If Necromancy DOESN'T involve enslaving the original soul than necromancy is the less evil option, the corpse is just a corpse in that case. If Necromancy DOES involve enslaving the original should then it's worse, because it's just slavery again, but the slave is in a rotting corpse body instead of a living one; if you're a slave either way then being in a living body that isn't in constant pain and rotting away under you is better.

But what if the soul isn't enslaved? Wouldn't that make Necromancy great? It can extend you life to after death, and once your body rots away you just build a new body to move the soul into. You can build a super cool Frankenstein-like creature, and then once you die your soul travels into the new body, living on for another twenty or so years before you need to replace the body.

"I can hear the nerds getting upset" Honestly, its the opposite. Most "react" channels are garbage because its just an excuse to watch people pog at "thing you like" and are otherwise superficial garbage. You on the other hand will stop whenever anyone makes a single sentence to go on a five minute tangent on world history or the Military Industrial Complex, and its usually quite interesting. Hence why you're the only React channel I follow.

It is nice to see people that get the context react to your hobby. A good example of good and bad reacting is "Chicago reacts" channel were they have a couple actual gamers react to the insanity of Lets game it out, Sseth and Mandalore and sometimes some normies that try to make lame jokes and are out of touch with the subject of the video and can pick up and the more subtle jokes.

Agreed its all how the writer handles it. A co worker had a necromancer in dnd who lead a country that was democratically ran had some of the highest standards of living where people knew the guy was a necromancer and the standing army was undead none of the country's neighbors could touch it the way he staffed the army was hey you get to stay in the best place ever and when you die I get your body or something else I can't remember what it was years ago but his character was finally killed when the gods got involved. Either way the man found a way to make what is normally seen as one of the worse things into a tool to make a place that didn't really have any issues or war.

For SoC the issue comes with necromantic magic corrupting the very land it’s performed on and the undead trample over. This is the third way to handle it: necromancy as a corrupting influence outside of just animating zombies or possibly enslaving souls
@johnj.spurgin7037
@johnj.spurgin7037 2 жыл бұрын
@@biotoxin6280 not really. More an answer that depends on the missing variables in equation. Bloody algebra. For instance, in 40K? Necromancy would not only be morally acceptable, it would be a PREFERABLE fate to death, because the sea of souls that is now the warp is stuff a daemon-besotted blender of soulmatter and concepts all but the strongest souls are just reduced to so much nothing, if they aren't eaten. Conversly, in warhammer FANTASY there is not only gods of death that safekeep the dead in their afterlifes, but necromancy seems to be inherently metaphysically corruptive and evil.

Regarding the whole "serf" thing: it originated from the late Roman Empire. The serf would be legally bound to a certain area, which he would cultivate for a landlord and whom he would pay in produce from his fields, in exchange for protection. It was actually a massive step forward, in spite of how it's nowadays seen as slavery with a different coat, as unlike slaves, serfs were legally people and as such had rights, even if enforcing them, especially against nobles, was often an issue. How a serf could be freed differed based on nation and time period. For example, in the Holy Roman Empire, if a serf spend a year and a day within a city, without being recalled by his landlord, he was free. Which is why we in Germany have the saying "Stadtluft macht frei," or "city air makes free (lit.)".
@krinkrin5982
@krinkrin5982 2 жыл бұрын
How serfs would get their freedom depended on the region and time period. In eastern Europe they were bound to the land for life, in England, especially after black death rolled over, they often could pay the lord for their labor in advance, so that the lord could attract someone else to fill in for them. In general, the mobility of people after the pandemic was much higher due to skilled labor being in short supply. In later ages, serfs were also people who were paying off their loans with labor for the person they borrowed money from. They were not slaves, though the contracts often sound like slavery to us today. Of course, unscrupulous moneylenders would write them in ways to get free labor out of debtors even after their debt was paid, for example by charging them huge interest, or forcing them to pay for things that they would 'generously provide', like room and board, which the debtor was obliged to use.

"Would necromancy be better then slavery?" Depends on if you put souls in the corpse to animate it or not. Cause if you use their or anothers soul to power it all then it would be worse. If not, then its just animation of an automata, with the caveat that that automata could be the body of your father or sister etc.

There’s also the issue of the magic being corrupting to the environment and/or other people like it is in Songs of Conquest. It lets you have fun with simple skeletons and zombies while also making sure the act is still rather immoral.

I guess it depends on the author or writer on the story they are working on. There is this certain light novel that got anime adaptation that its necromancy is the corpse commanding without enslaving souls type. After an opposing nation gave up a city to them, most of its population evacuated so they were really low in manpower to run the city. So, they used skeletons to work on the crops, skeletal horses on cargo, liches as menial government staffs, death knights as town and caravan guards and ghost ships as outside city patrols. Humans who stayed behind were surprised how safe and well-fed they are now as the new major population of the city don't need to eat and rest and keep on working. If the setting was changed to modern times, they would be having skeletons working on sweatshops too.

26:07 yes. Technically. If a serf left his lords land and fled to a town and stayed there for year he would become a townsman. Which was common. As the towns would obviously want more people for trade and skilled labour. Also every peasant that fled was one less the stuck up nobles had, so why should the townspeople involve themselves? A serf could also be freed as a reward for military service. Although this had to be exceptional military service. As in a billman who manages to bring down an enemy commander. He would be rewarded with money and land depending on how important their actions where. Although this didn’t happen much.

16:44 - actually the major difference between serfdom and slavery was that it was technically voluntary and one could leave. Depending on the country, the rules on which one could leave were pretty absurd, but there never was actual engorcement against one's will to serve. For example, late 1st Commonwealth Poland had one of the strictest serfdom laws (basically only Russia was worse), but it still allowed one to leave. You had to leave behind everything, basically leaving with that which you can carry on your back, as law stated that everything you earned was still technically noble's property as you earned it working his land, but there was a provision that you can leave carrying your personal belongings yourself. Depending on the region and noble that right wasn't always respected, but there were actual cases of nobles being punished for breaking it and those who lived close to capital actually never really tried to break it as redress was certain in such a case. But the story was different on the border with Ottoman Empire. Fun fact: Even then the calvulated cumulative % of work a serf had to work for their noble, church and king was less than even the lowest estimation of % of taxes on modern Pole's earnings. (And tax law in Poland is so complicated and variable that you have to estimate it.)
@krinkrin5982
@krinkrin5982 2 жыл бұрын
And they are making it even more complicated and absurd right now. This year alone, there was a massive reform, that was mostly rolled back three months later, and then the law was changed again. It's like Seth vs the dev team, but in reverse.

Necromancy is better than slavery if the souls not involved, because it's just using corpse golems. If the souls involved that means souls exist, so if an afterlife exists then it is undeniably worse, if there's no afterlife and you've dragged the soul back from the depths of the void to do your bidding without their will then it's still worse, if they still have their will then it's probably better than slavery since they wouldn't feel pain, but their torment would also not end. It's iffy.

Serfdom was very complex and depending on the culture. Depending on where you draw the line to consider something slavery, some forms of serfs were slaves in all but name and in others they were just citizens working for a lord. I'm no expert by far and it is a very complex subject with a lot of nuance. Also wheter necromancy is bad is also a very interesting discussion. It all depends on what happens with the soul/consciousness. If it binds the dead person in a body to control and they are aware of it, it is absolutely horrendousunless they can continue their previous life. If it binds the soul/consciousness without them being aware it is debatable and relies on wheter it affects what happens to them after aka afterlife etc. If it is basically just the body controlled with magic and no soul it might be macabre but I see absolutely no issue with it because it is basically just biological/skeleton robots to do cheap labor and has non of the negatives of slavery.
