Atmos - Takedown Survival Bow by SAS - Review

These bows never make any sense. Many of us who hunt with a trad set up and use a take down style bow would never take one of these out in the bush. ILF and regular universal take downs offer so many real world solutions. Slapping "survival" on it does not make it qualify. My Hoyt Buffalo packs into a small slim case that straps right onto my ruck. But as always Armin a professional review and thank you for them all!

This is not sold as a survival bow, but as a compact hunting bow. The company even say this in some videos and on the website. So not being a survival bow then one must ask, are they good bows? Looking at the reviews on the website they average over 4 and closer to 5. So clearly this is a good bow. I do think that Herman unfortunately didn't set this bow up properly when he did the review and shot it without a proper shelf pad installed and arrow tuned to center so it kind of makes the bow look bad in my opinion. I would love to see this review redone so the bow is given a fair chance after having been setup correctly.

I just bought and received an Atmos bow, and your review hits exactly on every point I wish that SAS would have though about when developing this bow. I mean, this is a fantastic bow already for what it is intended for, but there are simple little common sense things that would have made this bow even more user friendly. Having an attachment point for portability of the Allen wrench would have been ideal. Making the design of the limb attachment bolts into something that could be more readily screwed in and out by hand, by using a slightly protruding knob with the Allen key hole in the middle would have been nice. And lastly, there seems to be too much riser and not enough limb length. I would have preferred a slightly shorter riser, reduced by about 5 inches and about 2.5 to 3 more inches of limb length on both limbs. I do agree this bow's performance is not optimal, but it is a survival bow and yet it is amazing that it has so much room for improvement. I also think it once I add a proper arrow rest, a sight and a stabilizer, it will become more tuned in and smooth, but it's inefficiency will still leave it with a few limitations. I can't wait to test it once it's slightly more tuned. Great video, thanks!

While their bows seem well made and have some nice technical innovations. They look more like a solution for a problem, that first needs to be found. There are lots of58-60" takedown recurve bows, which do not take up more space and are quicker to assemble. Think their customers are people that buy everything that has survival in its name, just too feel cooler then their neighbor who just has a regular bow.

I have one of these and it takes up much less space than any of my recurve bows. Much, much less. Compared to my Hoyt Satori it takes less than half the space in my ILBE. I can't fit my Satori in my shorter packs, but this thing slides in there no problem.

I understood what you were trying to explain about a twisting bolts. The Samick Sage uses twisting bolts on the limbs instead of needing a tool. I don't think this bow serves a useful purpose. They made the price because "Survival" was put in the name. But you could get the same or better out of cheaper bows like the Black Hunter Recurve or Longbow, Samick Sage, some Asiatic bows, etc. All those bows are also more aesthetically appealing.

I personally see no reason to choose this bow over any other cheaper take down modern recurve/long bows, or even a traditional take down horse bow, but thats just my opinion, to each his own in the world of archery 🏹💪

Yes to the changes you suggested Armin, I know I would lose that Alan wrench in the bottom of my purse😁 Then I would have to tell my dinner or attacker to hold up a second while I locate it.

Very Metal risers are horrid for the Trads, but the noise an bad vibes are what it is Man! Radius, fully curved launch pads make launching a super Psych experience. Beauty Armin.

You did it again, Mr Armin. I mean a great review, of course! 148 fps with 11,3 gpp at 28 shows again straight bows are not slow at all, simple straight, narrowed shape meaning poor storage, but (without siyahs) really high efficiency.

Another great review. For me that more expensive than those take down Korean bows from Indonesia, and very slow compared to those highbred Korean take down, no way I’m going to spend that kind of money on about that I need it Allen wrench to take apart, I wish you would do a comparison of the takedown bows versus the folding including the traditional style, including speed suitability, because if you’re trying to use a bow to survive it needs to be easy to shoot accurately, because most probably your life depends on it unlike target practice

but then that right there is the reason for all of the practice. we drill until we can do it without thinking about it, a reflex action. just like boxing (for example) where having drilled each punch individually and also mixed up into combinations we can simply then react to the changing situation in front of us, react to and use opportunity. exactly like the survival situation You imagine.

Everything with screws is not takedown to me. There are Olympic bows with only "stick it on" limbs. So I don't understand that bow. Someone tried to invent something new that already exist in better... At least it looks nice.

A survival bow should be very versatile , ambidextrous and short with zero tools needed. This bow and every other survival bow falls utterly short....far short of the equipment I'd want in my hand when I am caught in the midst of a survival situation....to give protection from large predatory animals or worse humans. To secure difficult to reach food resources such as fish and birds ,to be powerful enough to down big game animals such as deer so it needs to be very efficient. I have a design for a survival bow that would be all but indestructible and fulfill all requirements .

i think its aimed at a certain market of survivalist type people that are attracted to military type stuff,any cheap modern takedown bow for less money would do the same job but its probably alot of image and symbolism in the design as marketing.

The ratio between the length of the riser and the length of the limbs should be greater : smaller riser and longer limbs or smaller riser and longer and recurve limbs . Other wise better looking than the previous bow .

The point of the bow is that it fits into a small backpack. So it was designed with a riser and limbs that are the same length so as to allow portability. Yes it may make the bow slightly less efficient, but looking at the speed this will easily hunt deer with no problems. Having longer limbs and a shorter riser makes it just like any other bow; that it wont be as small when packed and then there is not need for it. I think its a great solution for when pack space is very limited.

I wonder if the screws could be swapped out for a truly tooless setup like a Samick Sage. This makes much more sense for a 'survival bow' where loosing your allan key in the field is a deal breaker.

Having owned one: you're better off with an ILF. The insert for the stabilizer fell out, the limb bolts needed replacement because they were weak, it didn't come in a foam thingy, they discontinued the #30~35 long ago, it shoots slow, it's ugly, the takedown dimensions are just a gimmick, and it's been at that "reduced" price since at least August 2019. Positives? Nice weight, it's quiet, and string-walking works just fine. But seriously, just get an ILF riser.

very interesting review thank you. I particularly like the slowmo shots which show the arrow performance characteristics . There was a huge difference between the 600 and 400 grain shafts but you didn't mention the point weights of the arrows which would be very helpful to us novice archers struggling to make suitable arrows to match our bows with limited testing facilities and equipment. I have a 26 # Snake bow but my 30" draw makes it 30 # .....what wooden arrow specs would you suggest please for field archery 25-40 M

The overall weight is enough to mention I think, otherwise it gets too much into detail. And this is not a video to show which arrows one should use :) for the snake I would get arrows spined 30# which is usually the minimum in wood, I would get some 600’spine carbon

Oh, wow the string angle is... kinda non existent, again, way over 90°. But I noticed, is the handle section designed to be asymmetric? Never taught that would work with the exact same limb metrics on both sides. Or does this depend on the material? So far as I know, with wood you have to have a thicker lower limb, since its shorter doe to the lover positioning of the handle.

US made from a billet with CNC. You won't buy a bow for this price anywhere in the US that is billet machined. Yeah you can buy cheap cast risers from Korea and China; but I wouldn't trust them long term.

I like this bow (provided bolts hold the limbs and will not break alongside with the riser esp. with higher weights ). The idea of using modern materials seems very productive and future oriented. The bow and aroows need some tuning of course. I would put on a high arrow rest and a plunger and shoot the system 3 under

That how I shoot mine. I also string walk with it. Have hunted rabbits with it, pigs next. Use it for 3D at club. Very accurate and quiet. Oh it’s also cut 13 ml past centre.

Very expensive and unoriginal design, better than the earlier survival review but a warfed blackbear of eBay will shoot a lot better, have freely available limbs and be a lot more cost effective. The designer should have thought of ways to store the limbs on the riser, instead he just copied the norm. Originality/price/value 1/10

Not exactly what I would call a survival bow, not at that price, I think I would put some sights on it and be more inclined to take it to the range, and put the folding survival bow in the boot of the car.

I have a Satori and n Atmos. The Hoyt is an amazing bow, but I just can't bring myself to sit in the rain with it or throw it around in my pack like I can the Atmos. So for hunting with the vehicle, Satori, but for taking a bow with me into the field for a few days in a pack. Atmos for sure!

I think that this bow is too technically not survival. And on 40# speed arrow only 148 fps ? It's so small... My bow is 24# and speed is 134fps or 41m/s. Not big difference ;-)

What gpi and draw length are you shooting to get 134FPS. The Atmos should be shooting 180FPS+ at 30" with a 350gr. arrow.
