Jerilyn Ann Heise was only thirteen months old when her Marine father who was commissioned 2nd Lt George S. Bussa after receiving the Silver Star for gallantry in action on 15 January 1943, on Guadalcanal. After his platoon leader was evacuated for illness, Platoon Sergeant Bussa took command and personally led his platoon into action in the ravine west of Point Cruz and at all times fought bravely. Against heavy opposition the men under his leadership destroyed three enemy machine guns and other weapons. He accompanied the Company Commander and the Demolitions Officer into the enemy lines to locate targets. With the fire of his platoon he covered the demolition party while enemy positions were destroyed.
2nd Lt George S. Bussa was killed in the first day of the battle for Tarawa, November 20, 1942. His remains were determined to be unrecoverable but thru an NGO “History Flight” Bussa and a large number of other fallen Marines were recovered and are being return to their families.
This was especially meaningful to me because I was honored to be a part of the “History Flight” team who helped in his recovery.

I come from a Marine Corps family my parents served in WW 2 ,older brother husband and many of my peers. In the Vietnam conflict. My first military funeral was for my cousin 60 years ago,hie was in the Navy his plane ran into the side of a mountain,I’m now 70 and I will never forget it. Both my father and brother are buried at the National cemetery in my hometown,it’s a humbling and beautiful place,on this Memorial Day let us honor all those who have served and given their lives for our country and for those now serving....god bless America.

Yes, that Marine was returned with full honors. Tarawa was the first time President Rossevelte let the actual footage of young Marines dead in the surf be released by the press corp. A lot of Americans got a real wake up call of the cost. What it looked like. I guess so we knew we had to end it anyway possible. A true war in the the Pacific of marines that now knew no quarter. It was looking like no quarter would or asked for nor given. So when those Marines that had to wade 300 yards in almost neck deep water. The amtracks made it over the reef but the Higgins boats ran aground. They knew their buddies were pinned down at the seawall...so they grabbed there guns, held them high. then proceded into a storm of lead to help their buddies and brothers in arms. Roosevelt's son was on the first Marine Raider Battalion. Carlson's Raiders. He won the Silver star and awarded the Purple Heart. Says a lot for his father. All four of F.D.R.'s sons served with distinction. Good damn thing nothing too serious militarily happened with the previous president. Not the Present President's who's late son was awarded the Bronze Star for conspicuous bravery in combat. Some presidents kids can't pass a security clearance.

Ive been there... i was a pallbearer for a friend and colleague who died during a training exercise. A bad ass navy seal...I will and for the rest of my years cry during these ceremonies .....this is so important for the family and for the particular service

My Uncle fought at Tarawa. Conditions were terrible. Tide was too low. He was a 2Lt in Marines. Only one in his regiment or platoon to survive. Returned with what was called Shell Shock those days. Battle is described in the book 24 Hours, The Battle of Tarawa. He took up crocheting for therapy. Made his daughter's wedding dress. I pray this family finally has closure.

They take care of their own. My dad served in WW2 Pacific theater at age 17. The marines provided an honor guard for his funeral. I was very honored for that having served in the Army. I understand the ceremony. And respect Semper Fi.

Very touching. Tarawa was a very bloody landing/battle for the fellows. I have served with several of the old guys who were there. My tenure was 1961 to 1966. Some of them described as they came ashore in the third and fourth waves, their feet never touched the sand because of the dead Marine bodies. Thank the Lord, it came out successful.

I remember my grandfathers funeral when I was 11 years old like that young man with his hands behind his back . he served in the navy for 28 years was a e-9 started as a airdale fixing them old fold up winged marine fighters . And went on up . But the honor he received even as a kid I will never forget the love and the perfection and honor given . My dad was in Vietnam and spit on off the plane home . Bussa, continued, and hopefully re-invigorated efforts are made to locate and repatriate those still missing in Southeast Asia and Korea. Arlinton and Arling alone has this right and that is with the families consent. I was a member of my last commands honor guard. I had the privilege of doing the occasional parade and standing watch for some of our fallen. While we were nothing in comparison to the sharpness and perfection people who did/do this in Arlington I still took this duty with all the reverence it deserved. I felt and still feel that I owed it to the families and the deceased to pay them this respect. The most difficult part for me was the presenting of the flag. Looking into the eyes of the wife, mother or young child as you presented the flag was a duty I am proud to have done. Giving them a momentary rock to emotionally lean upon when they needed it. It has been over 20 years ago and it seems like it was a blink of the eye.

Just came across this video. A very long time ago, I served 21 years in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer with 3 years in combat. My first duty assignment as a 2nd Lt was as a platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. I served 2 more years in support of counterinsurgency operations in a foreign country. I have always been especially proud that no US service leaves anyone behind unless it's under extreme circumstances such as ships being sunk pilots lost in unknown circumstances, and there are cases where Army and Marines dead cannot be recovered. But the US has always committed resources to finding these remains, identifying them, and giving them the burial they deserve for sacrificing their lives for our country. If a US service member's remains are found on a WW I battlefield and can be identified, he/she would get the same honors. It's a tribute to no only the Greatest Generations, but to those who followed and made the sacrifices when our country didn't support them. I know. I returned from Vietnam to a hate-filled generation that called me a baby killer, who tried to spit on me, and were violent to me when wearing my uniform. Even in the 1970's when I was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corp in Washington DC, President Carter directed us to wear civilian clothes (suits) to work to reduce the presence of the military. Can you really comprehend that? We were not allowed to wear our uniform in Washington DC because it might upset some people. That was the low point in my career in the Marine Corps. I couldn't wear the Marine uniform in DC because it upset people. Thank God things have changed. I envy those military coming home where people thank them for their service. I served in an era where I was despised for my service. Thank God times have changed.

My uncle was a 19 year old Marine on Iwo Jima and turned 20 just before the Battle of Okinawa. He was my mother's only brother and served before the only son was exempt from serving in combat. He died in 2009 and had a Marine guard grave side ceremony.

Another American hero has returned home. I am proud to be an American and watching this video fills me with pride. We lost a family member who was a marine because of a training mission in South Korea years ago. It was the most impressive funeral I had ever been involved in. My Dad was a sergeant with the F7F Night Fighter Squadron for the air field. He said the day after one attack the Japanese were 3 high in a row trying to overrun the Marine positions. It is a Blessing that any survived, but a blessing that they gave all for us.

Great video and blessings to the family of one that gave his all. He is rightfully resting at home now from that blood soaked soil called Tarawa. When person's that have served or are serving, no matter the branch, get together knowing each other or not, a small bond between them appears. "You were in the ____-"? "Hey, I was in the ____. Then the talk of experiences while serving begins.
