I just saw Nate + Kinfolk this past Sunday night at Monterey Jazz....wow! Guy and his band blew me away! Got to chat afterwards with him back stage. Just a super nice guy...and a killer player!!!!

Square Wheel, as far as I can tell, is based around a bar of 4/4, and a bar of 7/8. Oh, and ri-di-cu-lous syncopation. Dude's just outrageous.

You must have heard this a million times before but the way you handle those 22” and stop them. That’s just amazing. Leave phrasing for the of the band. I’m gonna practice this stuff until I make it to something that sounds like me, but with your context in mind. Thank you for your inspiration. Greetz from the Netherlands.

Am I the only one who's had the thought that a collab between Nate Smith and Jacob Collier would be off the charts?! Nate has incredible creativity in his playing that I think would be a perfect match to Jacob's off-the-wall ideas!

Holy heck this is next level unreal! Love ALL of these musicians. I'm probably a little out of the loop, but I'm especially glad these videos have led me to the magic that is Takeshi Ohbayashi! I'm positively blown away. Thanks Nate and the band, and thanks to everyone at Berklee! Keep 'em coming

This is what it sounds like when the Pocket is kept and everything gels together. No one is over playing anybody. That helps to create a groove you cant help but do the studio neck bounce to!

Looking at the extent of the over hammering, I would guess that it is either a prototype Thin Overhammered, or the Bounce/Thin Overhammered prototype that Zildjian was rolling out around that time. It’s hard to tell considering the main difference between the two is the cluster hammering and bell shape.

@@m.dave2141 If i'm not too late, here you go : he divides the beat in 5 (quintuplets) instead of the usual 3 (triplets) or 4 (16th notes) and accentuates the first and fourth quintuplets. ONE (two three) FOUR (five) ONE (two three) FOUR (five)... and so on. Good practice !

Wonder what the mistake was that cracked him up at the end of Square Wheel (you hear him say “Whoops!” after the song ends). If that cymbal grab at 13:30 wasn’t supposed to happen, then it’s the happiest accident that ever was

At the beginning of the video, i noticed the pianist couldn’t catch up with the tempo so nate helped him to get the right tempo. That explains why the pianist was watching nate the whole time. Nothing sounded weird and it was fuckin beautiful.
