My 6 month old black lab gives this video 2 paws up! Labs need regular exercise, playing, and mental stimulation. We can tell when we’re lacking, his behavior difference is very noticeable. Fortunately, he doesn’t have a high drive, I’d consider it normal.

Wow, so many impressive things in this video besides his wisom. First thing, chunka-chunka under the picnic table when he sits the dog on top. That Chunka-Lunka sits there until something exicites him and he goes to investigate. Then cute fox lab or whatever comes and lays down under picnic table AND Chunka-Lunka returns and also lays down under the table in the shade. The WHOLE TIME, with all this Chunka-Lunka and cute Fox Lab action going on, the Lab on top just lays there with no interaction from Stonnie. You sir are an amazing trainer.

I have a year old GSD/Mal pup and he cannot watch anything with a dog or anything with the likeness of a dog on screen. Even video games etc..he immediately thinks its real and the "dog" is somewhere behind the tv. He can sit there on my lap watching entire movies. At the drive in he tries to sit in my lap to watch and he's about 85lbs now. easiest training dog I have ever had but he is really weird when it comes to tv and movies

Hi Stonnie, this video helped us soooo much in understanding our 4 months old Lab Bobby. Exactly the same like Lucy he has a high energy level (10+). We first thought he needs to sleep more. But after watching your video we decided (next to sleeping a lot) to go out into the (local) woods every day and let him wrestle and play with all kinds of other dogs that come in this area too. Sometimes a little longer than some people would advise to do with a puppy but he really just needs the action. Since then our Bobby is much happier, much more peaceful at home, listens, no more nipping, ... Great advice! Thank you so much. Absolutely love the way you work with all these beautiful dogs. Thx!

@@stjepangojko1884 You need your dog to pay attention to you. Change direction or get the dog to look at your face. Go find yourself a double row of parking spaces. Walk the diagonal of 4 spaces in a square. You need to make laps. hundreds of them by the sound of it. Your dog won't get over this any time soon.

This perfectly describes my 11 month old English Lab! His recharge rate is so high it’s hard to even run his energy out but fetching or chasing. By the time I’m back inside he’s ready to go again! I will say you’re lucky you have so many dogs because the distraction level at your kennel is actually less than where I live. Your dogs spend all day together so it’s easy for them to take a break. When mine sees another dog he can’t focus on walks because he doesn’t get enough time with other dogs.

All dogs need to eat, sleep, poop and expend a certain amount of energy every day. And it's up to you whether those last two things happen inside the house or outside the house! So maybe we should think of ourselves less as dog owners and more as poop and energy directors 😄.

Got him at 18 months old. I had so much trouble with the second one running away. (Harley) so, I had a Lucy with Harley. He is wonderful right now though. It took a long time.

Tie your dog to a bicycle. Ride around the neighborhood slowly (at a human jogging pace). This is what I used to do with my lab. However, even if a tired dog is a good dog, your lab will end up building endurance so I'm not sure at what point too much exercise becomes hard on the bones and joints.

Hi Uncle Stonnie, I was wondering if I could come to you for some advice. I’ve finally decided that I’m approaching the point of my life where I’m ready for the responsibility of adding a service dog into my life to help with me cope with my PTSD. I’ve been following your notebook and your page for over a year now and I just truly love your videos, and although I know nobody is ever ready for the work a puppy is I’m getting close to the point in my life where I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. Can I consult you via email? I’d specifically love advice on Breeder so(I’m truly ideally looking for a black lab to work with me on my team) and I’d love to get information on how I can coordinate getting my puppy and making sure I’m taking all the necessary steps to train her properly. Also I truly love your videos thank you for uploading.

I have seen some of your other videos and I am trying methods similar to yours now. I even started to build a small kennel in my yard. I really cant complain because she is wonderful in every way except that leash pulling.. and no amount of tiredness helps in her case. Anyway cheers from Europe, best of the best to you all and your furry friends.

Hang in there! Provided you have an appropriate training approach she'll probably start doing a lot better with the leash walking within a few months. She just needs a little time to mature :)
@avispex

It is easiest to teach them to stop leash pulling if you start with a 12 foot long leash. Most people use a leash that is too short so the distances involved between walking in the correct position and walking at the end of the leash are too small for the dog to recognize. However, they can usually tell when they have to make a 12 foot trip back to you each time they reach the end of the leash. If your dog is also already conditioned to pulling, you should work on some lead sensitivity exercises when you aren't on a walk.

is it normal to get a super calm lazy lab even at only 3 months? i've hung out with the lil dude since he was born and he was always first to knock out (among 8 siblings) and now that is he in my home he seems more content just laying around chewing toys than running and retrieving and chasing stuff. i only had one other puppy this young a ridgeback and he was an outright terrorist for two years. maybe i just got super lucky with my calm lab?

I found this to be true. To be a well-behaved and content dog, our male black lab must have his 2-4 mile walk every day without fail. Our female yellow lab and female yorkie are fine without the walk but enjoy it. So every morning no matter the weather (in phx, az), all four of us walk out the door at 4:30 am. Last night, when we ran through some of his commands before dinner, I realized I need to change things up. Holding his bowl and walking into the kitchen, I said, "Huck, heal." Without me saying another word or giving a hand signal, he walked at heal beside me, sat when I stopped, put himself on down, sat back up, walked around behind me to the heal side again, and looked at me. He has to look before I put the bowl down. I put the bowl down. He took a bite and then sat back. I always tell him to leave it after a few bites and then give him permission to eat again. All I could do was laugh. I've gotta think of some ways to challenge this smart 3.5-year-old boy.
