@macsmiffy21973 ай бұрын
I’m old enough to remember when yarn (wool) only came in 1oz skeins (very little waste!) Mostly 3 ply or 4ply, so it would take a while to knit a jumper. We always used the back of the chair to wind if no one was around. Patterns came in sizes and acrylic yarn (plastic from oil!) wasn’t available. My new eco rule is…don’t buy anything which will take longer to biodegrade than me and I recycle and reuse as many of my clothes as I can. I’m currently knitting an aran jacket made from unravelled Rowan Tweed, which started life as a blanket. 💚
@ARNECARLOS3 ай бұрын
That is an interesting rule.

@@macsmiffy2197 I’m old enough to remember when we called it “wool” not yarn because that’s what it was! And my grandmother would unravel old items, wash the wool and then rewind to knit again. Recycling before it became trendy.

I wish I had known this self-arm method 3 weeks ago. I was working at the Renaissance Festival in my area and was winding a hank of yarn to knit with during quiet times in my booth. 3/4 of the way done, the yarn was so light weight, the wind blew it off the chair and it tangled instantly! I got so frustrated, I cut it off and threw it in a bag to finish at home. But then some friends in nearby booth said they loved untangling yarn (normally I do too) so over the next 2 hours, they worked on it. Now I have a momma ball and a baby ball to start knitting with! 😂

I will be trying the winding method using my own arms. Winding yarn hanks has always been a major frustration for me. One step that helps is to hang the untwisted loop of yarn overnight, then hold it tight on one end and give it a good shake before winding. Thanks for this helpful demonstration.

Thanks for the trick. My boyfriend didn't like to hold the yarn while I was making the ball! And I didn't like to put the yarn on the back of a chair. So, I bought, a few years ago, a table top wooden yarn swift winder. It sits on the table! You don't have to attach it on the side of a table (I had to have one because I've had inherited some yarns from my sister). It is a marvelous invention.

When I wind yarn by hand, I keep a finger over the ball and wind around it about 10 times, pull it out, move it to another area of the ball, etc. I end up with a ball that does not have stretched-out yarn, which is good if I don't use it right away.

I wound yarn into balls in a similar manner for decades, but recently learned, from a different KZbin video, how to hand-wind center-pull balls using a toilet paper or paper towel tube, which works much better than a simple ball. As to the skeins, I sit back in my recliner and drape it around my knees.

I tend to use my keyboard or a knee to keep the hank steady while I wind and at the end I hook it over my hand for the last ten or so rounds. I've never had a swift or a Carlos.

A few years ago, I received some gifted yarn that had been wound like tennis balls (cannon balls?). I unwound it, made long hanks, soaked it, blotted it, and hung it up to dry, turning it often. My best way to rewind it (proper tension, loose in comparison) was to put one loop around my neck and the other over my left toe, and wind away....OK a silly method, shaped by how long my hank-loops were; but it worked for me!

Great method ! Sometimes I just put the skein around my knees, sitting crosslegged and make my ball, sometimes (usually when the yarn is finer) I put the chair uside down on the table and place the skein aroud the legs of the chair, or I place two chairs back to back and put the skein aroud the two backs, spacing the chairs at the right distance so the skein is not too loose nor to tight. I love making my balls by hand, it is my first contact whit the yarn, I love to discover it that way. I usually use a "Nostepine" to allow me to knit from thae isnde of the ball also if needed.
