As an atheist, I regard Jan Hus, and Tyndale, as heroes for their translations of the Bible into the language of the common people. In Scotland, the Presbyterian religion encouraged schooling so that more ordinary people could read the stuff. Eventually, the fact that so much of it is nonsense or even wicked violence becomes enough for an unbiased reader to reject the claims of the religion based upon it. On the other hand, some of the more original sayings attributed to Jesus condemn the practices of the supposedly righteous, wealth-loving "Right Wing".

Well, those who believe divine things also tend to believe daemons or devils. They think daemons anticipated the future bible and created those similar stories in advance to prevent people from believing in Jesus. You may say that is crazy, but with magic, everything is possible.

After reading the comments below, I find it amazing that you can get 2 different takes from the same video. - If you assume (There's that word again !) that biblical texts are the absolute truth to begin with, then everything else we have learned in the last 5000 years is an illusion. - If you study, and learn from historical reality, then all religions are products of Bronze Age, or earlier, myths, parables, or fairy tales. /// How hard must it be for a theist to admit that his whole life has been a retreat into the prehistoric fantasies of heaven & hell, of an afterlife, of angels & demons, of a god that never shows itself ? - It's no wonder that they cannot understand why an atheist has the freedom to think.

Yeah, it's not hard to see why (among other reasons) so many are reflexively dismissive of thinking too hard about it. Often, you are suggesting that they choose your hill to commit total support system suicide on, when in their heart of hearts they've long since come to the reasonable conclusion that the unanswerable questions are so named for good reason, and making a big deal out of the insufficiency of some proposed answers isn't nearly as important to them as, say, attending their father's funeral or being invited to their sister's wedding.

_If you assume (There's that word again !) that biblical texts are the absolute truth to begin with, then everything else we have learned in the last 5000 years is an illusion._ No, that's just the False Dilemma Fallacy. First, define 'absolute,' 'truth,' and 'illusion.' Then study biblical commentaries and sermons for the past 2000 years. Then study the history of biblical exegesis. Then study the philosophy of history (start with RG Collingwood, go on to GF Hegel, and then Hans-Georg Gadamer). Then study the history of Christians in science (the list is very long). Then you will know that everything that Aron has said here is wrong.

There are SO MANY people who just have no clue about any of this, though, they believe just as Aron did (as a kid) that the bible is "the first book ever written" and there were no other gods or religions before them. And it *is* willful ignorance, because you can smash that with just about any (other) mythology, but this has no effect. It's (again) like Aron said here, they *don't want to hear it* if it contradicts their indoctrinated dogma and they will literally ignore it. The more committed will actually *admit they are wrong* and justify their need/mandate to believe the wrong information *anyway.* Smart cookies like you hear that religion has evolved just like anything else and think "well YEAH.." but trust me there are countless hordes of screaming idiots who have never heard anything like this at all.. And here's hoping that maybe a few of them are _capable_ of rational thought and just haven't... really ... _tried it_ yet? Hopefully this and his other videos/presentations can help to bring at least some of those poor mislead fucks out of that cesspool of lies and bigotry.

Talked to her a lot and not kidding, showed her this video and it made a drastic impact. As indoctrinated Christians, we were not taught about other religions, myths, etc. I had a general knowledge, but nothing like this. I even though the world flood was something historians thought happened. Thank you AronRa and so glad I got to meet you at the 2019 Atheist Convention where you said you didn't know this video made much an impact on anyone. Dude, the rational channel, you, and Matt Dillahanty made the most impact and this video was the biggest one. Great Job on this presentation Mr. Aronra you're really one of the best if not one of the greatest intellectuals of this century. You're 100% right the bible is nothing but fables and myths. They are just from the minds of early humans who didn't understand the natural world around them. Furthermore its not just the bible that is fallacious, but all so called 'holy texts' and religions are. In the words of the great Philosopher/Mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria and I quote once again: "Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can they be in after years relieved of them." Unquote.

Great video. I was on the Christian Bible Errancy Debate Forum for many years. To one of the several fundamentalists who tried to rain on that parade I was discussing breath and how spirit got altered from breath. We used to talk about Egyptology as well. Why did the Egyptians see the soul as being in the heart and not the brain? Simple if we just look at how primitive man tried to understand his world around him. You can feel a heart beat by placing your hand on someone's chest. You cannot feel brain activity. They did not have the instruments to do so then. Dead people have no heart beat. Dead people do not breath. Their chest does not go up and down. ah HA!!!

A book I recommend to everyone, a very short but informative paperback, is "The Old Testament Without Illusions," by John McKenzie. That was where I first learned about Sargon, plus the historic facts about the alleged Hebrew slavery at the time of Moses (and that Moses was most likely an Egyptian named Ramses - Ra - Moses), and that the ancient Egyptians were vegetarians and highly ethical. In fact, there is archeological evidence to support that not all the Hebrews left Egypt. Nor were they forced to remain behind.

Hi Aron, I am so, so glad that I watch your video lectures. I love the video were you confronted the Christian who interviewed you. When you mentioned Zoroastrianism, it made me feel that I was right. When I was in 7th. grade in Catholic School, the teacher, in Religion class was teaching that Mary was a virgin and still gave birth to Jesus. I asked her "If she was a virgin...then how did she give birth to a child"? Of course her answer was "Because it was Gods power". I've been a Christian and struggled desperately to fit in. So much that I've read in the Bible either contradicted itself or seemed to be EDITED in many many, places. (Which I know that it was) to please the Political temperament of the time and the Vatican. The flood story as you well know had been told 1000's of years prior to the Bible. I, myself, believe that we were created by an Extraterrestrial Civilization. The Bible itself says in Genesis..."Let US create Man in OUR OWN image, after OUR OWN likeness". It is right there in front of all to see, but people are sheep and DO NOT think for themselves. I firmly believe that we are living in a time when all will be reveled. People often say that we are living in the Apocalypse. I do believe that, but we are living in a Apocalyptic time, according to what the word literally means...."A unveiling" It wont be long that the TRUTH will be exposed. I'm listening to your video as I'm writing this and I just heard you mention Zarathustra. Awesome Dude, In the Bible the image of Satan is so, so evil, were as I believe that he wanted Man to become WIZE and tried to help Him along. The whole "Watchers Thang". Aliens creating Man makes more sense then what the Bible says....(In my book). I once read that God killed 10's of millions of people...were as Satan killed 3!!!!! I'm not saying this literally, but it makes me think...... Thank You, I really enjoy listening to you. Keep On Keepin On Brother, Thank You....Christopher Anthony

Back in 1972 I worked on the archeological dig of Troy near Izmir in Turkey. One of the archeologists in the group had a buddy back in Israel who was working on a fresh transcription of several of the Old Testament books from the original scrolls, tablets, etc. He frequently sent letters exclaiming how there was very little correlation between the modern books and the original text, and how in many cases the text had been so completely altered over time, that the modern versions were complete alterations and likely fabrications. He was certain that once that information got out that it would be the end of Western religion as we knew it. Lesson learned? Don't confuse 'em with the facts! All kidding aside, this is an absolutely excellent (and fascinating) lecture and I'd like to thank you for publishing it. My hat is off to you sir!

It's important to keep in mind that this video doesn't disprove the possibility of a deity or supreme being of some kind. What it does is put religion into a historically accurate context and explains how myths and fables evolved over time. There may or may not be a supreme being, but we know science is an accurate description of reality and ancient religions are not. Let's accept that and move on.

I started reading Genesis and already I've noticed some oddness in it as well as really bad writing. (Calling light "good"? What about brilliant, amazing, fantastic, beautiful or--dare I say it--divine? "Good" is repeated ad nauseum. Yeesh. You wouldn't accept writing like this from a third grader.) Genesis contains a mention of the Tree of Life and it's clear that it's a different tree from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God doesn't forbid Adam and Eve to eat from this tree. But, after he curses them, he admits his worry that they'll eat from the Tree of Life and become immortal. Since they had eaten of the fruit from the forbidden tree, now they had knowledge of good and evil and became as like gods (just as the serpent stated!). To keep them from becoming immortal AND knowing, he drove them out and placed a cherubim with a flaming sword to keep them from the Tree of Life. So why was the Tree of Life there if they weren't forbidden to eat from it? I think the taboo against the other tree's fruit was meant as a test. If they hadn't eaten it, God would have allowed them to eat from the Tree of Life. So they would be immortal but basically be as ignorant as children. He'll only allow his children immortality if they're as witless as sheep and obey him blindly. What. A. Bastard.
@chriscollins2095
@chriscollins2095 8 жыл бұрын
Another way to interpret the Tree of Life is that they were immortal as long as they ate from it at regular intervals. They could have been eating from it all along. So when God kicks them out, he's sentencing them to slowly die, cut off from the fruit that would extend their life. Christians keep saying that Adam and Eve were immortal in the Garden, but that begs the question of why the Tree of Life is there. If they were immortal, it was likely due to eating from the Tree of Life. Otherwise, if they are already immortal, what good is the tree? One thing I find puzzling about God not wanting Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is: that it imparts knowledge of good and evil. Not just knowledge. Knowledge of what good and evil are. That implies that Adam and Eve didn't know the difference between good and evil, and God didn't want them to know. So, were Adam and Eve immoral and they just didn't realize it? The answer I get to this from Christians is that Adam and Eve were just intrinsically good, that they would only do good things.
@QueenBoadicea
@QueenBoadicea 8 жыл бұрын
Fascinating! But you realize that this sounds very similar to Norse mythology. Idunn had golden apples that she regularly fed to the gods to maintain their youth and immortality. When Idunn was kidnapped by Thjasse, the gods began to wither and age. Either this is a very popular theme in religions or someone writing the Bible just stole the idea and inserted it here. One of the themes of Aron Ra's speeches is that portions of the Bible are cribbed from mythologies from older cultures.
@chriscollins2095
@chriscollins2095 8 жыл бұрын
QueenBoadicea I didn't know about the Norse reference, but I wouldn't be surprised if Norse mythology influenced it, or if there's an even older myth. I thought Greek myth also had something with magic apples. I was in a conversation about the Garden when I realized that the fruit could have been something they had to continually eat in order to stay immortal. (I try to think of different possible scenarios.) I used to think that the fruit from the Tree of Life was something that God was waiting to give to Adam an Eve at some point to make them immortal forever. But God never forbade them from eating it. If it was in the Garden, why wouldn't they? The Christian I was talking to thought it was utterly ridiculous that they had to constantly eat from the tree in order to stay immortal. That just wasn't true immortality to him. He insisted that God intended for them to be immortal before they "sinned," which I think may just be a modern-ish interpretation. I wonder if the original authors intended God himself to regularly eat from the Tree of Life to stay immortal, and the concept of God always existing just came later. I mean, early in Genesis, God had a lot of human characteristics. It was a bit later in Genesis that God became incorporeal. It was like the concept of God changed.
@QueenBoadicea
@QueenBoadicea 8 жыл бұрын
There IS a mention in Greek mythology of the golden apples of the Hesperides, nymphs who were minor deities of the sunset. The apples belonged to Hera and were supposed to confer immortality on anyone who ate them. Both examples of Greek and Norse mythologies certainly explain the cryptic passage in Genesis ch. 3, vs. 22 where God worries that mankind may achieve immortality now that he had become like "one of us". By us, I suppose he's referring to himself and the angels since there's a mention of cherubim at the end of this chapter. So that means God wanted mankind to be immortal but only on his terms--as empty-headed, ignorant, mindlessly obedient creatures knowing only what God told them and nothing else. Presumably, that's the fate that awaits true believers when they get to Heaven. If that's all God ever wanted for his people, why put the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden in the first place? Knowing everything, he knew that Adam and Eve would fail and that he'd get to throw them out. So he either wanted witless worshippers or sinners he could punish. Pretty shabby behavior for a supposedly benevolent being.

For a dweller in most of the ancient, Near Eastern, Fertile Crescent it was reasonable enough to believe the flat or even bowl-shaped world of Genesis and its Babylonian precursors. So the idea that the world is fairly small and there's no limit to the amount of rain available, means the flood might be possible. As for loading "all the kinds" of animals and birds, provided you don't think about honeybees, it is not too absurdly stupid. But for people who know that the world is a globe, as Francis Drake proved by sailing round it, or even more extreme, that the genius Torricelli weighed the atmosphere with a vacuum at the top of a column of mercury, it is stupid in the extreme to imagine a Global Flood, let alone giraffes, elephants, bison and buffaloes on an Ark. Mark Twain makes savage fun with the necessity to preserve every disease that has survived that "Flood".

And that the first day was, as it were, also without a sky? And who is so foolish as to suppose that God, after the manner of a husbandman, planted a paradise in Eden, towards the east, and placed in it a tree of life, visible and palpable, so that one tasting of the fruit by the bodily teeth obtained life? And again, that one was a partaker of good and evil by masticating what was taken from the tree? And if God is said to walk in the paradise in the evening, and Adam to hide himself under a tree, I do not suppose that anyone doubts that these things figuratively indicate certain mysteries, the history having taken place in appearance, and not literally_ (Origen of Alexandria, AD 184 - 253, approximately) Don't take everything that Aron says as gospel.

23:48 ff "Satan the opposer" carries the sense of "the opposing hand of God." When Satan opposes Job and Balaam he does so with God's authority, while his status as an aspect of God is manifest in the discrepency between 2 Sam 24v1 and 1 Chron 21v1. The former says "...the anger of the Lord... incited David" while the latter says "Satan" incited David to number Israel. Early Christian illustrations of Satan show the parable of the sheep and the goats, again using this left hand and right hand of God metaphor. The Latin term, 'sinister' and the French 'gauche' mean left handed. These terms have shifted their meaning in common use but retain their sense of disapprobation.
@differous01
@differous01 3 жыл бұрын
@James Patrick Favouring the right hand to write from left to right makes pragmatic sense, but Hebrew, which runs right to left, is easier if you're left-handed. The association of the left hand with destruction (Abaddon/Apollyon) or clumsiness (gauche/sinister) spans both cultures, probably because, facing the pole star, the sun rises on the right and sets on the left (we were orientating long before writing was invented).

The cruelty and narcissism of Yahweh is pretty original. I have not been able to find any other scriptures that declare one and only God, and this God constantly asserting that he is the ultimate authority, to be feared, has a gigantic divine -penis- ego, and so forth. This seems pretty original to me, as the priests of Judah at the time wanted to basically claim that their God is bigger and better than all other Gods. All tremble before him. Perhaps I'm wrong and it might not be original, but definitely hard to find.

And WITHOUT DOUBT it addressed THEIR aggrandizement. "Patriarchy" OF COURSE. But also many other societal/tribal needs: coalesced values/goals, shared prohibitions, hierarchical assignment, sui generis identity. WHO?! thought otherwise? IT is EXACTLY what every other "religion" IS. Is it derivative? OF COURSE! SO'S science. Science isn't invalidated by the overwhelming number of things it got/gets wrong. Science is UNQUESTIONABLY the greatest gift to humankind by virtue ONLY of the things it gets right. DOES supernaturalism correctly address "ORIGINS"? NOBODY FUCKING KNOWS!!!! DOES science disqualify supernaturalism? WE DO!! FUCKING KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT!!! Victor Stenger ("God: The Failed Hypothesis") said: "Religion makes claims which science can test." ODD!! the motherfucker wasn't awarded the Nobel Prize for successfully accomplishing THAT!! WAIT A MINUTE....HE DIDN'T!!! BUT.... 'Science DEFINITELY makes claims which SCIENCE can test!.' Contradictions in the bible start in Genisis. Day 1 he created the earth and light. He called the light day and the dark night. Day 4 he created the sun, moon and stars. You'd think he'd know the sun is the light source for day and depending on where people reside and the rotation of earth, night.

@Alan Jay but doesnt genesis there was an empty void other than darkness and the earth. Whuch is another problem because he made the earth after the earth was there

That’s an easy one. First create light. Then create that which produces light. The 6 days is simplified. It is God putting things into order. From chaos to order. So light without a sun is chaos. He then created a way to put light in order. I’m just speculating here, but it’s not that hard to wrap your mind on.

I am so happy to have found this lecture by Aron Ra. Many of my ideas expressed on my website www.origin-of-religion are strengthened by this lecture. There is a native structure in Barrie Ontario, Canada called the "Spirit Catcher" which moves in the wind which started me thinking that the idea of "spirit" evolved from the wind, eventually I started writing about it and published the website. I am so happy to have found this lecture, knowing that others, more prominent than me think in similar fashion

@@whateverimtold9872 SO sad that this is how America is seen on the world stage. Although we do have a large amount of religious people, only the fundamentalists are the real problem. Conservative Christians are a smaller part of the issue as they make the real crazy Fu@&ers seem like a larger group. I am an American and stand with people like Aron Ra against the religious wave of crazy trying to subdue my country. How can these zealots claim to love Democracy and then vote to force people to follow what they believe? Please, if you are American and Atheist, do anything you can to help stop those people leading the fundamental wave by supporting Aron Ra, Matt Dillahunty, Sam Harris, FFRF and all the other people and organizations protecting us from a theocracy! Sonja Grinstead I spent the first 32 years of my life as an indoctrinated believer and the last 31 years as an atheist after I actually investigated and researched the factual history of the origins of the bible. If what you say is true then that is not representative of any god worth acknowledging let alone worshiping. Frankly you sound like pathetically gullible person. I wish you well in your life of blissful ignorance of reality.

That's what I mean, we will all know very shortly as the prophetic "time table of events" is fulfilled except the revealing of the New World Order " satanic dictatorship One World Leader. When that happens it's game over!!! ..KJV. Do the atheists know that the now fulfilled Revelation 13:15-17 "Mark of the Beast 666" is the now the RFID skinchip which is the "RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION ID" already visible and which will be mandatory out of the New World Order with "do or die" new laws. The chip is to track and control the world, if you break their laws they will find you! ...it's simply prophesy of old fulfilled today as it was supposed to!

***** LOL you can always find a few nutty people that had the benefit of an education. Doesn't mean they aren't believing loony crap. BTW the Flew story isn't what you state. He admitted to many that he had been duped by false information from creationists. At the end he thought maybe a god could exist but it wasn't the xian god by any stretch. Thing is you don't have any straight or relevant facts to look at, just distortions and made up BS.

WTF is New testament empowered believers? Is that a euphemism for New Testament indoctrinated morons? No one cares if the Bible was written in this mystery you allude to, the content of the Bible is what matters and this is demonstrably a myth, a composite of numerous earlier fables and myths. Use your damned brain and listen to the content of this video, these findings are not from one man, these are findings from years of expert analysis into man's earliest civilisations.

I have read that Amenhotep was actually the father of ankhenatun. Both were pharos but ankhenatun was the one who moved the capital away from the priests of the day and started his own under monotheism-amun ra. It was soon after that that the legend of moses left Egypt. Moses bringing that monotheism and turning it to Judaism. One thing for sure, I would be willing to bet that the lost libraries like Alexandria are locked away under the Vatican. You can't tell me that ALL the maya text was destroyed- I bet they have some good ones in those secret archives. Makes you wonder what Napoleon did when he snagged the archives. He then went to Egypt and the story goes when he was in the great pyramid he asked to be left alone in the kings chamber. He came out ashen in color and someone asked what happened he replied "you wouoldn't believe me if I told you". He then went on to rule like a crazy man- beheading and sacking cities, seemingly forgetiing his western school of war,

Moses did not bring monotheism, they believed in multiple gods at the time, hence the snake god and the commandment not to worship another god more (not claiming there are no other gods or denying that you should worship them)

jackchorn "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" - recognition of other gods "Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.’" - instruction to worship a snake god (one which was worshipped before this time, a god that Moses' wife would have worshipped) Essentially during the time of Moses, other gods were believed to exist but were not to be worshipped. This does not make it monotheistic. The one true god stuff is Christian.

I love the idea that all the religions in this area where in a non stop pissing match. I wonder if their is any evidence of this happening anywhere else, like northern Europe or Asia. as far as I can tell most people in northern Europe acknowledged the existence of other gods and possibly as competitors but as far as I can tell there wasn't any weanie wagging to the magnitude of those in the crescent. any clues anyone?
