@@singuto migration and nurseries did the thing for me. I blasted out sithilon, furniture and gems which paid for the food I needed

I have yet to play a game with free lands. If there are any at all they are conquered before I can even think about making an army.

That's interesting as I never had your scenario happening in my worlds :D But you can actually buy some land from the people that own it - the Denari price is high, but not impossible.

Yeah, it is more of a late game goal for sure! The easiest way out there is playing Garthimi. They technically only need clothes, drinks and rations to fight as they bring natural weapons. Some extra gear never hurts, but with their high birth rate they make the best quick assembly army I'd know of.
