I know it's being told for comedy so this isn't a criticism, but if I remember correctly, dogs do this because they can actually work out things like what another dog's been recently eating and how healthy they are from bumhole smell. Which is a pretty fucking awesome sense of smell! They've even done successful experiments training dogs to sniff people for cancer.
