Those mushrooms are so sweet I found myself smiling through the whole video; a lovely way to start the day. With regards to high quality gouache, for me there are only two brands: Schminke Horadam and M. Graham. Both are lovely, but the Schminke is just that bit more, extra special. It has a luminosity that just is not matched by any other brand. Absolutely worth every penny.

I do have a $10 gouache set, a $20 gouache set, and then some primary tubes of m graham paint ranging between $30-50, depending on where you buy them, and theres a huge difference in each brand that I own, even though in some ways, they perform similarly, the $10 Marie's set has so much binder in it that it dries glossy, but I still use it for quick studies in my sketchbook, the miya himi set dries matte, and is a lot of fun to work with, but sometimes it is too much like, well, poster paint. & then the m graham set, is like a whole other level of matte, & somehow you really do think of velvet when working with them, they're packed full of pigment, they're so nice to work with, and in general, I really love m graham paints.

I agree that professional materials are so different from the less expensive versions. Not only pigments (both gouache and transparent watercolor) but also paper. I prefer watercolor and gouache over acrylics by far, but when I was painting card alters you basically have to use acrylic and it's impossible to mix the colors to match perfectly multiple times, and you have to work in thin layers and let them dry. I would have quit without having a wet palette, so that's something you could try to make acrylics more enjoyable. You can DIY one with a container, wet paper towel, and a bit of wax paper/parchment paper.
@waymire014 жыл бұрын
It doesn't reactivate but you can also look into open acrylics.. they stay wet for hours on a dry palette.

I love how these mushrooms turned out. It is always wonderful to watch you paint. You are one of my favorites! @Kimmaline4 жыл бұрын
I feel like with artist quality gouache, you can paint a layer of pink and then a thin layer of off-white, and it looks like the object is actually made of a layer of off-white over pink - there is something alive in it which makes things tangible in a way no other medium does quite the same. The way that good gouache lays down is just unrivalled. It almost glows.

@bluewren654 жыл бұрын
Forget the W&N. They are good, but not a patch on the Schminke Horadam. W&N tends to have a lot of separation of the binder from the pigment when you squeeze it out of the tube. In every way the Schminke Horadam is superior and generally, cheaper (amazingly).
@kyraandreatta45224 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with the others here. W&N gouache just isn’t worth it if you ask me. I also much prefer schminke and Holbein. Though if you want an affordable one ive always heard good things about Royal Talens
@waymire014 жыл бұрын
I understand exactly what you are talking about, and you can't always see it in swatches, it's all about how the paints combine and layer in an actual painting. In watercolor there is a difference in the texture and translucency in higher quality paint (not necessarily more expensive, price does not always equal quality).. even though the lesser brand may be technically transparent it just doesn't have the same clarity. There is also a difference in how they apply and sit in very thin washes, that is where the pigment size really can be apparent. There is also a difference in how the colors can "meld" together while somehow still retaining their own identity, while with other brands they either bump up to each other softly but still distinct, or turn into mush. Thankfully we are getting more and more "good enough" options... but there is still a difference that you just can't achieve without the best binders and pigments prepared with artistry.

i only recently started using a higher quality gouache (m graham) vs the himi maya set and omg the difference is outstanding. i can layer and layer and layer and never have to worry about the paint underneath lifting to nothing. with the himi set its fun to use because of the color range, compared to only having the m graham in the primaries, burnt sienna and white. but even if i want to blend something with a clean semi wet brush, it just completely rubs off the paint. m graham gouache just is so much easier to use. it’s vibrant, and i can layer it so beautifully. they turn into beautiful watercolors when i use plenty of water and they reactivate really well and it’s easier to get color harmony when i mix so many colors comparing to picking out a color scheme to follow with the himi maya.

I've been thinking about getting the Holbein gouache lately because I'm falling in love with this medium. I'm currently using Turner Acryl Gouache, Shinhan Pass Hybrid Gouache and W&N Gouache. I know that's a lot of brands but I only have a few colors each. I'm trying to minimize my use of the acryl gouache as they dry premanently when I squeeze too much on my palette and I feel like I'm wasting paint. Anyway, your video made me finalize my decision of getting them. I love the mushrooms you painted. :)

@wulfseig18644 жыл бұрын
Because you can dry them in a pan they are very travel friendly. One problem could occur if you use cheaper product is cracking and flaking. That can make a big mess. So, try to pan them in individual pans with individual lids. Amazon has some good ones. Hope this helps.

I have always used the more economical brands of gouache, have you ever tried the Turner brand? I know even Turner has a couple of levels of gouache! I hope you consider doing a comparison video with the Turner products, maybe even trying out the Turner Acryl-gouache? I have watched a few videos but so many of the artists I watch are not proficient with the medium, I am still not comfortable with it after years of use! I suppose I am not a consistent user, I rather force it into the role of watercolor, not its strongest use. I do hope you think about a video on this subject. Thank you for sharing your gouache experience.

I love Holbein but I experienced the same issues with dry gouache in a palette so I switched to using it fresh from the tube for each painting. Unfortunately, it results in some wasted paint, but the painting process has been more satisfying. :) After a few years of just using Holbein, I tried some pricier brands like Schmincke and M. Graham and have found they are just that much more luxurious. Schmincke vs Holbein watercolors, for instance, is more pigmented, better transparency, and less prone to muddying.

I get exactly what you're saying. Since I upgraded all my crappy paints to professional artist quality, along with watercolor paper and brushes, I can say I'm actually proud of much of my artwork! It does make a difference, a huge difference. But at the same time, I was painting my version of gouache mushrooms and using a cheap brush, constantly picking little tiny hairs out of my paint which made me want to scream! So even though I have a set of Arrtx gouache, which is OK, I recently bought a set of German Lukas gouache and it also made a huge difference! I just have to buy some better gouache brushes after hearing somewhere that gouache will ruin good brushes - is that true or not?
