I love watching the wishbone offense back in those days...I still say it would work today...It was truly a work of art to watch...Thanks for the upload

Too, Colorado's Wing-T is a classic too. My high school ran that offense when I played. It's almost as confusing as the Wishbone. I miss football like this...
@Zionsol7772 жыл бұрын
the wishbone will work today just as well as it did then. It requires one thing in particular, execution in the offensive line. If the defense is not disciplined in playing their exact roles, they will be destroyed as shown in this clip.
@areguapiri Жыл бұрын
The Miami Hurricanes shut the Oklahoma wishbone down in the mid 80s and proved that with modern, fast defenses, the wishbone is weak. Especially without the ability to pass in critical situations.

Ahh, the good old days when we just lined up and said "Here comes the option, try and stop it." I can remember a couple games back in the day when we didn't attempt a single pass the whole game.

How often to you expect to see a team score 42 points.......and lose BY 40? You won't see too many like this one.

82-42 just didn't happen back in 1980. This was totally bizarre. I thought the papers made a typo.

It happened again the following year when Clemson swamped Wake Forest 81-24 en route to the national title for the Tigers.

Yeah, that Clemson-W.F.U. game popped some eyes B.Y.U. and Utah St. had a 70-46 shootout around this time too. Those type games were fun because they were so rare. Now I'm sick of all these video game scores today.

I wish someone could upload the full game of this. Amazing offenses before the rules made defenses almost obsolete.

I'm kind of surprised that teams don't use the wishbone anymore. There are so many options with it. This game also has future senator J.C. Watts as the quarterback for Oklahoma.
@jackhamm17454 жыл бұрын
I'm not. Defenses are too fast and too quick for it to be successful today. Miam,i in the 80s, showed everyone how to stop the option consistently. I loved option football. Bear Bryant called the Wishbone "a bad ole offense" and I agree.
@beng41514 жыл бұрын
@@jackhamm1745 They still use the option, it's just called a "zone read" in the shotgun. Same principle.
@Zionsol7772 жыл бұрын
@@jackhamm1745 a fast , quick defense will not stop the wishbone. it requires a well disciplined defense with everyone doing their job, no mental lapses.....

@@Zionsol777 I think the 1980s Oklahoma offense and Miami defense would disagree with your theory.

@@beng4151 The zone read of today is a much more "pass centered" offense than the old option offense.

I REMEMBER LISTENING TO THIS GAME ON THE RADIO!...FOR SOME REASON IT WAS NOT ON LOCAL TV,AND I LIVED IN THE TULSA OKLAHOMA AREA AT THE TIME..THE HIGH SCORE FOR OU CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE FACT THAT COLORADO HAD NO DEFENSIVE SPEED ON THE CORNERS!...THE NEXT WEEK OU LOST TO TEXAS,AND HAD TROUBLE SCORING MANY POINTS!...COACH SWITZER HAD WARNED FANS AFTER THE COLORADO GAME NOT TO EXPECT SAME BIG POINTS AGAINST TEXAS,MAN WAS HE RIGHT!!

@RandysRacingPlace6339 жыл бұрын
Ah, Chuck Fairbanks. Not only was he the coach who brought the Wishbone to OU, but he was the coach that brought the 3-4 defense to the NFL as well. (which was pretty much a reconfiguring of th 5-2 "Okie" that Bud Wilkinson 'stole' from OU alum Steve Owen when Bud was coach at OU back in the '40s-True story; look it up if you don't believe me.)
@paulsonj729 жыл бұрын
If the story is to be believed OU was running the veer the year after Steve Owens had graduated and was struggling. Switzer(who was OC) was watching film of Texas and felt OU should be running the wishbone as well. FAirbanks gave him the go ahead and Switzer contacted the Texas staff and amazingly Texas with Darryl Royal actually helped OU with the installation of the Wishbone. Of course after OU switched over to the bone it sparked a really long run of success for OU
@80sman846 жыл бұрын
Yes But Switzer did something with the wishbone that no one had ever dreamed of doing. This made it deadly. He add the element of SPEED!!!

Besides being a broadcaster the play by play guy in this game also did some acting(usually playing himself). If you've seen any of the Rocky films you will recognize Stu Nahan as was the guy who called all of Rocky Balboa's fights in the Rocky movies. He was also a LA area broadcaster.
