrong with you. Maybe see a doctor. Competitive weigh lifters who specialize in snatch and c&j use their legs every workout. Your body is capable of doing this too, but you need to make sure you differentiate between just soreness and actual fatigue, and you have to let your body adapt. If you try a new regimen and it's nothing close to anything you've done recently you're gonna get some whiplash. Maybe build into it. Consider yourself an athlete and weightlifting your sport. Maybe you need to lower your intensity. Read up on cns fatigue as well. It's possible your cns was in shock.

The one problem I have with this analysis is that, if you're now wondering whether you are overtraining, then it's too late to find your "baseline." If you thought to do that way back when, then fine. But if you want to know NOW whether you are in an overtrained state, you can't go back and measure a baseline ability against your ability right now. So here's one thing I'm wondering: Do you have to be working out in a super hardcore, extreme way to get overtrained? I train a lot, but I can't tell whether that, or just age, man, is wearing me down.

New studies are showing that muscle mass, bone density and tendon elasticity all deteriorate with inactivity, rather than age (as previously thought). Try resting, sleeping more and drinking as much water as possible. Just chill out and adjust your diet if you feel the need (spinach, kale, beetroot and carrots are things that bodybuilders should eat, but I almost never see anyone do so. Too much emphasis is placed on protein, and not enough emphasis is placed on electrolytes and phytonutrients).

Military training isn't even about pullups. Pullups won't make you better at surviving firefights in Kandahar, or running for the next post once the enemy has changed position on the field, or only eating two "meals" a day (if you're comfortable with eating powder in a bag that is flavored like tuna and grits and can only be heated using the radiator of a Tank, if you're lucky and tanks are nearby). The point is, yes, training will require pullups, but pullups are not important as your endurance and running with weighted packs, or ability to swim and tread water with weighted packs, or ability to drag dead weight 50 meters, etc. Not only this, but it is about how strong is your MENTAL game, your ability as a leader to take control of your fear and to make couragious and intelligent decisions under the pressue of losing your life. Being able to do 25 pullups in one set will be of little importance if these other much MUCH more important areas are top notch. Try this for training for the military: Strength in the morning (deadlift, squat, press, clean or snatch) Eat breakfast, go to work Leave work, get some food Go for a 2k run or lengths in the pool Do some mobility Practice pushups pullups and situps at night

Best most accurate description of over training I've ever heard. True over training is more for endurance athletes, it's a parasympathetic overload essentially which won't really occur with resistance training

Yo Elliott! I'm new to, and really like, your show, dude. I wanna share this little irony here. This is the 2nd time I've seen your show. Just like last time, I came to it now after looking at some over-the-top-professional looking videos on the same subject. In both cases, I feel like I got something from the previous videos, but it wasn't much beyond what I've heard before. Then I came here and your style is so casual that one would (stereotypically) think that the information would be less complete.. Nope. You're on another level, dude. (No offense to any of the other guys, I've hardly seen a few, but) the insights I've heard from you show you have a deeper, more.. instinctual?.. understanding of all this than others. For many, many years I struggled with bench presses and shoulder exercises because I'd injured myself many years ago. I've done a lot to learn the proper form for shoulder exercises, but something was still missing.. It still felt awkward.. wrong.. Doctors, nope. X-Rays, nope. ultrasound, nope. Several physios, nope. Knowledgeable friends, nope. And then, I found out the shocking truth! I WAS a mouth-breather! It's so simple, but so outside the box, that it would take a master to think that people would not think of it. At least, that's what I think. lol. Again, here. Benchmarking grip strength. Gold. Anyway, thanks again dude. It may seem simple to you, but it's made a world of difference to me.

You'll notice a decrease in performance, which then makes yourself get pissed and bummed that you can't lift a weight you were planning on lifting, and then you get mood swings. Best to rest up from each workout. Enjoy your thanksgiving everyone!

I can verify what you are telling about overtraining. I plateaued for over a month with no gains whatsoever. Not in strength, size, endurance, etc. Truly frustrating. , I was forced off my traning for more than a week and when I returned to the gym, I set up new highs in chest and biceps. FUrthermore, I felt great during and after the training as I have not felt for a long time. I can only conclude that my body must have been exhausted, since I lay in bed with a flu now, that I carried around for ages, coming and going, but never breaking out nor healing properly. THanks for the info! All the best

Just an example, look at sumo wrestlers and other old school athletes. They were in the gym every day, non stop. They ate huge meals and slept for hours on end and they didn't have a problem. Even people like movers and farmers, their jobs are pretty much working out each and every day. They don't seem to be having any problems. Its all made up so that you guys will miss training, and buy expensive supplements to "recover" its all a bunch of BS.

I moved to the walkable cities which were Boston and New York. I was living in those places for a little while where I was walking day and night caring heavy stuff all day. I noticed I was stronger just taking walks with heavy stuff all day. I was doing chess sets with 40 pounds when it was previously 35 pounds before I was doing legs out of 195 pounds in center 26 in 90 seconds when it was previously 165 pounds at highest overall I was stronger however when I started lifting weights more and more and then going heavier, I started getting weaker I went from doing chess sets at 40 pounds to 30 pounds and my legs hurts have gotten weaker I watch this video again after all these years and realize that I am just over training and have to have time for my muscles to grow. It’s like planning to see if you cannot overwater expect it to grow in the sun.

I was a wrestler in High School and we worked out 5 days a week, everyday after school, for 2 hours. I rode my bike to and from school everyday. On top of that I had Karate twice a week(right after wrestling) for 2 hours each session so I would ride my bike to and from the gym. Additionally, on top of that I would work out with weights. You can and will over train. I was sick with something I never had before. I remember riding my bike from a friends house on a cold night and I felt so cold and weak, like I couldnt go on but I pushed myself to get home. When I got home I laid down in bed and was still cold. I was holding myself under the blankets shivering until I finally went to sleep. The same night, not even the morning I woke up with a fever and I was throwing up. Don't push yourself too hard.

Guys, take Elliot's advice on balancing your body. I had a week posterior for decades and the end result has been devastating. Both shoulders impinged and had to have surgery after impingement tore my rotator cuffs. My shoulders will never be the same after dual clavicle excision. Also pelvic tilt has caused me years of leg and foot pain. I have been following this simple advice for a year now and my body is reacting very well. Elliot has many great videos on corrective measures. Don't make my mistake, fix it now before it's too late.

I use the following facts to determine my training frequency - one task is to stimulate your muscles to grow, another task is to allow the time for them to grow, and the other task is to give them the tools to grow, things like nutrition, rest, and safeguard them from activities which might be too strenuous and lead to an interruption in the repair/growth phase. The most important and the most ESSENTIAL part of making a muscle grow is outside of training. Stimulus is a just a part among more parts to making strength gains. I train whole body routines, rest 3 whole days, and then train again after resting 3 complete days, but I DO NOT do the exact routine, they are two different full body routines, i.e. I don't do deadlifts on both workouts. I train Monday, then train again Friday.

Best advice for the kid who asked the question, take the PFT of the respective branch you are joining (you can actually get the recruiter to give it to you and grade it to standard). If you can max it, or come close, you're good to go, just maintain a balanced workout. The important thing isn't volume though, its form, there's really no point in doing 100 pull-ups a day prepping for Basic Training if you aren't doing them to military standard.

Over training is real. I first started going to the gym with a buddy from work who was very advanced in weight training and was jacked(about 12 years exp) and i was a newb. When i started i was doing the exact same workouts as him just with less weight and we went monday thru friday every week some weeks only 4 times. At first a got good gains in size and strength but after a few months the gains stopped and i started to get weaker which was weird because i knew i was working out hard but week after week i would only be able to do less and less weight and reps. Then i finally messed my shoulder up real good. Got discouraged and stopped going to the gym for almost two years and pretty much lost all my gains and felt horrible with people asking me what happened you used to be buff. Finally i decided to get back in the gym but by myself now. I lift 3 to 4 times a week and do less stations but still push pretty hard but now that i only do 3 or 4 days my body recovers so much better and in a few months of lighter training i already have more strength then when i was going 5 days a week for almost a year. If your not recovering your not gaining got to let your body recover and my body couldnt keep up with a guy who been doing this for 12 years.
