I idolized him as a young trumpeter coming up in Houston. I would sit at his feet and absorb his music. It was a life changing experience. Once at a Sunday Jam session I was sitting in for a few tunes. He came in the room while we were finishing a tune and stood with his entourage. I was playing with a harmon mute. As soon as the tune was over I moved quickly to get off the stage. Arnette got up and of course blew the house down. After his tune he moved towards aisle to walk out but, as he came up to where I was sitting, he paused, looked down at me and said, "stick with that mute boy; it sounds real good." He smiled and went on. Well, I was blown away. I will never forget him.

I believe this was 10/88, as Mr. Cobb passed in spring of '89, unless I'm mistaken. And here he is, hanging on, in rather terrible physical shape, PLAYING HIS EFFIN' A$$ OFF. One of the all-time best, unique voices. Thank you ever so much for posting! Made my month. Rest in peace, Mr.Cobb.

It is moving, the great hard tenor playing talent, still connecting with the soul and spirit of tenor jazz.

Great sound, great swing and awesome good taste. One of the best ever. Great texas tenor. It could seem unbelievable, but here in Argentina he is almost unknown, as Gene Ammons also, even among the pro sax players. Rest in peace Sir.

Jazz giant just doesn't seem adequate for the late great Arnet Cobb. He seems somehow to epitomize all the tenor sax stars of The Great Jazz Age. Thanks to sites like You Tube and Spotify, their music lives on!
