I remember reading a story where a U.S. citizen went to Canada with his girlfriend and he got his draft notice (it was during the Vietnam war and he was anti war) so he denounced his citizenship. Later his girlfriend dumped him, so he was stuck in Canada because he was no longer a U.S. citizen, so some antics crossing the border with help of a recruiter, he finally joined the navy and was sent to Vietnam on a swift boat and finally got back his citizenship

Similar situation happened to a guy I went to high school, he had been a drug dealer and at one point was caught using heroin, at one point he was on probation and popped hot for marijuana. Right after he got off probation he decided to join the Marines and right before I went to basic I ran into him at my job and he asked if it was normal for recruiters to stop answering your calls if you tell them you popped hot on a piss test on probation.

Haha! I joined the Navy during the years Reagan was trying to build up a 600 ship fleet. They were taking anyone that could sign their name. Having a “light on upstairs” was not required. I met some of the most brainless people on the planet. In addition the “prison or military” program was still going on and a small number of gang bangers that may or may not have been felons served in my squadron. Getting out was and still is the happiest day of my life.

Lol. Funny. But actual recruiters will kiss a potential recruits a ss, all the way up until they either board their first flight or get through MEPS and swear in. Strangely, the first branch that tried calling my house was the Marines, then the Navy, and lastly (after I was already a decent rank) the Army. The USAF thought they were too good. Many years of Jnt experience have proven that to be a lie.

If you dig into the JAG records, you'll find a recruiter that lied too hard, tech sergeant promising guys they'd be OSI after recruiting, one recruit called the recruiting squadron asking questions cause he claims he was promised as spot, that opened a whole investigation on the poor recruiter, dude lost rank after the legal nightmares.

One of my friends went to join the navy and he told me how the recruiter told him to always say no to things like family sickness like diabetes or if he had past surgeries or whatever (as long as they weren’t too big of a deal)

Recruiters are very interesting because usually it’s either there desperate like this or it’s the type where they say I get paid the same so no sweat if I bring 100 people in or 0 people in ima try but not be desperate.

Their attitude usually depends on whether they met their command quota or not. If they are desperate and willing to offer up every possible workaround/waiver, then they haven't met said quota and they will move mountains to get you in. If they have met their quota, then unless you look like a walking army stereotype with no obvious red flags (ie, you look like you could star in GI Joe), then they won't care much about trying.
