Growing up I had a neighbor who knew my parents worked at night so he’d always be around incase we needed his help. Not in a creepy way or anything. We just always knew we could text/call him or go over to his house if we needed help. Occasionally he’d text us a “dinners ready if you want to join” or a “make sure your doors are locked up.” His porch light and back light on, all night (his house was directly next to ours so we could go up to the back door via a gate in the backyard fence) and he made sure each of my siblings and I had a key for both doors. It wasn’t abnormal for him to wander around his back yard at night while smoking and taking his dog out, and would use a flashlight to check his yard and ours before bed. My neighborhood was really poor so there was a lot of us kids home alone at night and he always made sure everyone felt safe. A few times he actually did protect us or another neighbor from some sketchy situation. I hope someday I can be that kind of neighbor. The kind of neighbor that feels like family and will help you in your time of need. JJ, from next door, really became an uncle to me and my siblings. When I travel home for holidays, he’s always one of the people I’m most excited to catch up with.

@@kabo2246 I don’t think that calling someone an idiot bc they didn’t do what you might’ve done in that situation is cool. Especially if you’ve never gone through smt like that. Stuff like this happens all the time and it’s really not ok to call someone an idiot or say that they deserve to get hurt after they’ve gone through smt traumatic like that. @@uckbritley1305 so I've been through a traumatic situation, not as bad as this but still, basically you get so scared its almost like you forget common sense. It's hard to describe because of course when your thinking straight you call the cops, but when you're going through this soul crushing fear all you can think is "I need to survive till the next minute, I just need to survive" and that type of thinking makes you forget to call and forget to even move sometimes. I know in my case I couldn't move I could hardly breathe even though the best choice would have been to run and call the cops i simply couldn't. I hope that makes any sort of sense

What a huge part of healing this person engaged in by sharing their story. Reliving that trauma must have been so hard, and I commend this author!
