The part where you explained how walls are built was so interesting to me! I live in a country with a lot of earthquakes so wood seems extraordinary. Columns and beams are reinforced concrete here and then the walls are brick or drywall in the recent years. Also, houses from the 50's and back are stone built most of the time.

Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves kzbin.infoUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

Fun to see my own town in drawings. (That book also helped raise the issue of underpaid and/or enslaved workers in Malmö and some years later some of the worst culprits have closed down.) We have a comic drawing school here, too, so if you're interested you can find a lot of great graphic novels written in and about Malmö 😁

You can measure from the window when it comes to plaster walls and guess where you think the stud going to be. Then drill a very smalle hole and move until you find a stud. It is always more secure when screwing into the studs than even with those bolts. You can end up ripping the wall if your bookshelf is too heavy and there is no studs used. I have plaster walls so that's just my advice.

I feel like plaster walls need some public service announcement love. People are so big on being green, now. There is not much green about ripping out good walls to put up drywall, just because that is what people use now. So the plaster walls go to the landfill, and then the dry wall will go to the landfill when it becomes damaged. I get that plaster is harder to work with when putting things on the walls, picture rails used to be a thing. But people of the past knew how to work with hanging things on plaster; that knowledge doesn't need to be lost. I do wonder if other countries with more older houses have retained that knowledge better. The United States has so much urban sprawl of new buildings. Flipped houses make me sad; they take out walls, trash the old trim, put in questionably installed insulation and mark the house up. I wonder how bad the mold problems in those houses will be in the future. This will make plaster walls even harder to convince people to keep when there are even fewer houses left with it. I love plaster walls and I am sad that there is any drywall in my old house, but it would be wasteful to remove the drywall just because I don't like it. I mean I am not putting the plaster back into my bathroom which had been very abused by badly done past "upgrades". I don't know if I made the right choice on building materials, but I am doing my best with my current knowledge, my bathroom is getting cement backer board. For the drywall I plan to give it a plaster finish to make it look like it belongs in my house, even if it doesn't feel or sound the same. Also I love that Anne of Green Gables is that shelf. And no, it is not weird to want your new books to be beside your bed, my pile looks similar in size.

i agree! i don't see the use in tearing down perfectly good walls that have lasted 160 years just because times have changes! If i need to do repairs that's another thing, but I'll be keeping the plaster walls wherever I can!

JG Ballard is great. He usually writes science fiction, but he also has “Empire of the Sun” which is based on his experiences as a child during WWII imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp, the movie adaptation is also fantastic. One thing I notice about his writing is he sometimes uses uncommon vocabulary and I find myself learning a lot of new words while reading his books. I hope you enjoy the book!

I loved those shelves! I wish I could have some like them, but I live in a country where seismic activity is HIGH, so I keep everything inside short furniture with doors and, if possible, locks, so they don't fly around when a huge earthquake hits. Learned my lesson after the mega earthquake from 2010 which destroyed many of my CDs, DVDs and figures with the shake it gave us... The best part of this video, though, was when you said WHO CARES ABOUT THE WORD ON THE STREET and you'll make YOUR OWN word on the street AFTER READING THE BOOK YOURSELF. People need more of that kind of thinking nowadays, to stop being sheeps in a heard and be thinking for themselves! :) Hugs from Chile.

There are often times I am reminded of my weird gaps I have in my literature collection. AND your video just reminded me that I have never actually read DUNE. With the remake coming out soon, this is a perfect time to finally do the thing. Also I am here for your graphic novel recommendations. Please keep em coming!

I have several books lol so I’m always looking for ideas on how to place them. Thank you I do love your channel and I’m not sure why I’ve missed you for a while so I’m watching a few I missed. Getting to know you better is fun and makes me wish to go on another adventure with you while fixing up your house and learning about lots of books I might read.

Your shelves turned out perfectly. Well done. Concrete Island is the only J.G. Ballard book I’ve read. I read it years ago and liked it a lot. Excellent choice.

Thanks for an informative description of some interesting titles, as well as an inexpensive (and attractive) idea for accommodating my own voluminous stacks of random books!
