I hope to some day do VRChat and hopefully also fullbody tracking, but my avatar has VERY different proportions from me. Is this gonna be bad enough later on to warrant major changes to my artistic vision of my character? My human is built like an oak and I want my character to be more willowy.

I know this is a year old, but I think that this is talking more so about the proportions of the rig, rather than the characters. You can have a skeleton rig that matches your proportions even if the character's proportions are very different from you.
