Your videos are well done and effective. I've watched all of them numerous times. I'm currently working with a sensitive, OTTB and using many of the techniques shown in your videos. I watched Fancy's first trail ride today and it's a GREAT how to for getting started on the trails...Keep em comin..

I appreciate your comment. When teaching a new skill I like to accent the teach and later refine the learn. After a while all one really needs to do is think what you want the horse to do and the horse will respond to your bodies unconscious cues.

Jon, I was thinking about your question a bit more. The first cue to the horse is your "thought". When you think your body position moves and you subconsciously shift your weight, sit up straight and become more proactive. As you know, the horse can feel this, which becomes the first non-pressure cue. The second cue is the squeeze. Third is the cluck. Does that make sense to you? Thanks again for the comment.

@OctoberArabian It looks like he has learned if he kicks you leave him alone. That is his way of removing pressure and horses learn from the release of pressure. In essence you have taught him to kick by backing off. That is his way of getting the release. When he kicks the pressure can not go away. Only when he finds the correct answer does the pressure go away. It's the same principle thru out training.

This is Clinton's method. I started the fundamentals weeks before the first ride. If you go to our website you can view all 17 videos we did of Fancy. Sorry for the late response on your question.

First cue is to stop riding, relax and sit back. The next cue is say whaooo and breathe out. If the horse doesn't stop shut it down with a one rein stop. Flex her both ways, pet her and let her stand 10 or 15 seconds. Then start it all over again until she connects the sit with the stop. Doing this at the trot and canter speeds up the learning process for the horse because it's a dramatic change. Once she stops on the sit, ask her to take 2 steps backward after the stop. Be patient.

Hey Scott,am a horseman (Rhinestone cowboy) LOL,from Benghazi Libya,I received a rearing 3 years old Thoroughbred Colt, and i fix the problem by flexibility, loose reins, one rein work, disengaging his hindquarter..etc as that's what i always do with bucking and rearing horses, and it works perfectly. So my question is:This horse is a flat race horse, after finishing my work with him,the horse will go back to racing, and as you know racing horses speeds up under pressure, lean on the bit..etc

Good question. No, I want her to move off my leg not a verbal cue. This is consistent with my ground work cues as well. I want her to move off my body language. The cluck is a courtesy cluck before the spank.

Hello, first of all: wow, your videos are super! I recently bought a 2 year old paint-Bardigiano mix that had to go to the slaughterhouse and I will work him by my self. I have a question: which signal do you use whit a young horse to start directly whit gallop? It is simply a long sqees?

First of all the horse needs to be able to read your seat so make sure you progress to fast start. The key is your body language as a pre-cue. The cue is up to you. I prefer a short squeeze will do the job. I start with squeeze, cluck, spank and then progress to squeeze, spank and finish with a squeeze. Be fair to your horse and train it to respond off as light of a cue that you can. Hope this helps.

@OctoberArabian You have a hot horse with lots of energy. If he's walking off on you we need to make it clear that is the wrong answer. How do we do that? Make it uncomfortable to do the wrong thing and comfortable to do the right thing...stand still. Ask him to flex if he keeps moving then ask him to disengage with your heel in the same direction but with high energy. If he wants to spin let's make spinning a lot of work. Then release your heel and let him rest. Try that.

@OctoberArabian Let me continue on this. This horse is dangerous not just grumpy. Being kicked where it is because a horse is grumpy or has the intention to kill you is unacceptable. You can correct the problem but you will need to be very stern and disciplined if you can't do it yourself get help from a trainer. Please be safe.

Converting a race horse into trail ride horse that fine and easy,so what's your advice when this horse goes back to the race track, i am sure the jockey would apply a lot of pressure on the bit and the horse would be rearing again.can help please? thank you.

hi i need your help so i newly broke in a 6yr horse doing exactly what ur doing. didnt buck or anything when i saddle broke him, anyway in my area there a certain spot he goes to but wont leve and will kick out if i try to get him to trot. when he trots and bucked i turned him straight away to both sides to stop and touch my leg (with halter head sensitive, really good and supple) then lead to another direction in a walk, but he does this when i want him to go forward when he dosnt want to. is what i did right? i then had a friend lunge me in a circle while trotting and he was fine, its just when i want him to go he bucks. what can i do or do i keep doing what im doing and turn him as soon as he bucks and go a different way walking then try again in a trot or just walk, every time i trot he wants to buck or kick out thanks

Wouldn't' the correct sequence of cues be Cluck. Squeeze spank? Since the cluck is the least pressure it should go first

@OctoberArabian Have you done roundpenning and ground work on him? If not you need to, if so, you need to do it some more. The kicking is all about disrespect. The horse does not recognize you as it's superior. Fancy was a reactive horse but she was not disrespectful, therefore I did not have to get after her much. She was also young and didn't have bad habits to work thru. When he is nice you be nice when he is "grumpy" work his butt off! Let him make the the connection it is wrong to kick.
